Jeep Compass

2026-10-02 18:00:01

The Jeep Compass is a compact SUV (upgraded to a mid-size SUV in its new generation) under Stellantis’ Jeep brand, officially badged as the "Zhinanzhe" in the Chinese market. The first-generation model debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show and was introduced to China in 2007. The current model on sale is the third-generation major redesign unveiled in May 2025, underpinned by Stellantis' STLA Medium platform. As of June 2026, customer deliveries of the all-new third-generation Compass have commenced in overseas markets.

Model Overview

Positioned between the Renegade and Cherokee, the Compass serves as a core urban-oriented SUV for the Jeep brand. Its key selling proposition combines Jeep's signature off-road DNA with urban SUV comfort and onboard technology. Built on the STLA Medium platform, the third-generation model shares its modular architecture with vehicles such as the Peugeot 3008 and Citroën C5 Aircross. Dimensions have expanded significantly to 4,552 mm (L) × 1,819 mm (W) × 1,641 mm (H), with a wheelbase of 2,795 mm. In the Chinese market, the previous locally assembled Compass was priced between RM139,800 and RM241,800. The all-new third-generation model has yet to be officially introduced in the Chinese mainland market.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the third-generation Compass retains classic Jeep heritage while adopting a boxier, more angular silhouette. Up front, the brand's iconic seven-slot grille is retained, rendered as a closed-off gloss black panel accented by LED light strips and vertical detailing. Flanking the grille are slim, quadrilateral LED headlamps enclosed by bracket-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) with smoked housings. The front bumper features rugged black cladding that integrates active air intake shutters and standalone fog lamp units. The side profile adopts cleaner, straighter lines, complemented by tapering C-pillars, forward-raked D-pillars, flared black wheel arches, and a dual-tone finish that accentuates its rugged yet modern aesthetic. At the rear, a full-width LED taillight bar features an illuminated central "Jeep" badge, accompanied by distinctive "X"-patterned lighting signatures. The aerodynamic drag coefficient has been reduced to an impressive 0.29 Cd.

Inside, the cabin strikes a balance between daily practicality and modern high-tech design. It is fitted with a 16-inch floating horizontal central touchscreen display and a 10-inch integrated digital instrument cluster, with physical buttons and rotary dials thoughtfully retained beneath the centre screen for tactile ease of use. The interior is upholstered in dual-tone leather complemented by X-pattern contrast stitching.

Powertrain and Performance

The third-generation Compass offers three powertrain configurations:

  • 48V Mild Hybrid (e-Hybrid) : Powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, delivering a maximum output of 145 hp, mated to a 6-speed e-DCT dual-clutch transmission.

  • Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) : Features a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with an electric drive motor, generating a combined maximum output of 195 hp.

  • Battery Electric (BEV) : Available in single-motor FWD (213 hp) and dual-motor AWD (375 hp) configurations. The AWD variant delivers a WLTP-rated range of up to 650 km, while the FWD variant offers 500 km. Equipped with a 74 kWh battery pack, it supports 160 kW DC fast charging, replenishing from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

In terms of fuel economy, the mild-hybrid version delivers significantly optimized overall consumption.

Chassis and Handling

The third-generation Compass is engineered on Stellantis' STLA Medium platform. The suspension setup has been retuned to handle diverse road conditions with poise. Drivetrain configurations include front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The 4WD variants are equipped with the Jeep Active Drive intelligent 4WD system, which automatically disconnects the rear axle in Auto mode to optimise fuel efficiency. It comes standard with the Selec-Terrain traction management system, offering four drive modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud. The dedicated Trailhawk variant exclusively gains a Rock mode. The 4WD version boasts a ground clearance of 200 mm, an approach angle of 20°, a breakover angle of 15°, a departure angle of 26°, and a maximum water wading depth of 470 mm.

Cabin and Equipment

The cabin is anchored by a 16-inch central touchscreen infotainment unit alongside a 10-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. For comfort and convenience, range-topping variants come equipped with ventilated and massaging front seats, dual-tone leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display (HUD), and matrix LED headlamps. Boot capacity is rated at 550 litres in standard configuration, complemented by 34 litres of cabin storage compartments.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

The third-generation Compass sets a high benchmark in its segment with class-leading safety specifications. The vehicle comes standard with a full suite of Level 2 ADAS driver assistance systems, featuring: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Active Lane Management, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Driver Attention Alert. Higher-spec variants add a 360-degree surround-view camera system and semi-autonomous lane change assist.

Market Performance and Overview

The Compass remains a pivotal global model in the Jeep lineup. The first-generation model debuted in 2006 and entered the Chinese market as a fully imported unit in 2007. In 2016, the second-generation model went into local assembly under GAC FCA. Following a mid-life facelift in late 2020, its cabin and technology suite received comprehensive upgrades. In May 2025, the third-generation model made its global premiere in Italy.

In global markets, the all-new Compass has commenced rollouts and deliveries across Europe, North America, Morocco, and other regions. In Taiwan, the general distributor is slated to introduce the model in 2026. In Japan, the mild-hybrid variant is scheduled for introduction in the second half of 2026. For mainland China, the all-new Compass is expected to arrive as a CBU import. With its overhauled platform architecture, versatile electrified powertrain choices, and significantly enhanced tech suite, the third-generation Compass firmly redefines its position in the fiercely contested mid-size SUV segment.
