Model Overview

The Honda Step WGN is a mid-size MPV under Honda Motor, with a model lineage dating back to 1996. Offering generous cabin space, highly versatile seating configurations, and exceptional practicality as its core selling points, it is primarily targeted at multi-generational family buyers. The model serves as a core pillar in Honda's Japanese domestic market line-up, competing head-to-head with the Nissan Serena and Toyota Noah/Voxy. Currently on sale is the sixth-generation model launched in May 2022, offered in two distinct styling trims: the Air, featuring a minimalist home-inspired aesthetic, and the Spada, which adopts a sportier, more expressive character. The MPV is sold predominantly in right-hand-drive (RHD) markets including Japan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. While it has not been officially imported into Mainland China, its presence in Southeast Asian markets continues to expand.
Design Language
The sixth-generation Step WGN retains its signature boxy silhouette while adopting Honda's latest family design language. Up front, it features a semi-enclosed perforated grille seamlessly integrated with LED headlights on either side, exuding a cleaner and more sophisticated aesthetic. The side profile is defined by clean horizontal character lines, while split A-pillars combined with expansive side glass afford excellent forward and lateral visibility. A low-floor architecture facilitates effortless passenger ingress and egress. Around the back, an upright tailgate is flanked by vertical taillights stretching from the roofline to the bumper, delivering high visual recognisability at night. In terms of exterior dimensions, the MPV measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width, and 1,845 mm in height (1,855 mm for AWD variants), with a 2,890 mm wheelbase.
Inside, the sixth-generation model embraces a clean, functional dashboard layout. The centre stack is anchored by an 11.4-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display and a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster. A comprehensive array of physical buttons and switches is retained on the centre console for intuitive blind operation on the move. In 2025, Honda rolled out the Air EX trim—an upgraded specification based on the Air variant—adding premium appointments such as second-row ottoman leg rests and a powered tailgate, alongside a 30th Anniversary special edition.
Powertrain & Performance
The sixth-generation Step WGN is offered with two powertrain choices:
e:HEV Hybrid: Powered by a dual-motor hybrid system pairing a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle inline-four petrol engine with electric drive motors. The engine delivers a maximum output of 107 kW (approx. 145 PS) and 175 Nm of torque, while the electric propulsion motor generates 135 kW (approx. 184 PS) and 315 Nm of peak torque. Mated to an e-CVT gearbox, it is available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. It achieves a WLTC combined fuel consumption of around 20.3 km/L (approx. 4.9 L/100 km). The e:HEV system seamlessly alternates between EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive modes.
Petrol: Powered by a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo inline-four engine delivering 110 kW (approx. 150 PS) and 203 Nm of peak torque, paired with a CVT gearbox in either FWD or AWD guise.
Chassis & Handling
Built on Honda's transverse front-wheel-drive platform, the Step WGN rides on front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent setup, tuned for pliant ride comfort and urban driving stability. A tight turning radius of 5.4 metres makes it exceptionally agile through narrow urban streets across Japan and Southeast Asia. AWD variants provide enhanced traction on wet and slippery road surfaces. On the fuel economy front, the low-floor chassis and lightweight body structure help the hybrid variant deliver outstanding real-world efficiency.
Cabin & Features
The Step WGN is available in 7-seater (2+2+3) and 8-seater (2+3+3) cabin configurations. The 7-seater variant features second-row captain chairs fitted with dual armrests and integrated ottoman leg rests, offering extensive recline angles for superior passenger comfort. The third-row seats fold completely flat into the underfloor compartment, creating a flush boot floor that substantially expands cargo capacity. Up to 6 USB charging ports are strategically positioned across all rows to meet the charging demands of every occupant.
In terms of convenience amenities, higher-spec variants come equipped with tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, dual powered sliding doors, a powered tailgate (with memory height adjustment), and seat heaters. The infotainment unit supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. The iconic "Waku Waku Gate" (dual-action tailgate) pioneered on the fifth generation is carried over—allowing the rear door to either lift open fully or swing open sideways like a sub-door for convenient loading in confined parking spaces.
Safety & Driver Assistance
All Step WGN variants come standard with the Honda SENSING suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), offering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Key features include the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Higher trims further benefit from a 360-degree multi-view camera system, reverse parking assist, and Blind Spot Information (BSI). Passive safety equipment includes front, side, and curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and Hill Start Assist (HSA).
Market Performance & Reception
The Step WGN remains an indispensable model for Honda in Japan, commanding a major slice of the domestic mid-size MPV market alongside the Nissan Serena and Toyota Noah/Voxy. Since its launch, the sixth-generation model has been well received by family buyers. In 2025, Honda introduced a 30th Anniversary edition based on the Air EX trim to mark three decades of the Step WGN nameplate (May 1996 – May 2026), complete with bespoke badging and commemorative emblems, priced between approximately JPY 4,090,000 and JPY 4,150,000 (approx. NTD 900,000). In July 2025, the Step WGN officially entered the Indonesian market, priced at around IDR 629,000,000 (approx. NTD 1,130,000). It is also retailed in Hong Kong. In Mainland China, the vehicle has not been officially introduced due to its right-hand-drive architecture and product positioning. Across media reviews, the Step WGN has earned high praise for its space packaging, flexible seat versatility, and frugal hybrid efficiency, earning it the reputation of a true "space magician".
