Intersection Collision Warning (ICW) is an active safety feature that leverages V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication technology to gather real-time dynamic data on cross-traffic vehicles, alerting the driver when approaching an intersection if there is a risk of collision. This technology primarily helps drivers spot fast-moving cross traffic in time, especially when visibility is hindered by A-/B-pillar blind spots or during unprotected turns.
ICW relies on the "beyond-line-of-sight" sensing capabilities of the V2X communication network, operating through a seamless closed-loop process of "Perception - Decision - Warning".
Perception Stage: The host vehicle and approaching cross traffic exchange critical real-time safety data—including position, speed, and heading angle—via Dedicated Short-Range Communications (V2V). It can also tap into communication-enabled Roadside Units (V2I) to capture live intersection traffic data.
Decision-Making Stage: The system calculates the Time to Entry (TTE) and Distance to Entry (DTE) for every potential threat vehicle to identify any collision risk with the host vehicle. If multiple threats are detected, it prioritises the most critical hazard.
Warning Stage: The system prompts the driver to brake via instrument cluster visual alerts, audible warning chimes, or steering wheel haptic vibrations.
This feature is mainly designed for urban and suburban streets, main road junctions, roundabout entries, and highway on-ramps.
ICW covers several typical junction scenarios:
Moving Off at an Intersection: When moving off from a standstill at a junction where approaching cross traffic from the left or right might be obscured by other vehicles, the system issues an alert as the vehicle begins to roll forward.
Simultaneous Intersection Approach: When both the host vehicle and cross traffic approach an intersection concurrently, the system computes the time-to-collision and triggers a warning if required.
Unprotected Turns: During unprotected right or left turns where cross traffic cannot be seen in time due to visual obstructions, the system provides an advance warning.
Under the China Society of Automotive Engineers standards (T/CSAE 53-2017), the baseline technical requirements for ICW systems include: an operational vehicle speed range of 0–70 km/h, a communication range of ≥ 150 metres, system latency of ≤ 100 milliseconds, and positioning accuracy of ≤ 5 metres.
The ICW feature is transitioning from technical standards into commercial mass production. BMW has pioneered the mass-market rollout of ICW by equipping its 5 Series with V2X modules from 2025, enabling it to detect cross-traffic collision risks from up to 1 kilometre away. While earlier ICW iterations depended solely on V2V communication, BMW's ecosystem integrates vehicle-to-cloud and road infrastructure connectivity, vastly improving detection range and overall reliability.
Key Takeaway: ICW functions purely as a driver assistance warning system. Once alerted, the driver must take immediate corrective action (such as stepping on the brake pedal) to avoid an accident, as the system does not feature autonomous emergency braking. It does not replace the driver's judgment or responsibility for road safety at intersections.
