Hurtan (Hurtan Automóviles) is a top-tier custom classic car manufacturer originating from Granada, Spain. The brand was originally founded by Juan Hurtado González in 1992, with its headquarters still located in Granada, Spain, and a global workforce of approximately 10 people. The brand's core philosophy is "every car is customized for the customer", viewing automobiles as works of art, focusing on pure handcrafting to create customized luxury cars with the appearance of classic British sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s, using the chassis and engines of modern models such as Mazda MX-5 and Chrysler PT Cruiser. Due to its stylistic positioning being similar to Japan's Mitsuoka, the brand is hailed by the media as "the Mitsuoka from Spain". Most of Hurtan's current sales are concentrated in Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
Hurtan's history dates back to 1992. At that time, Juan Hurtado González was deeply influenced by the design of European classic sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s, and conceived the idea of building his dream car. He founded Hurtan in Granada, Andalusia Autonomous Region, Spain in 1992, and launched the brand's first model Albaycín T2 in the same year. In the first decade of the brand's establishment, Hurtan maintained an extremely niche customization model with very low annual production, and its popularity within the market and industry was very limited. Although the scale was tiny, the brand never stopped adhering to the concept of classic cars, continuously creating exclusive products tailored for specific customer groups, and gradually accumulating unique body customization craftsmanship and a reserve of craftsmen, laying the foundation for subsequent technical paths and market expansion.
In its early stages, Hurtan's business scope was relatively wide, with its product line spanning sedans and commercial vehicles. From the 1990s to the early 21st century, Hurtan's most important technical route was adopting mature chassis and powertrains from other manufacturers, focusing on the secondary design and full handcrafting of upstream body panels. After entering the 2010s, Hurtan entered a period of maturity and diversification in classic customization technology. 2017 was a landmark year for the brand's product line expansion. In that year, Hurtan launched a custom model based on the Chrysler PT Cruiser, and followed the trend to release an ultra-retro convertible version. At the same time, Hurtan also launched a retro commercial vehicle based on the Fiat Ducato modification in the same year.
2020 to 2022 was a highlight period where the Hurtan brand emerged on the international stage and received official recognition. From 2020 to 2021, the brand focused its technical route on the new generation Mazda MX-5 (ND) platform and quickly launched its epoch-making product——Grand Albaycín, obtaining official cooperation authorization from the Mazda OEM. In 2022, coinciding with the brand's 30th anniversary, Hurtan, based on Grand Albaycín, launched a limited 30th Anniversary Edition with only 6 units worldwide, introducing three limited paint colors for customization services: Midnight Blue, Cherry Red, and Matte Grey, and offering manual soft top or electric hard top options.
All Hurtan products are limited custom, with each one possessing uniqueness and highly personalized choices. The brand currently has four major series under its umbrella:
Hurtan Grand Albaycín—— The brand's flagship product line, built on the Mazda MX-5 (ND) chassis, available in Hardtop Coupe (RF) and Soft Top Convertible two structures. In terms of design, Grand Albaycín completely abandoned the original modern style of the MX-5, adopting completely different retro body sheet metal parts, completely reshaping everything from the hood, fenders to the rear end, and equipped with high wheel arches, embedded split round lights, and dual exhaust with quad tips. This series offers 1.5L and 2.0L naturally aspirated engines.
Hurtan Author—— A retro luxury car built on the Chrysler PT Cruiser chassis, offering Four-door Sedan and Two-door Convertible two versions, the whole vehicle design inspiration can be traced back to the pre-WWII Art Deco, the front end is equipped with a signature huge upright chrome grille and fenders widening on both sides, the car body lines inspiration comes from the pre-war European luxury cars of the 1930s and 1940s. This model is equipped with a 2.4L inline-four engine, offering a 143 horsepower naturally aspirated version and a 223 horsepower turbocharged version. Each Author built requires about 400 working hours.
Hurtan Vintage—— A retro tough off-road SUV built on the Jeep Wrangler chassis, it is a brand's attempt to layout in the tough off-road field.
Hurtan Route 44—— A retro large camper/Van built on the Fiat Ducato large commercial vehicle chassis, focusing on the combination of spacious interior space and retro appearance, its front end is changed to a full chrome upright grille design similar to the old British double-decker bus, round headlights matching the retro hood are highly recognizable. Each one requires about 370 working hours to build, the starting price is higher than Author.
Hurtan achieved a leap in brand attention and order volume in the early 2020s. When Grand Albaycín was released in 2021, the brand's quota of 30 units production received a positive response in the global market. The first batch of models received orders from multiple global markets at prices of 59,000 Euros (approx. 460,000 RMB) for the 1.5L version and 82,300 Euros (approx. 640,000 RMB) for the 2.0L version, among which Asian and Middle Eastern markets accounted for the highest proportion.
