Jaguar I-PACE

2026-10-08 04:10:00

The Jaguar I-PACE is the marque's first all-electric SUV, originally unveiled in March 2018, with the production model making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show before going on sale later that year. Built on Jaguar Land Rover's bespoke eDM (electric Drive Module) modular architecture, it was the group's first mass-produced all-electric vehicle, marking the storied British luxury brand's official entry into the electric era. Positioned as a mid-size premium all-electric SUV, the Jaguar I-PACE was previously sold in the domestic market as a fully imported (CBU) model, with UK pricing starting from £63,495. Upon its launch, the model went head-to-head against luxury electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model X. Amid Jaguar's broader strategic pivot towards full brand electrification, the I-PACE was officially phased out of production in 2024, and domestic sales have now ceased.

Design Language

The Jaguar I-PACE breaks away from traditional SUV proportions with its exterior styling, featuring a sleek, sports car-like roofline sweeping back from raked A-pillars, successfully blending muscular SUV wheel arches with flowing coupe-like contours. Up front, it sports the signature family grille equipped with active air shutters; the 2024 facelift updated this with a cleaner, flush "shield" closed-off front grille. The headlight assemblies feature matrix LED tech with Jaguar's signature double "J-blade" daytime running lights (DRLs). Flush-fitting deployable door handles cut aerodynamic drag while accentuating its high-tech appeal. The rear end is instantly recognisable, where a steeply raked rear windscreen and an integrated diffusercreate a strong athletic stance; the distinctively shaped taillight clusters offer striking illumination at night. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,682 mm in length, 2,139 mm in width, and 1,565 mm in height, riding on an expansive 2,990 mm wheelbase. Inside, the I-PACE features a balanced, symmetrical cockpit layout, anchored by a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument clusterand a dual-screen Touch Pro Duo infotainment setup comprising 10-inch and 5.5-inch touch displays. High-grade materials such as supple leather, aluminium trim, and carbon fibre are used extensively, creating an interior ambience that seamlessly balances bespoke luxury with modern digital sophistication.

Powertrain & Performance

The Jaguar I-PACE features two in-house developed permanent magnet synchronous motors mounted coaxially on both the front and rear axles, creating an electric all-wheel drive (AWD) layout. The powertrain produces a combined maximum output of 294 kW (400 PS)and a potent 696 Nm of peak torque. The official 0-100 km/h century sprint takes a brisk 4.8 seconds, with top speed electronically capped at 200 km/h. Battery-wise, it is fitted with an energy capacity of 81 kWhor 90 kWhvia a high-density lithium-ion battery pack. In terms of range, it delivers up to 483 km under the NEDC cycle; roughly 470 km under the WLTP test standard; and 456 km according to MIIT figures. For charging, an 11 kW AC home wallbox takes approximately 8.6 hours to replenish the battery from 0 to 100%; alternatively, a 50 kW DC fast charger can add up to 270 km of range per hour.

Chassis & Handling

The Jaguar I-PACE is built on Jaguar Land Rover's dedicated eDM electric modular platform. The battery pack is integrated flat into the floorpan between both axles, achieving a balanced 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. Combined with a lightweight, torsionally rigid aluminium-intensive body architecture, as well as a suspension layout featuring front double wishbones and an Integral Link multi-link rear setup, the I-PACE delivers a robust dynamic foundation. The chassis responds crisply, offering excellent body control and poised cornering dynamics. Higher-spec variants feature active electronic air suspension, which automatically lowers ride height at speeds over 105 km/h to improve high-speed stability and aerodynamic efficiency, or can be raised at the push of a button to clear uneven terrain. Selectable driving modes include Rain/Ice/Snow, Eco, Comfort, and Dynamic settings. The AWD system also rapidly modulates torque delivery on slippery or loose surfaces.

Cabin & Equipment

The I-PACE's cabin layout is distinctly driver-focused. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster displays essential vehicle data including speed, battery level, and active drive modes. The centre stack adopts a dual-screen design: the primary 10-inch upper touchscreen handles satellite navigation, media, and vehicle settings; while the secondary 5.5-inch lower display controls dual-zone climate functions, seat heating, and ventilation. Infotainment duties were originally managed by the InControl Touch Pro Duo system; the 2024 facelift upgraded this to the responsive Pivi Pro system, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Cabin amenities include a head-up display (HUD), wireless smartphone charging pad, and a full panoramic glass roof. Ergonomically, the front seats offer plush contouring with electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation; the rear bench is similarly supportive and comfortable, complemented across the range by a fixed panoramic glass roof. Storage is practical, with a substantial standard boot capacity that expands to over 1,463 litres with the rear seats folded down; a handy 27-litre front luggage compartment ('frunk') is also tucked under the bonnet.

Safety & Driver Assistance

The I-PACE is thoroughly equipped in terms of both active and passive safety. On the active safety front, higher-tier models come with a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keep Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring. On the passive safety side, the aluminium architecture offers exceptional impact absorption. However, the I-PACE has been subject to multiple recalls: in July 2023, 995 imported units manufactured between 2019 and 2020 were recalled over potential traction battery fire risks; in May 2024, an additional 113 units from the 2018 build run were also recalled. The issue stemmed from manufacturing defects within certain battery cells that could lead to internal short circuits, causing thermal runaway and, in extreme cases, vehicle fires. Jaguar Land Rover provided free high-voltage battery replacements or vehicle buyback options for affected owners. In the United States, 6,396 units were previously recalled in 2023 due to similar battery thermal risks following eight reported fire incidents.

Market Performance & Reception

As an early pioneer from an established luxury marque venturing into the pure electric vehicle market, the Jaguar I-PACE attracted immense media attention upon its debut. At the 2018 Beijing Auto Show, its domestic introductory price was announced from RM688,000, with subsequent retail pricing officially pegged between RM630,800 and RM716,800, before major market adjustments eventually brought it into the RM300,000 bracket. However, high initial pricing combined with lukewarm brand equity in the premium EV space kept it from making significant commercial inroads in China. Furthermore, the I-PACE's cabin packagingand smart in-car technology struggled to stand out convincingly against fast-moving, technology-focused EV upstarts. With Jaguar executing a comprehensive brand repositioning towards an ultra-luxury electric future, the I-PACE ceased production in 2024, remaining the first and only pure electric SUV in the marque's storied history. In 2025, Jaguar paused new vehicle retail sales in the UK market to focus on preparing for its next-generation EV portfolio arriving in 2026. As a true trail-blazer for legacy luxury brands in the electric space, the I-PACE—with its cab-forward styling and authentic Jaguar dynamic DNA—served as a crucial bridge in the marque's transition from combustion engines to an all-electric future.
