Lithium-Based Grease

I. Product Definition

Lithium-based grease, commonly known in workshops as "yellow grease", is a multi-purpose lubricant formulated by thickening mineral or synthetic base oils with lithium fatty acid soaps (such as lithium 12-hydroxystearate) and fortified with functional additives like anti-oxidants and rust inhibitors. As the most versatile and widely produced grease type today, lithium-based grease accounts for approximately 81% of the total market share in China. Having evolved continuously since the 1940s, it is now extensively utilised across industrial machinery, automotive maintenance, and general equipment servicing.

II. Main Components

The formulation of lithium-based grease comprises three key constituents: base oil, thickener, and additives. The base oil typically utilises medium-viscosity mineral oil or synthetic lubricant; the thickener is lithium fatty acid soap, particularly lithium 12-hydroxystearate soap; whilst the additive package includes anti-oxidants, rust inhibitors, and extreme pressure (EP) anti-wear agents. Certain specialised grades are further blended with solid lubricants such as molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) to enhance heavy-load and extreme-pressure capabilities.

III. Working Principle

The lubricating mechanism of lithium-based grease is rooted in its microscopic structure: lithium soap molecules form twisted, double-stranded ribbon-like fibres within the base oil, intertwining to establish a stable structural matrix. This matrix traps and retains the base oil via capillary action, forming a cohesive colloidal dispersion system. Under mechanical load, the matrix withstands the pressure and releases base oil directly onto friction surfaces to create an effective lubricating film; once the load is relieved, the fibrous structure recovers and re-absorbs the base oil. This distinctive thixotropic behaviour delivers exceptional mechanical shear stability and colloidal stability.

IV. Main Classifications

Lithium-based grease is classified primarily by application and consistency grade:

By Application:

  • General-Purpose Type: Complies with GB/T 7324 standards, offering balanced water resistance and mechanical stability, with an operating temperature range of -20°C to 120°C.

  • Automotive Type: Meets GB/T 5671 standards, engineered for cold-start reliability down to -30°C.

  • Extreme Pressure (EP) Type: Fortified with EP anti-wear additives, designed for heavy-load, high-stress equipment.

  • Lithium Complex Grease: Delivers superior thermal resistance, capable of handling operating temperatures up to 160°C.

  • Molybdenum Disulphide (Moly) Lithium Grease: Blended with MoS2 for outstanding extreme-pressure performance under heavy shock loads.

By Consistency Grade (NLGI Grade):
Lithium grease is classified into NLGI grades 000#, 00#, 0#, 1#, 2#, and 3# based on worked cone penetration. Higher numbers denote a firmer consistency. Among these, NLGI 2# lithium grease is the industry standard and most widely used grade, striking an ideal balance between pumpability and surface adhesion.

V. Core Characteristics

The outstanding performance of lithium grease originates from its proprietary lithium soap fibrous structure, featuring:

  • Excellent Thermal Stability: Standard operating range spans -20°C to 120°C, with select formulations resisting intermittent peaks of 150°C, and extreme variants functioning from -60°C up to 160°C.

  • Superior Water Resistance: Low water solubility of lithium soap makes it highly effective in humid environments or components exposed to water wash-out.

  • High Mechanical Shear Stability: The intertwined double-strand ribbon fibre structure prevents excessive softening or thinning under intense mechanical shearing.

  • Extended Service Life: Requires roughly one-third less thickener than calcium-sodium greases whilst delivering more than double the working lifespan.

  • Corrosion & Rust Protection: Effectively shields metal surfaces against oxidation and moisture-induced corrosion.

VI. Automotive Applications

Lithium-based grease is indispensable across modern automotive maintenance, with primary applications including:

  • Wheel Hub Bearings: Automotive-grade lithium grease is the go-to standard for wheel bearing lubrication.

  • Chassis & Suspension Components: Suitable for steering linkage, suspension ball joints, and universal joints (U-joints).

  • Water Pumps & Alternators: Ideal for high-speed rotating friction points in alternators and water pump bearings.

  • Other Drivetrain & Body Components: Clutch release bearings, fifth-wheel turntable couplings on commercial hauliers, etc..

With continuous advances in lubricant technology, lithium-based grease has steadily superseded conventional calcium- and sodium-based greases, becoming the undisputed mainstream choice in automotive workshops.

VII. Application Guidelines & Precautions

Proper Application Guidelines:

  1. Clean the Lubrication Points: Thoroughly flush and clean away aged grease, sludge, and road grit before packing to avoid abrasive wear.

  2. Use the Right Tools: Apply or inject grease evenly using dedicated grease guns, spatulas, or centralised lubrication systems.

  3. Control Packing Volume: Fill bearings to approximately one-third to one-half of their internal cavity volume; avoid overpacking to prevent excessive heat buildup and grease blow-out during operation.

  4. Maintain Tool Cleanliness: Ensure grease guns, nozzles, and containers are free from dirt, dust, and particulate contamination.

Key Precautions:

  • Never Mix Different Greases: Do not blend greases of different brands or thickener bases, nor mix fresh grease with degraded old grease.

  • Do Not Heat Before Packing: Never melt grease over direct heat before application, as this permanently destroys the soap matrix.

  • Seal Airtight After Use: Smooth out the grease surface and seal the tub or drum tightly after use to prevent oil separation (bleeding) and contamination.

  • Routine Inspection: Inspect grease condition periodically (e.g. every 500 operating hours); flush and repack immediately if discolouration or hardening is detected.

  • Storage Guidelines: Store sealed containers in a clean, cool, dry, and well-ventilated space.

VIII. Comparison: Lithium-Based vs Calcium-Based Grease

Compared to traditional calcium-based grease (historically referred to as standard yellow cup grease), lithium-based grease offers significant performance advantages:

Comparison Item Lithium-Based Grease Calcium-Based Grease
Operating Temperature -30°C to 120°C Not exceeding 55°C – 60°C
Service Life Long (more than double the service life) Short
Water Resistance Excellent Good
Application Scope Broad, highly versatile across high-speed and heavy-load duties Limited, restricted to low-to-medium speed and light-load duties

Consequently, lithium-based grease has become the top-choice lubricant across modern automotive maintenance and industrial machinery.

IX. Summary

Boasting exceptional temperature resistance, water repellency, mechanical shear stability, and long service intervals, lithium-based grease stands as the most widely used all-round lubricant today. In automotive applications—ranging from wheel hub bearings and chassis ball joints to alternators and water pumps—lithium grease delivers irreplaceable protection and wear reduction. Selecting the correct NLGI grade and adhering to disciplined lubrication practices will significantly prolong the service life of automotive components and mechanical hardware, truly making it an essential "liquid component" in preventative vehicle maintenance.
