Honda Civic

2026-10-01 23:10:00

The Honda Civic is a global strategic compact sedan under Honda, introduced for local production and sold by Dongfeng Honda. Since its debut in 1972, the Civic has evolved through eleven generations, with cumulative global sales approaching 30 million units. In 2006, the eighth-generation Civic was first introduced for local production in China by Dongfeng Honda. As of June 2026, the latest model on sale is the 2026 annual facelift, offering four variants across the range with a current price range of RM97,900 to RM129,900. Key rivals to the Civic include the Volkswagen Sagitar, Nissan Sylphy, and Geely Xingrui.

Design Language

The 2026 Civic carries forward the eleventh-generation family design language while further sharpening its sporty visual character. The front fascia features a hexagonal honeycomb grille with a blacked-out finish, flanked by slim, sharp headlamp clusters to deliver an aggressive look. Its side profile retains the signature low-slung fastback silhouette, complemented by dual-tone petal-style alloy wheels. At the rear, the split LED tail lamps also feature darkened internals, with a dual single-exit exhaust layout underscoring the car's sporty stance. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,685 mm in length, 1,802 mm in width, and 1,415 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm.

The headline update for this facelift is the introduction of the "Civic China 20th Anniversary Edition" to celebrate two decades of the Civic nameplate in the Chinese market. This edition comes finished in an exclusive Rallye Red exterior paint (a signature Civic shade shared with the Type R) and is fitted with a complete blacked-out aero kit—including the grille, wing mirror caps, door handles, side skirts, and rear spoiler—along with 17-inch sport alloy wheels. Inside, the 2026 Civic features a 10.2-inch full digital instrument cluster alongside a 9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, paired with full-width continuous air-con vents that visually widen the cabin. The 20th Anniversary Edition adds light-coloured leather upholstery, with matching leather wrapping the steering wheel and gear selector, complemented by red ambient lighting across the centre console to cultivate a dynamic cabin ambience.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 Civic is powered exclusively across the lineup by a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo direct-injection engine, available in two states of tune. The low-output variant (180TURBO) develops 95 kW (129 PS) and 180 Nm of peak torque; the high-output variant (240TURBO) delivers 134 kW (182 PS) and a peak torque of 240 Nm. Both powertrains are paired with a G-Design Shift CVT gearbox. Under the WLTC cycle, the low-output model posts a combined fuel consumption of 5.79 L/100 km, while the high-output variants return between 6.01 L and 6.36 L/100 km depending on the trim. Previously, the 2025 and earlier iterations offered a 2.0L e:HEV petrol-electric hybrid variant featuring Honda's fourth-generation i-MMD hybrid system, producing a combined output of 203 PS with fuel consumption as low as 4.39 L/100 km on the WLTC cycle. However, as of June 2026, the on-sale 2026 lineup consists entirely of pure petrol variants, with no e:HEV hybrid option available.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the 2026 Civic rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup, mounted to a high-rigidity aluminium subframe. In the RM100,000 joint-venture sedan segment, a rear multi-link independent suspension has become increasingly uncommon, allowing the Civic to maintain its handling advantage. The suspension is tuned to deliver road feel while maintaining everyday ride comfort, effectively soaking up road surface imperfections. The steering incorporates a DPA-EPS dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power steering system, which provides light, effortless steering at low speeds for urban driving and weighs up reassuringly at highway speeds for enhanced stability. Braking is handled by front ventilated discs and solid rear discs.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the 2026 Civic comes standard across the board with a 10.2-inch full-colour TFT digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch floating central touchscreen. The infotainment setup runs on the Honda CONNECT 4.0 intelligent connectivity system, featuring smart voice command, online navigation, smartphone remote telematics, OTA software updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Seat upholstery is upgraded to leather on the China 20th Anniversary Edition and higher trims; standard practical equipment across the range includes heated wing mirrors, single-colour ambient lighting, and an 8-speaker audio system. Boot capacity stands at 440 litres, with split-folding rear seatbacks to expand cargo versatility.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, the 2026 Civic is fitted with 10 airbags as standard across all variants. The chassis incorporates Honda's proprietary ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure to enhance impact energy absorption and dissipation during a collision. For active safety, upper-spec models feature the Honda SENSING driver assistance suite, an L2 semi-autonomous system powered by the fusion of millimetre-wave radar and a monocular front camera. The suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) with Forward Collision Warning and pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Information, and Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB).

Market Performance and Verdict

Since its local debut in 2006, cumulative sales of the Honda Civic in China have surpassed 2 million units. However, sales have faced headwinds in recent years amidst the rapid rise of domestic new energy vehicles (NEVs) and intensifying market competition. Official data shows full-year Civic sales in 2025 stood at around 50,700 units; Q1 2026 deliveries totalled 7,171 units, with March recording 1,841 units; and May 2026 sales dipped further to 1,644 units. To counter sales pressure, the 2026 Civic underwent an official price cut of up to RM32,000 compared to the 2025 model, lowering its starting price from RM129,900 to RM97,900.

The Civic's core strengths remain its proven 1.5T Earth Dreams powertrain, agile handling courtesy of the rear multi-link independent setup, and enduring brand goodwill. Nevertheless, it faces a somewhat blurred product positioning—losing some driving-enthusiast appeal in its pivot towards family practicality, without establishing a decisive lead in interior space or plush comfort; compounding this is a relatively conservative iteration pace in the era of NEVs and intelligent cockpits. On the whole, the Civic retains commendable product substance and brand appeal in the RM100,000-class sports sedan space, but it will need clearer strategic direction in electrification and model positioning to regain strong momentum.
