LEAHEAD

2026-05-29 18:50:01

LEAHEAD is a joint venture brand under GAC Toyota, officially launched on October 18, 2014, at the 10th anniversary celebration of GAC Toyota. Positioned in the new energy vehicle field, its first model was the all-electric small car LEAHEAD i1, mainly targeting the urban commute market. LEAHEAD served as an important carrier for GAC Toyota to promote localized R&D and layout its new energy strategy, carrying the exploration mission of joint venture enterprises in the field of independent innovation.

History

In October 2014, at the 10th anniversary celebration, GAC Toyota officially released its mid-term plan and announced the launch of the joint venture local brand “LEAHEAD.” The brand name was interpreted by then GAC Toyota General Manager Kazuhiro Kobayashi as “Lead Ambition, Lead Ambition, Do Not Forget Ambition.” In November of the same year, the LEAHEAD all-electric concept car made its debut at the Guangzhou International Motor Show. Its exterior design adopted a crossover style, and the mass-produced model was to be developed on this basis.

In April 2015, the LEAHEAD i1 concept car was first exhibited at the Shanghai Auto Show. In November of the same year, the mass-produced LEAHEAD i1 was officially launched at the Guangzhou Auto Show. It was planned to be assembled by the end of the year, with demonstration operations to be carried out in Guangzhou City in 2016. However, the mass-production delivery plan for the LEAHEAD i1 did not proceed as scheduled, and the brand did not launch any further new models subsequently. GAC Toyota’s promotional resources gradually shifted to the new energy product line of the Toyota brand itself.

Product Portfolio

Actually, the LEAHEAD brand only has one model — the **LEAHEAD i1**, which is in the demonstration operation stage and has not been officially launched for sale.

The LEAHEAD i1 is an all-electric small car modified based on Toyota’s previous-generation Yaris platform. Its body dimensions are 3,930 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,555 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm. The exterior design continues the concept car’s styling, with details adjusted for mass production, such as redesigned front and rear bumper colors and styles, and front and rear lamp groups returning to traditional shapes.

Regarding powertrain, the LEAHEAD i1 is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 70 kW (about 95 hp), matched with a lithium iron phosphate battery pack. It offers a range of 128 km (under NEDC conditions), a top speed of 130 km/h, and a 0–50 km/h acceleration time of 3.67 seconds.

Regarding the interior, the LEAHEAD i1 adopts a central instrument panel design similar to the previous-generation Yaris. The center console is equipped with a touch screen, and the seats feature a sporty bucket-style shape.

Market Performance

The LEAHEAD i1 never entered the mass production sales stage; only a small number were used for demonstration operation projects in Guangzhou City. GAC Toyota once planned to build an “Electric Satellite City” with Guangzhou Nansha and Zhujiang New Town as the central areas, but this plan failed to be implemented on a large scale. As of 2026, all mainstream automotive sales data platforms have no sales records for the LEAHEAD i1. The LEAHEAD brand also gradually became marginalized within GAC Toyota’s product system, with no facelifts or new models launched subsequently.

Technology and Innovation

The technical route of the LEAHEAD i1 reflects the typical characteristics of early joint venture local brands’ “oil-to-electric” conversion.

Platform and Chassis: It adopted the previous-generation Toyota Yaris (NCP91 series) platform for electrification transformation, replacing the original fuel vehicle’s powertrain with a pure electric drive system. While this technical path offered relatively low development costs and a short R&D cycle, the platform was not originally designed for a pure electric system, resulting in inherent limitations in battery layout, space utilization, and range performance.

Three-Electric System: The vehicle is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 70 kW. The energy storage device is a lithium iron phosphate battery produced by Beijing Prilead New Energy Battery Technology Co., Ltd. The vehicle’s technology stage is marked as “Development Period,” consistent with the product positioning of early new energy vehicles.

Safety Configuration: The ABS system is provided by Advics (Tianjin) Automotive Parts Co., Ltd., model 89541-52760.

Global Presence

The LEAHEAD brand has not carried out any commercial layout in overseas markets. Its market operations were completely limited to within China, with no overseas R&D centers, production bases, or dealer networks. In 2015, GAC Toyota planned a Guangzhou demonstration operation project for the LEAHEAD i1, which did not involve any overseas sales plans.

Future Strategy

As of 2026, the LEAHEAD brand is in a de facto dormant state. Since the launch of the LEAHEAD i1 in 2015, the brand has not introduced any new models for nearly ten years, and GAC Toyota has not announced any follow-up product plans or new energy development roadmaps for the LEAHEAD brand. As GAC Toyota shifts its strategic focus entirely to Toyota TNGA platform models and the bZ all-electric series, the LEAHEAD brand lacks substantial resource investment within the GAC Toyota system.

Given the industry-wide retreat of joint venture local brands and the long-standing lack of product updates for LEAHEAD, the possibility of this brand reviving and launching mass-produced new models is extremely low. From the perspective of actual business and brand operations, LEAHEAD has basically withdrawn from GAC Toyota’s core product matrix. This brand can be recorded as a phase-specific case study in the exploration process of joint venture local brands within China’s automotive industry.
