Kombat is a civilian heavy armored vehicle brand originating from Russia, jointly created by the renowned Latvian automotive company DARTZ and the Russian Combat Armoring Group. The brand is celebrated for producing "the safest SUV in the world," specializing in all-terrain luxury armored models. Kombat stands out as the world’s only factory-produced armored all-terrain SUV, rather than a post-market modification. Before its emergence, the American Hummer dominated the global market. However, Kombat has since secured a leading position in this niche sector, offering a comprehensive range of armor levels from B2 to NATO standards.
The brand’s logo features a distinctive circular battle shield with three frames of varying thicknesses. The outermost and innermost frames are gold, with a dragon pattern inlaid in the center, creating a powerful visual impact that aligns with the brand’s luxury armor positioning. Internationally recognized for its rugged, commanding appearance and extreme safety features, Kombat is known as the fastest civilian heavy armored vehicle on land.
Kombat's development is rooted in Russia's long tradition of armored manufacturing. Before the brand was mass-produced, the Russian RussoBalt factory had already produced what was then the world's most expensive presidential armored sedan in 1918, featuring 8mm armor and 70mm bulletproof glass. This vehicle, once used by Soviet leader Lenin, is regarded as the spiritual predecessor of Kombat's manufacturing lineage.
The automotive department of the modern KOMBAT brand was established in 1907 and began mass production just three years later, becoming the designated vehicle for Tsar Nicholas II's army in 1912. In 1985, Kombat was officially established as an independent modification factory, initially aiming to create a Soviet sports car. After numerous failed prototypes and concept cars, the company found a sustainable direction in 1993 by producing specialized armored vehicles, primarily fulfilling orders for military-grade bulletproof cash transport vehicles.
1995 marked a key moment for American capital entering the Russian automotive industry. General Motors identified the lack of armored protection in the Hummer as a critical flaw for battlefield use and subsequently partnered with Kombat to produce military armored vehicles. Following successful market validation, both parties transferred this technology to the civilian sector. In 1998, the KOMBAT T98 civilian armored vehicle was launched. By 2008, the Combat Armoring Group's production base was officially completed, signaling the brand's entry into an era of standardized production.
In January 2011, Zhongjin Auto Trade Tangshan Shengshi International Auto Park Development Co., Ltd. signed an exclusive general agency agreement with the Combat Armoring Group and Dartz Company. This marked KOMBAT's official entry into the Chinese market, where it adopted the Chinese brand name "Kombat" and established the Kombat (China) Sales Center. Later that year, in September, the brand made its domestic debut at the 14th Chengdu International Auto Show.
Since entering China, the Kombat brand has focused its product line on civilian all-terrain armored SUVs, primarily divided into the following core models.
Kombat Shield Series (KOMBAT T98): This is the brand’s absolute core product, available in two versions: the Combat Version and the Command Version. The Combat Version is positioned as a standard all-terrain luxury armored SUV, while the Command Version is a higher-end customized model featuring thicker armored materials and comprehensive presidential-level luxury interior kits. The Kombat Shield remains unparalleled in the global mass-produced armored vehicle market, often claiming to surpass the discontinued civilian Hummer. With an exaggerated length-to-width ratio and a minimum ground clearance of 300mm, it offers superior off-road performance compared to mainstream off-road vehicles.
Powertrain Options: The product line offers three powertrain configurations, all sourced from General Motors: 8.1L and 6.2L gasoline versions, and a 6.2L diesel version. All models come standard with an Allison 6-speed automatic/manual transmission. Early flagship models were equipped with 8.0-liter/8.1-liter V8 engines, producing approximately 456 horsepower with a top speed of 240 km/h. Later versions featured 6.0-liter V8 engines, delivering 304 horsepower and 488 N·m of torque.
Body Structure: Models sold in the Chinese market mainly come in two specifications: hatchback armored SUV and sedan armored SUV.
Each Shield vehicle undergoes a rigorous production process, requiring 1,500 hours of pure hand-assembly by 28 senior technicians. This extreme level of customization results in very limited market availability.
