Jeep Renegade

2026-10-09 14:40:01

The Jeep Renegade is an entry-level compact SUV (B-SUV) from Stellantis' Jeep brand, officially badged as "Zi You Xia" in the Chinese market. The model made its global debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, marking the Jeep brand's first global B-segment SUV built on the Fiat Small-Wide platform. The Chinese domestic-market version was introduced for local assembly and retail by GAC FCA Jeep in 2016. As of June 2026, the Renegade has been progressively phased out across multiple global markets.

Model Overview

Positioned as a B-segment SUV, the Renegade serves as the entry-level offering in the Jeep line-up. Its core selling point lies in blending Jeep's rugged off-road heritage with the dynamic handling genetics of European Fiat models, delivering a distinctive rugged appeal and all-terrain capability in the compact SUV segment. Vehicle dimensions measure 4,240–4,250 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,695 mm in height, with a 2,570 mm wheelbase. The official retail price for the locally assembled Chinese version ranged from RM129,800 to RM202,800, with special editions on offer such as the 75th Anniversary Edition. As of June 2026, the model has effectively ceased sales in the Mainland Chinese market.

Design Language

The Renegade's exterior styling adopts the Jeep family's signature boxy "BOXFORM" design language. The front fascia retains the brand's iconic seven-slot grille, complemented by circular headlamps and an inset bonnet. Characterised by squarish, chiselled body lines, its square tail lamp design takes direct inspiration from the Wrangler. It achieves a drag coefficient of 0.35 Cd. In the North American market, the My Sky removable open-air roof system was available as an option.

Inside, the cabin previously earned a spot on the prestigious "Ward's 10 Best Interiors" list. It was offered in various cabin themes, including Dark Knight Cool Black and Fun Sand Beige/Black dual-tone. Accents on the air-conditioning vents and speaker surrounds feature contrasting trim highlights. The 2027 facelift model elevates the cabin further with an elevated 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster.

Powertrain and Performance

The Renegade is offered with a versatile range of powertrain options:

  • 1.4T turbocharged petrol engine: Delivers a maximum power of 110 kW and 230 Nm of peak torque.

  • 2.0L naturally-aspirated petrol engine: Delivers a maximum power of 109 kW and 190 Nm of peak torque.

  • 1.3T turbocharged petrol engine (overseas and facelift models): Generates a maximum power of 176–177 hp.

  • Plug-in Hybrid (4xe) : Combines a 1.3T engine with an electric motor to produce a total system output of 176 kW, offering a pure electric range of 50 km.

  • 48V Mild Hybrid (e-Hybrid) : Pairs a 1.3T engine with a 48V mild-hybrid setup.

Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT), 6-speed automatic, and a 9-speed automatic transmission. Drivetrain layouts are available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) configurations.

Chassis and Handling

The Renegade is engineered on the Fiat Small-Wide platform, underpinned by an all-round independent suspension setup. The 4WD variants are equipped with the Active Drive Low 4WD system alongside the Selec-Terrain traction management system, offering five selectable terrain modes: Sand, Mud, Snow, Rock, and Auto. The 4WD models also feature a low-range crawler gear and a rear differential lock. The 2027 facelift model further benefits from optimised approach and departure angles for enhanced off-road capabilities.

Cabin and Features

The cabin comes fitted with the Uconnect infotainment system. Earlier models featured a 7-inch LCD instrument display paired with either a 6.5-inch or 8.4-inch central touchscreen. The 2027 facelift range comes standard with a 10.1-inch Uconnect central infotainment touchscreen and a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster across the board. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. In terms of creature comforts, updates include rear air vents, a wireless smartphone charging pad with cooling, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a reverse camera. Higher-spec variants further incorporate connected services and Amazon Alexa integration.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, the Renegade is equipped with multistage front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags for both rows, and a driver's knee airbag. Built with 70% high-strength steel, the vehicle achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Active safety is supported by over 60 safety and security features, including Forward Collision Warning-Plus with active braking and LaneSense Lane Departure Warning, among others. It is also packed with more than 10 electronic safety systems, such as an electronic differential lock and dynamic steering torque assistance.

Market Performance and Reception

The Renegade has delivered solid sales milestones globally. Jeep has delivered over 2 million units worldwide to date, with Europe alone accounting for more than 500,000 units. Assembled at the Melfi plant in Italy, it was regarded almost as a "domestic model" by local consumers. In 2016, sales in the US market reached 106,606 units, with global annual deliveries once peaking at 200,000 units. However, sales momentum began to taper off from 2019, dipping to 85,000 units in 2023, while the US market registered just 8,440 units in 2024.

The Renegade officially bowed out of the US market at the end of 2023, with European production slated to conclude by late 2025. Moving forward, the market gap will be filled by the more compact Jeep Avenger and the larger, all-new Compass. In markets like Brazil, the 2027 facelift model remains on sale, prolonging its lifecycle via the addition of a 48V mild-hybrid powertrain and revamped interior appointments. As a unique offering that infused Jeep's hardcore off-road heritage into a compact B-segment crossover, the Renegade has left an unmistakable mark on the global SUV landscape over its 11-year run with its bold character and all-weather capability.
