Intelligent Speed Limit Control (ISLC) is an advanced driver assistance feature that integrates Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). It automatically detects roadside speed limit signs and actively prompts or assists the driver in adjusting the cruising speed to match the legal speed limit of the current road, effectively preventing speeding offences caused by oversight or obstructed vision.
The core operational mechanism of ISLC is a closed-loop process of "detection, prompt, and synchronisation". First, the vehicle scans and recognises roadside speed limit signs in real time using the windscreen-mounted camera and radar system. When the system detects a new speed limit sign that differs from the current ACC cruising speed setting, an alert appears on the instrument cluster, prompting the driver to confirm if they wish to synchronise the cruising speed with the new limit.
The driver can confirm the update via the steering wheel controls. Once confirmed, the system automatically adjusts the ACC target cruising speed to match the legal limit of that road section to prevent speeding. This feature typically operates within a speed range of 30–150 km/h and requires ACC to be actively engaged.
The ISLC system primarily addresses two major pain points in everyday driving. Firstly, while cruising, drivers may miss sudden speed limit signs due to momentary distraction or blocked views, resulting in the set speed exceeding the actual speed limit. Secondly, when the legal speed limit drops abruptly (such as entering a highway slip road or ramp), ISLC helps the vehicle adjust to the new speed smoothly and promptly, reducing the risk of speeding summonses and traffic mishaps.
It is important to note that ISLC relies entirely on TSR's accurate detection of speed limit signs, meaning its performance is subject to environmental conditions. In adverse weather and low-visibility scenarios such as night driving, heavy rain, thick fog, or harsh backlighting, the system's recognition capability drops significantly and may fail to operate properly. Additionally, it cannot recognise obscured, damaged, or non-standard temporary speed limit signs.
ISLC is purely a driver assistance system designed for convenience and safety reminders; it does not replace the driver's independent judgment. The driver remains solely responsible for vehicle safety at all times and must control the vehicle's speed according to actual road conditions and traffic regulations.