The Kombat Shield officially launched in the domestic market in 2011. In terms of pricing, the base model with B2 protection level started at 8.98 million RMB, while the Commander version started at 9.98 million RMB. For the highest armor level (NATO protection standard), the price increases by more than 7 million RMB on top of the base model, and orders for this tier are limited within China. During the brand's initial introduction, the top-tier armored Shield models were exclusively available for bespoke customizations and were not stocked in large quantities.
Kombat occupies a highly niche ultra-luxury armored SUV segment, with extremely low annual production volumes estimated to be in the single digits globally. Due to the brand’s focus on pure handcrafted customization and the fact that most vehicles are imported directly from Russia via exclusive orders, public global or regional sales data is scarce. Mainstream automotive sales platforms often display "no sales data available" for the brand. While some online sources, particularly self-media outlets, reported monthly sales figures for Kombat in May 2017, these claims lack verification from official channels and their credibility remains questionable. In reality, the brand primarily sustains its operations through exceptionally high unit prices rather than volume sales.
Kombat's core competitive advantage lies in its unique factory-original armored protection system.
Full-body Double-layer Composite Armor: The Shield's body utilizes a Steel-Ceramic-Steel composite structure, incorporating high-quality German military-grade armored steel plates. The external steel plate is 3mm thick, while the internal plate is 2mm thick. With double-layer stacking, the maximum NATO protection level can be customized to a total thickness of 6.5mm. The armor filling technology embeds ceramic materials between the metal layers, leveraging the high hardness of ceramics and the toughness of steel to create a "soft and hard" combination that significantly enhances penetration resistance.
Advanced Bulletproof Glass: The standard front side window glass has a thickness of 14.5mm (B2 Level). In the highest protection configuration of the top-tier model, the glass thickness can reach up to 76mm—comparable to that of heavy armored vehicles—providing sufficient protection against threats from Bren light machine guns and sniper rifles.
NATO Protection and Military Standard Chassis: Kombat has obtained NATO standard protection certification. Its highest-level armored structure can withstand 12.7mm heavy machine gun bullets and sustained fire from AK47s, an achievement rarely matched in global passenger armored vehicles. The chassis features a fully welded steel structure similar to those used in military armored vehicles, offering exceptional load-bearing capacity and military-standard protection against landmines and roadside bomb explosions. The tires are standard military run-flat models, capable of maintaining speeds of approximately 50 km/h even after being hit by gunfire.
Kombat adopts a globally distributed model based on original imports. Its main production base is located in Russia, where vehicles are jointly manufactured by the DARTZ Group and the Combat Armoring Group.
China serves as an extremely important overseas strategic market for Kombat. In 2011, Zhongjin Auto Trade Tangshan Shengshi International Auto Park Development Co., Ltd. officially introduced the brand to China by signing an exclusive general agency agreement with the Russian side. Subsequently, Kombat (Tianjin) International Trade Co., Ltd. was established to serve as the primary support hub for the brand's sales and after-sales services in the country. While the brand has attempted to export custom models to ultra-wealthy circles in the Middle East, Europe, and America through local Russian channels, specific export data remains highly classified. Consequently, Kombat's actual global volume relies heavily on orders from China.
Due to the brand’s commitment to maintaining an aura of mystery and its highly selective made-to-order production model, Kombat has not yet released any future plans involving "electrification" or "plug-in" technologies. Given that its body weight exceeds 3.5 tons and it relies heavily on the torque output of large-displacement V8 multi-cylinder fuel engines, how the brand will address the environmental and personalization demands of the next generation of high-net-worth individuals amid the global electrification wave remains uncertain.
However, Kombat currently holds an unshakable technical monopoly in the ultra-luxury armored SUV sector. In the future, the brand is likely to continue leveraging its mature German armored craftsmanship and bespoke hand-made customization services, maintaining extremely low annual production volumes to preserve high value within collector circles. There is currently no official information indicating that the brand will launch hybrid or fully electric Shield versions. The brand’s overseas strategic focus will remain centered on the Chinese market, supplemented by exports of customized high-end armored models to emerging economies such as Russia and the Middle East.
