Model Overview

The MINI Cooper BEV is an all-electric subcompact hatchback under the MINI brand, serving as the electrified evolution of the marque's iconic three-door hatch. Built on a dedicated pure electric platform developed by Spotlight Automotive—a joint venture between MINI and Great Wall Motor—the EV officially debuted in the Chinese market in February 2025. As of June 2026, the on-sale 2025 and 2026 electric MINI COOPER lineup is offered in two variants: the COOPER E Classic and COOPER SE Artist, carrying a retail price range of RM209,800 to RM239,800, with limited-time promotional pricing starting from as low as RM153,800. Positioned as a premium compact EV, its key rivals in the domestic market include the smart #1 and Volvo EX30.
Design Language
Visually, the electric MINI COOPER retains the brand's unmistakable design cues—signature round LED headlights, a "wheels-at-the-corners" stance, and the quintessential three-door hatchback silhouette. Up front, a blanked-off octagonal grille underscores its EV credentials while paying homage to the classic icon. Dimensionally, the hatch measures 3,858 mm long, 1,756 mm wide, and 1,458 mm tall, riding on a 2,526 mm wheelbase. A dual-tone paint scheme creates a floating roof appearance, complemented by flush door handles that aid aerodynamic efficiency. Round the back, smoked triangular vertical tail lamps house distinctive matrix LED graphics. Aerodynamic drag is rated at an impressive 0.28 Cd, with exterior colour options including British Green, Storm Grey, and Chili Red.
Inside, the cabin embraces a "minimalism first" design ethos. The centrepiece is a 240 mm circular OLED central touchscreen, completely replacing the conventional instrument binnacle. Powered by MINI Operating System 9, the infotainment system supports seven selectable MINI Experience Modes. Sustainable, recycled materials are used extensively throughout the cabin, punctuated by chequered-flag motifs and bucket seats finished with red contrast stitching in a 2+2 four-seater configuration. MINI has also teamed up with Paul Smith to roll out bespoke offerings, including the Designer Edition and Jammin' Blue Limited Edition.
Powertrain & Performance
The electric MINI COOPER range is driven by a front-mounted single electric motor powering the front wheels (FWD). The entry-level COOPER E Classic features a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 135 kW (184 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, while the higher-tier COOPER SE Artist pushes out 160 kW (218 PS) and 330 Nm. Both variants are juiced by a 51.5 kWh ternary lithium battery pack. In terms of outright performance, the COOPER E Classic accomplishes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 8.1 seconds, whereas the punchier COOPER SE Artist completes it in 6.7 to 7.1 seconds, on to a top speed of 160–170 km/h. On the CLTC cycle, the COOPER E Classic yields up to 466 km of range, while the COOPER SE Artist delivers 463 km. Via DC fast charging, a 10% to 80% state of charge can be achieved in just 30 minutes.
Chassis & Handling
Chassis dynamics remain the cornerstone of the electric MINI COOPER's driving appeal, staying faithful to the brand's trademark "go-kart" handling DNA. The suspension setup employs front MacPherson struts and an independent multi-link rear. Paired with wheels pushed out to the far edges of its 2,526 mm wheelbase, the hatch delivers remarkably nimble dynamics. Torsional rigidity stands at 35,700 Nm/deg, significantly bolstering structural stiffness. Steering duties are handled by a sharp and communicative electric power steering system. Braking is managed by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, complete with an electronic parking brake. The chassis is tuned with a distinct sporting edge—offering firm body control, transparent road feedback, and minimal roll in corners. Configured with a front-motor, front-wheel-drive layout, the hatch tips the scales at an unladen kerb weight of roughly 1,605 kg.
Cabin & Features
On the tech front, the 9.4-inch circular OLED central screen runs on the 9th generation MINI Operating System, boasting intelligent voice control, 5G connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Notably, the 2026 model upgrades connectivity from 4G to an onboard 5G network. In-car voice interaction is driven by "Spike", MINI's intelligent personal digital assistant.
Equipment-wise, the 2026 specification list has seen a few trade-offs across the board. The COOPER E Classic omits standard wireless smartphone charging, but gains optional full keyless entry, UWB digital key, and an NFC card key. Meanwhile, the COOPER SE Artist drops the head-up display (HUD) and AR navigation from its options list. Standard creature comforts include a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, active sound design, and remote start. Higher-spec variants add power-adjustable and heated front seats. Boot capacity is rated between 210 litres and 800 litres with the rear seats folded.
Safety & Driver Assistance
Safety remains a key selling point for the electric MINI COOPER. In the 2025 Euro NCAP crash safety evaluations, the MINI Cooper Electric was awarded the prestigious "Best in Class" accolade, scoring 89% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant, 79% for Safety Assist, and 77% for Vulnerable Road Users. Nine airbags (including a front-centre far-side airbag) come as standard equipment. On the active safety front, all variants receive full-speed Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB, operational up to 120 km/h), Lane Keeping Assist, and Lane Change Assist. The ADAS suite also encompasses Active Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitoring, allowing the body structure to satisfy both Chinese and European five-star safety standards.
Market Performance & Evaluation
The electric MINI COOPER paints a contrasting picture between global demand and its reception in China. Worldwide, the MINI brand delivered in excess of 100,000 BEVs in 2025. However, in China, full-year deliveries for 2025 stood at just 9,532 units, with September 2025 sales plunging to a low of 242 units. Moving into 2026, monthly figures have remained stagnant in the low triple digits. Industry watchers attribute this lacklustre performance to the spatial constraints of its three-door layout, an infotainment ecosystem that trails behind domestic tech-focused EV startups, and fierce price-to-spec competition from homegrown new energy vehicles. In this segment, its chief rivals include the smart #1 (offering up to 560 km range, starting from RM199,000) and the Volvo EX30. As an emotional purchase bought purely for passion, the electric MINI COOPER strikes a unique balance between urban daily usability and individualistic flair by staying true to its heritage while embracing electric mobility.
