Honda Racing Corporation (HRC)

Definition and Historical Status
Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) is the dedicated motorsport arm of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Established on 1 September 1982 and headquartered in Asaka, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, the company was founded with a capital of 320 million yen. HRC originally focused on motorcycle racing as its core operation. In 2022, Honda consolidated its four-wheel motorsport division into HRC, transforming it into a unified global entity encompassing both two-wheel and four-wheel racing disciplines. Koji Watanabe currently serves as HRC's President and Representative Director.

Core Functions and Philosophy
HRC’s core philosophy is that "racing is a training ground for nurturing people and technology". Honda’s founder, Soichiro Honda, famously asserted that "without competing in races, cars will not improve"—and HRC serves as the operational body of this vision. Beyond the research, design, and engineering of race cars and engines, HRC oversees full-scale race operations, including driver development programmes, team management, and trackside technical support. The expertise and technical insights gained on the track are fed directly back into Honda’s mass-production vehicle development, establishing a complete "track-to-road" technology transfer loop.

MotoGP: Core Competitive Arena
MotoGP represents HRC's longest-standing and most successful racing arena. In the premier class, HRC has amassed 25 Teams' Championships, 21 Riders' Championships, and 313 Grand Prix victories. The 2026 season marks Honda's 60th anniversary of competing in the premier class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing, with HRC lining up under the "Honda HRC Castrol" banner, featuring riders Luca Marini and Joan Mir aboard the RC213V. In the 2025 season, HRC staged a notable resurgence in MotoGP, securing 285 constructor points—a 210-point leap from the previous year—which earned them an upgrade from Concession Rank D to Rank C, while cutting the gap to the race winner from 30 seconds to 13.5 seconds. At the 2026 Spanish GP in Jerez, Marini finished in 13th position, while Mir crossed the line in 15th.

F1: Return of the Power Unit Supplier
HRC participates in Formula 1 as a power unit supplier. Between 2018 and 2025, HRC supplied power unit technical support to Scuderia Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing, partnering with Red Bull to capture the Drivers' World Championship in 2021. The 2025 season marked the final year of the collaboration between HRC and the Red Bull Group. From the 2026 season onwards, HRC returns to F1 as the official works power unit supplier for the Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team, delivering the RA626H power unit bearing Honda's new corporate "H" mark. HRC President Koji Watanabe stated that F1 serves as a "moving laboratory" for training engineers, where technical talent refined under extreme conditions will cascade into the development of Honda's e:HEV hybrid technology, eVTOL aircraft, and next-generation mobility solutions.

Suzuka 8 Hours: Traditional Stronghold
The Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Race is a cornerstone of HRC's motorcycle endurance racing portfolio. In July 2026, HRC claimed its fifth consecutive victory at the Suzuka 8 Hours, marking Honda's 32nd overall triumph in the endurance classic. In 2024, Team HRC won the 45th edition of the Suzuka 8 Hours to complete a hat-trick of three straight wins, taking Honda’s all-time victory tally in the event to 30.

Other Motorsport Commitments
HRC's motorsport footprint extends across multiple global disciplines. In the Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK), HRC participates as a factory team. In the Super Taikyu Series, HRC campaigns the CIVIC TYPE R HRC Concept in the ST-Q class, running on E20 low-carbon petrol and bio-based engine oil to advance carbon neutrality goals in motorsport. In off-road endurance, HRC made its factory return to the Dakar Rally in the 2010s. Over in the FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP), HRC partnered with Tim Gajser to clinch the 2019 MXGP championship title.

High-Performance Production Cars: The HRC Brand
HRC is not only a motorsport division, but also a dedicated performance sub-brand for Honda's road cars. Positioned above the Type R series, HRC directly integrates track-honed engineering philosophies and tuning into production models. In 2026, HRC introduced the CIVIC TYPE R HRC Concept and track-tested HRC Performance Parts in the Super Taikyu Series, including aerodynamic components jointly developed with Honda Access, with validation data feeding directly into the development of genuine HRC-branded performance parts.

Global Organisational Structure
HRC operates two main R&D centres in Japan: the Sakura Centre, which focuses on four-wheel racing, and the Asaka Centre, dedicated to two-wheel motorsport. In 2023, Honda integrated its US motorsport arm, HPD, into HRC US, establishing an integrated global operational network spanning Japan, the United States, and Europe to support the expanding F1 calendar and growing North American motorsport programmes. Concurrently, HRC provides competition parts and technical support to grassroots and customer racing teams through 30 domestic service centres across Japan.
