Honda N-Box

2026-10-11 09:10:00

Model Overview

The Honda N-Box is a kei-car (kei jidosha) produced by Honda Motor Co., Ltd., positioned as a super height wagon. The first-generation N-Box debuted in December 2011, quickly earning widespread market acclaim courtesy of Honda's signature "Center Tank Layout" that unlocks cabin roominess well beyond its segment dimensions, coupled with practical dual power sliding rear doors. The model currently on sale is the third generation, which was introduced in October 2023 and received a facelift in April 2025. In Japan, the N-Box has maintained its crown as the overall best-selling new car (including standard passenger vehicles) for eight consecutive financial years (FY2017–FY2024), making it a true "national car" of Japan. It remains an exclusive model for the Japanese domestic market (JDM) and has not been officially launched in mainland China.

Design Language

The third-generation N-Box retains the model line's signature "tall box" silhouette, embodying Honda's "Man Maximum, Machine Minimum" (M/M) design philosophy. In strict accordance with Japanese kei-car regulations, it measures 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,790–1,815 mm in height, with a 2,520 mm wheelbase. Up front, the sleek V-shaped front grille merges seamlessly into the headlamp clusters. Two distinct styling themes are available: the standard version and the sportier Custom variant—the latter distinguished by an aggressive aero bodykit and sharper detailing. Following its 2025 facelift, the Custom variant gains dark chrome-accented LED fog lamps for an elevated, more premium aesthetic. The lineup also features an outdoor crossover-inspired N-Box Joy variant, fitted with rugged black body cladding, retro-style wheels, and bespoke roof rails.

Inside, the cabin takes on a clean, functional design layout, featuring a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an optional 9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, with ample physical buttons and switches retained for effortless tactile operation on the move. The front row adopts a walkthrough flat floor, while higher-spec variants gain seat heaters and two-tone interior upholstery schemes.

Powertrain & Performance

The N-Box is powered by a kei-car compliant 658cc in-line three-cylinder DOHC engine, available in two outputs:

  • Naturally Aspirated Variant: Maximum output of 58 PS (43 kW) and 65 Nm of peak torque

  • Turbocharged Variant: Maximum output of 64 PS (47 kW) and 104 Nm of peak torque

Both engine options are paired with a continuous variable transmission (CVT), with a choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (4WD) layouts. In terms of fuel economy on the WLTC test cycle, the FWD version returns around 21.6 km/L (approx. 4.6 L/100 km), while the 4WD version achieves approximately 19.4 km/L (approx. 5.2 L/100 km).

Chassis & Handling

Built on Honda's dedicated kei-car platform, the central fuel tank layout allows for an ultra-low floor, resulting in a cavernous cabin measuring 2,125 mm in interior length and 1,400 mm in height. The suspension uses a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam setup, tuned predominantly for pliant, comfortable urban commuting. The dual sliding doors make getting in and out effortless in narrow parking lots, while the 4WD version offers extra traction on slippery or wet surfaces.

Cabin & Features

The N-Box adopts a practical 4-seater layout, where all four individual seats can slide fore and aft, and the rear seats feature 50:50 split-folding capability to yield a completely flat boot floor. With its generous 2,125 mm interior length, it comfortably seats four adults with legroom rivalling that of a D-segment sedan. On the comfort and convenience front, high-spec grades feature automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a multifunction steering wheel. A wheelchair-accessible welfare version dubbed "N-Box Slope" is also offered for passengers with reduced mobility.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Every N-Box comes standard with the Honda SENSING advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Key active safety features include Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) (with pedestrian detection), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (with Low-Speed Follow), and Auto High Beam (AHB). Top-tier variants can be optioned with a 360-degree multi-view parking camera system. Passive safety is bolstered by a high-rigidity chassis frame and a full array of airbags.

Market Performance & Verdict

The N-Box is nothing short of a market phenomenon in Japan. From FY2017 through FY2024, it held the title of Japan's best-selling new passenger vehicle overall for eight consecutive years, establishing a market presence that goes far beyond a typical kei-car. In FY2024, the N-Box commanded a 7% market share in the entire kei-car segment, firmly leading the pack. Its owner base spans across young families to senior drivers, with Honda dealers reporting exceptionally high repeat-purchase rates and brand loyalty.

Automotive media reviews have consistently lauded the N-Box for its class-leading space packaging, the sheer convenience of powered sliding doors, the robust active safety of Honda SENSING, and its accessible pricing (starting from around JPY 1,739,100, or approx. RM84,000). A fully optioned, range-topping Custom Turbo can reach upwards of JPY 2.93 million (approx. RM140,000), underlining its strong upmarket appeal. That said, reviewers also note its relatively tall centre of gravity and modest outright acceleration—trade-offs inherent to the kei-car class.
