Individual Mode

2026-10-13 23:40:00

Individual Mode (also known as Custom Drive Mode) is a key feature in the drive mode selection systems of modern vehicles—particularly premium models and new energy vehicles (NEVs)—allowing drivers to tailor settings according to their personal driving habits and preferences. Unlike preset standard modes such as "Eco", "Comfort", and "Sport", Individual Mode moves away from a "one-size-fits-all" calibration approach. It allows drivers to freely mix and match control parameters across different vehicle systems, striking the ideal personal balance between everyday commuting comfort and spirited driving engagement.

Core Technical Architecture and System Synergy

The technical architecture of Individual Mode relies on domain controllers within the vehicle’s electronic and electrical (E/E) architecture (such as the Vehicle Control Unit/VCU, Electronic Stability Programme/ESP, and chassis domain controller), using the software bus to decouple and independently control multiple subsystems:

Independent Decoupling and Free Combination of Multi-Dimensional Subsystem Parameters:

Via the vehicle's infotainment touchscreen or drive mode menu, Individual Mode typically offers a comprehensive parameter adjustment matrix. Drivers can independently configure powertrain response (throttle sensitivity / engine power delivery), steering weight (steering feel and damping assistance), suspension damping stiffness (CDC adaptive dampers / air suspension ride height), and regenerative braking intensity. For instance, you can set the powertrain to "Sport" for instant throttle response while keeping the suspension and steering in "Comfort" to soak up road imperfections and maintain effortless low-speed manoeuvring.

Real-Time Command Dispatch and Memory Storage of Multi-Domain Dynamic Controllers:

Once the driver saves their custom setup, the vehicle domain controller stores it as a bespoke chassis and powertrain calibration profile. When the driver toggles into "Individual Mode", the respective subsystem controllers (EPS, ESP, MCU, suspension ECU) simultaneously receive the corresponding instructions. Within milliseconds, they adjust the throttle mapping, electric power steering assist current, and damper solenoid valves, delivering an instantaneous transformation in the car's dynamic character.

Safety Guidelines and Physical Limitations

Strictly Prohibiting Aggressive Powertrain Settings While Keeping Steering or Suspension Support at Their Softest in Low-Grip Conditions (such as Rain, Ice, or Tight Bends) or When Unfamiliar with Vehicle Limits (Prohibiting Blindly Setting Aggressive Powertrain While Keeping Suspension Soft in Low-Grip Conditions):

Mixing and matching settings across systems bypasses the standardised dynamic balance thoroughly validated by the manufacturer. Drivers should never attempt extreme combinations that defy basic physics. On wet or slippery roads, pairing an ultra-sensitive throttle with overly soft chassis or suspension support can easily cause instantaneous torque overload and a loss of tyre grip, leading to wheelspin, fishtailing, or a total loss of vehicle control.

Strictly Prohibiting Forcing Stiffer Damping or Engaging in Hard Driving via Individual Mode When Chassis/Suspension Hardware (e.g., Dampers, Control Arms) or Steering Components Have Existing Faults or Mechanical Damage (Prohibiting Forcing Hard Settings in Custom Modes When Chassis Hardware Is Damaged):

Individual Mode is fundamentally a digital calibration layer designed for mechanically sound hardware. Pushing a vehicle with compromised components is strictly prohibited. When chassis sensors or adaptive suspension actuators suffer physical faults, sending high-stress control commands via Individual Mode will not deliver the intended handling; instead, it risks accelerating mechanical damage and could potentially lead to suspension failure or a loss of steering control.
