In-Car Bluetooth

2026-10-17 11:10:00

In-car Bluetooth (Car Bluetooth) is an in-vehicle hands-free system powered by Bluetooth wireless communication technology. Its core function is to enable drivers to make hands-free calls via a wireless connection with their mobile phones while driving, thereby keeping hands on the wheel and reducing the risk of road accidents caused by mobile phone handling.

Core Functions and Value

The primary value of in-car Bluetooth lies in enhancing driving safety and convenience. It automatically recognises paired mobile phones and establishes a connection without the need for cables or phone mounts. Drivers can answer or make calls using steering wheel-mounted buttons or voice commands, with call audio routed through the vehicle's sound system. When an incoming call is received, the system automatically mutes the music or navigation audio and resumes playback once the call ends, ensuring the driver's hands never have to leave the steering wheel throughout the process. In addition to calls, most modern in-car Bluetooth systems support Bluetooth music streaming, allowing wireless audio playback from mobile phones to the car stereo.

Working Principle and Technical Foundation

The operating principle of in-car Bluetooth is identical to that of mobile phone Bluetooth, both complying with the global wireless communication standards established by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG).

  • Hardware Architecture: An in-car Bluetooth module typically integrates an RF unit, a baseband controller, and a microprocessor. Once the system powers on, it transmits signals across designated frequency bands, searching and waiting to establish a connection with devices such as mobile phones.

  • Connection and Protocols: Initial setup requires pairing, where the same pairing code (PIN code) is entered on both ends to complete device binding. During daily use, the system relies on specific Bluetooth protocol stacks (such as the HFP profile for voice calls and the A2DP profile for audio streaming) to ensure seamless interoperability between different devices.

Technological Evolution and Trends

In-car Bluetooth technology evolves in tandem with broader Bluetooth standards. Current mainstream automotive modules mostly adopt Bluetooth 5.1 or 5.2, delivering lower power consumption, extended transmission range, and more stable connectivity. In terms of industry standards, the China Audio Industry Association has issued group standards such as the "Specification for Bluetooth Transmission Adaptation of Low-Latency Low-Complexity High-Definition Audio Codec", driving the standardisation and high-definition quality of in-car Bluetooth audio.

As a functional evolution, the Bluetooth 6.0 Core Specification was released in 2024. Its introduced "Channel Sounding" technology enhances distance-measuring accuracy down to the centimetre level, which is of vital significance for high-precision positioning applications such as automotive digital keys.