In terms of production volume, Hurtan's annual production around 2021 was about 30 vehicles, further increased in 2025. According to the production plan signed between Hurtan and Mazda, it still maintains a small-scale manual production operation mode. The 6 units 30th Anniversary Edition launched in 2022 was also quickly reserved by collectors. Hurtan's products are extremely rare in the public market and secondary market due to extremely limited production volume and most being made-to-order production, the brand rarely discloses its revenue data at the capital and financial levels. Currently, most of its global sales revenue still comes from Asian and Middle Eastern markets, and sales in Europe focus on Germany, France, Norway, and Italy.
Hurtan's technical route is not the independent research and development of the car's basic engine and platform, but the core key craft——Full Handcrafted Classic Retrofit Technology, reshaping the external image of cars through exquisite manual craftsmanship.
Classic Body Restoration Technology is Hurtan's core competitiveness. Hurtan, through a full manual method, completely replaces all original external skins of the car with metal sheets and composite materials, independently designing hoods, fenders, round wheel arches, and chrome grilles featuring the characteristics of the 1930s to 1960s. The team ensures the new body shape is not only retro but also perfectly adapts to modern chassis space, headlights, sensors, and aerodynamic requirements through manual sampling and highly customized mold development solutions. Grand Albaycín is the culmination of its classic body restoration technology——its appearance completely hides any trace of the MX-5, instead replicating the unique charm of 1960s British sports cars.
Powertrain Calibration: Hurtan does not perform engine internal modifications or ECU remanufacturing, but instead completely follows the powertrain calibration parameters of the original vehicle manufacturer (Mazda, Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep). On Grand Albaycín, Hurtan retains the Mazda OEM 1.5L Skyactiv-G (132 horsepower) and 2.0L Skyactiv-G (184 horsepower) naturally aspirated engines of MX-5, and matches their original Mazda 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions. This positioning of paralleling retro appearance with reliable modern mechanical performance reduces Hurtan's engineering investment in powertrain and electrical systems research and matching.
Custom Interior Craftsmanship and Low-Volume Manual Assembly is an important means for Hurtan to maintain its unique luxury tone. Hurtan's vehicle interiors usually adopt large quantities of exclusive materials such as high-quality leather, raw wood panels, diamond stitching, and hand-sewn seats, while retaining the original dashboard structure. In the interior upgrade of Grand Albaycín, in addition to retaining the MX-5 basic interior framework, the seats use white leather material with Hurtan embroidery, the door panels and seats are wrapped with diamond-patterned leather, and the door panels are supplemented with large wood panels to enhance the classical luxury atmosphere.
Hurtan's overseas business has covered Asian, Middle Eastern, and European markets. Since the 2020s, the brand's majority sales are concentrated in the Asian and Middle Eastern regions. Since 2021, Hurtan has established a distribution network targeting the European market, with distributors covering countries such as Germany, France, Norway, and Italy. The brand achieved cross-market brand promotion in an extremely asset-light manner by delivering limited models to selected partners in these regions. In Russia and the UAE, Hurtan also established cooperation with distributors. In the American market, Hurtan began exploring brand awareness and distribution networks on a small scale in 2023. All of Hurtan's R&D and manufacturing activities are completely concentrated in the Granada, Spain headquarters, a craftsman team of about 10 people is responsible for all core links from metal stamping, manual polishing to final assembly, and all complete vehicles are exported from Spain to all over the world.
Hurtan's vision is, under the premise of maintaining pure handcrafted customization in this extremely scarce niche segment, to further consolidate its brand positioning of "classic collector-grade car manufacturer". At the product level, the brand will continue to rely on the mature mechanical platforms of mainstream brands (mainly Mazda, perhaps continuing cooperation with Jeep, etc.), continuously launching limited new cars for different era styles. The brand takes Grand Albaycín and the 30th Anniversary Edition as its long-term product cornerstones, and has already steadily launched product series on multiple platforms such as Vintage (based on Jeep Wrangler) and Route 44 (based on Fiat Ducato), potentially further expanding the product line of personalized custom models in the future. In terms of production volume, Hurtan will continue to maintain a very restrained annual production volume, ensuring that every car is a masterpiece with extremely low production and sales figures, thereby maintaining its bargaining power in the custom modification market while attracting collectors and top-tier consumers, and avoiding falling into the scale competition of traditional car manufacturers. Overall, Hurtan's business model has extremely low dependency on capital market demands, and its future will firmly be based on a small-scale craftsman production line centered on Granada, Spain, dedicated to doing better the artistry, retro tone, and ultimate handcrafted refinement of every car.
