MINI Countryman

2026-10-01 09:40:00

Model Overview

The MINI Countryman is a premium compact SUV from the MINI stable, standing as the brand’s largest and most practical offering. First introduced in 2010, the Countryman broke the mould as the first "Big MINI" to transcend conventional hatchback boundaries, creating the compact luxury SUV niche. In 2023, the third-generation Countryman (chassis code U25) made its global debut at the IAA Munich Motor Show. As of June 2026, the 2026 Countryman lineup features a comprehensive powertrain portfolio globally—petrol options comprise the entry-level Countryman C, all-wheel-drive Countryman S ALL4, and the flagship performance JCW Countryman ALL4, while the pure-electric range includes the Countryman E and Countryman SE ALL4. Models produced from March 2026 onwards feature several technical enhancements, including 48V mild-hybrid technology across all petrol variants and silicon carbide (SiC) inverters for EV variants to boost efficiency and range. In Australia, the 2026 model is priced from AUD 54,490 (approx. RM258,000).

Design Language

The third-generation Countryman departs from the soft, rounded styling of its predecessor in favour of a sharper, more muscular, and angular design language. Up front, it sports a newly sculpted octagonal grille for a bolder road presence, flanked by redesigned polygonal ring-shaped LED headlights with three selectable daytime running light signatures: Classic, Favoured, and JCW. Dimensions have grown considerably—measuring 4,447 mm long, 1,843 mm wide, and 1,645 mm tall, with a 2,692 mm wheelbase, marking gains of 150 mm in length, 21 mm in width, 14 mm in height, and 22 mm in wheelbase over the outgoing model. Despite its larger footprint, the signature short front and rear overhangs preserve MINI’s trademark agile proportions. Aerodynamics have also been improved to a drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd. The floating roofline and distinctive C-pillar design are rendered with bold colour-blocking, presenting a sleek and clean aesthetic.

Inside, the cockpit is headlined by an industry-first 240 mm circular OLED central display that seamlessly bundles navigation, infotainment, and vehicle settings. MINI’s iconic physical toggle switches remain present on the centre console, offering a delightfully tactile operating experience. The traditional instrument binnacle has been replaced by a Head-Up Display (HUD) projected into the driver's line of sight. Sustainable knitted fabric trims feature extensively throughout the cabin, while the JCW variant gains sporty red vertical woven stitching and matte gold accents for an upscale, athletic vibe.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 Countryman brings electrified updates across the entire range, with all petrol variants now equipped with 48V mild-hybrid technology.

Countryman C is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) driving the front wheels. It outputs 125 kW (170 PS) and 280 Nm of torque, completing the 0–100 km/h sprint in 8.3 seconds.

Countryman S ALL4 gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid setup, mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission and MINI’s ALL4 intelligent all-wheel-drive system. It develops 160 kW and 360 Nm of torque, dispatching 0–100 km/h in 7.1 seconds.

JCW Countryman ALL4 features a high-performance tuned 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant. Delivering 221 kW (300 PS) and 400 Nm of torque, it propels the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds on to a top speed of 250 km/h.

On the EV front, the Countryman E runs a single-motor front-wheel-drive setup, while the Countryman SE ALL4 employs a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, both fed by a 65.2 kWh battery pack. Thanks to the 2026 update with silicon carbide inverters, WLTP driving ranges have been bumped up to 501 km and 467 km, respectively. DC fast charging from 10% to 80% takes roughly 30 minutes.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the third-generation Countryman rides on the shared FAAR architecture alongside the BMW X1 and iX1, rolling off the production line at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig in Germany. The suspension setup consists of front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent arrangement. The damping characteristics strike a finer balance between sportiness and daily usability—moving away from the harsh, stiff ride of its predecessor, the new setup offers a more pliant, forgiving primary ride that elevates everyday comfort while retaining solid body control and high-speed stability. The performance JCW variant rides on a dedicated sports suspension that lowers ride height by 16 mm. The ALL4 intelligent AWD system dynamically shifts torque between axles based on road conditions, ensuring maximum traction and grip on slippery or wet surfaces.

Cabin and Equipment

The Countryman features a practical 2+3 five-seater arrangement. The rear cabin sees the most meaningful packaging gains—all three rear backrests can be individually reclined by up to 12 degrees, while the entire rear bench slides fore and aft by up to 13 cm, allowing owners to easily tailor legroom and boot capacity to their needs. With the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats folded down, boot volume expands from 450 litres to a cavernous 1,460 litres. Infotainment is handled by the standard 9.4-inch circular OLED touchscreen powered by MINI Operating System 9. Higher-grade variants can be specified with an optional premium Harman Kardon sound system.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the Countryman achieved a full five-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash testing. Camera- and radar-based driver assistance systems come standard across the range. The SUV features standard Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities, incorporating full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with forward collision warning), Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Assist, Active Side Collision Protection, and Emergency Stop Assist. The system can also detect pedestrians and cyclists crossing or moving parallel to the vehicle's path, automatically applying the brakes if necessary. When reversing, the system detects rear cross traffic and provides visual and audible warnings.

Market Performance and Outlook

The Countryman remains the bestselling individual model globally within the MINI portfolio. In 2025, global deliveries of the Countryman hit 93,305 units—a 15.2% year-on-year increase that accounted for 32.4% of total MINI brand sales, meaning roughly one in every three MINIs sold worldwide is a Countryman. Electric variants saw remarkable momentum, with sales surging by 81.8% year-on-year. The third-generation model is manufactured at BMW's Leipzig plant, marking the first time it is produced fully in-house by the BMW Group. In the premium compact crossover space, key rivals include the smart #1, Volvo EX30, and Zeekr X. From its 2010 inception to the thoroughly overhauled third-generation model in 2026, the MINI Countryman combines 'just-right' proportions, versatile practicality, and the brand’s quintessential go-kart driving thrills, carving out a distinct niche in the global premium compact SUV arena.
