Model Overview

The Honda Freed is a compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) produced by Honda, slotted between traditional kei cars and standard-sized MPVs, renowned for its "just right size" packaging and versatile cabin space. Built upon Honda's globally acclaimed Fit/Jazz platform, it is widely dubbed the "upsized Jazz". The first-generation Freed debuted in 2008, and as of 2026, the model currently on sale is its third-generation iteration. The Freed is available in two distinct styling flavours: AIR (Standard) and CROSSTAR (Crossover) , alongside versatile 5-seater, 6-seater, and 7-seater configurations. In the Japanese domestic market, prices start from around 2,508,000 yen, which converts to approximately RM120,000.
Design Language
The third-generation Honda Freed adopts an all-new design language. The standard AIR variant features clean, minimalist styling, with a front grille that flows seamlessly into the headlamps to accentuate horizontal visual width and deliver a planted MPV stance. In contrast, the CROSSTAR crossover variant takes a bolder approach, equipped with a dedicated crossover body kit including black protective cladding, roof rails, and rugged front and rear bumpers to create an SUV-inspired persona.
The side profile remains upright and boxy to maximise interior headroom and cargo volume, retaining the MPV's signature dual sliding doors for effortless passenger ingress and egress. Around the back, vertically stacked tail lights provide immediate visual distinction. The AIR variant offers up to 9 exterior colour choices, while the CROSSTAR comes with 8. Inside, the cabin features a clean, uncluttered layout with a tiered dashboard and a free-standing touchscreen infotainment display.
Powertrain and Performance
The Honda Freed is available with a choice of two powertrains: petrol and hybrid:
Petrol Variant: Powered by a 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. It produces a maximum output of 87 kW (118 PS) and 142 Nm of peak torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel consumption under the WLTC test cycle is rated at around 19.5 km/L (approx. 5.1 L/100 km).
Hybrid Variant (e:HEV) : Powered by Honda's proprietary e:HEV dual-motor hybrid system, comprising a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, dual electric motors, a lithium-ion battery pack, and an e-CVT gearbox. The system automatically toggles between EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive modes according to driving conditions. The petrol engine delivers 78 kW (106 PS) and 127 Nm of torque, while the electric propulsion motor generates 90 kW (123 PS) and 253 Nm of torque. Under the WLTC cycle, fuel economy is rated between 21.1 km/L and 25.6 km/L.
Chassis and Handling
Underneath, suspension duties are handled by front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam setup. The lineup offers a choice between Front-Wheel Drive (FF) and Real-Time All-Wheel Drive (4WD) , with the 4WD system delivering superior traction on wet or slippery surfaces. The MPV boasts a tight turning radius of just 5.2 metres, allowing for effortless U-turns and nimble manoeuvring through narrow city streets and tight parking bays. Braking is managed by front ventilated discs and rear drums.
Cabin and Features
The Freed's interior is engineered around practicality and versatility, offering 5-seater (2+3), 6-seater (2+2+2), and 7-seater (2+3+2) seating layouts. The 6-seater variant features second-row individual captain seats to provide generous personal space. The floating centre touchscreen is available in 8-inch, 9-inch, or 11.4-inch display sizes. The front cabin features a walk-through flat-floor design, complemented by practical touches such as a foldable centre console armrest and rear seatback tray tables. Convenience amenities include standard dual power sliding doors, roof-mounted rear air conditioning blower vents, and Type-C USB charging ports. The Welcab mobility version features a flat boot floor design for seamless wheelchair ramp access. High-spec hybrid variants also come equipped with a PTC auxiliary electric cabin heater, ensuring rapid heating in cold weather.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the Honda Freed comes standard across the entire range with the Honda SENSING active safety suite. This comprehensive driver assistance package includes Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow. Standard active safety equipment also includes Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Selected higher trims can be optioned with advanced features such as Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. For passive safety, the body structure incorporates high-tensile steel reinforcements and Honda's proprietary G-CON crash safety architecture to effectively absorb and dissipate collision forces. In Japan's JNCAP crash safety tests, the Freed achieved a full 5-star safety rating. Connected features are supported via the Honda CONNECT telematics system, allowing owners to remotely operate the air conditioning and check the vehicle's location using a smartphone.
Market Performance and Reception
The Honda Freed has delivered outstanding sales results in its home market of Japan. In the first half of 2025, it ranked 4th on Japan's overall new car sales leaderboard with 49,094 units registered. The MPV also clinched the prestigious 2024–2025 Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) award, making history as the first and only MPV ever to secure the top honour. In markets like Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Freed has similarly earned strong popularity among family buyers thanks to its exceptional space utilisation and everyday practicality. However, as of 2026, Honda has not officially introduced the Freed to the mainland Chinese market. Despite persistent rumours and strong consumer interest regarding potential local assembly or official imports, whether the Freed will enter that fiercely contested segment remains uncertain. Its chief rival in the class is the Toyota Sienta. With its "compact exterior, expansive interior" philosophy, efficient e:HEV hybrid powertrain, and ultra-flexible seating arrangements, the Freed remains a benchmark in the compact MPV category.
