Company Profile

GreenPower Motor Company is a major Canadian electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. Unlike standard car builders, GreenPower designs and builds purpose-built, zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, serving as a primary backbone for North American cargo logistics, transit fleets, and zero-emission school transport.

  • Official Corporate Name: GreenPower Motor Company Inc.
  • Headquarters: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
  • Founded: 2010
  • Core Business: All-electric Class 4 cargo vans, purpose-built electric school buses, high-floor and low-floor transit buses, and zero-emission cab & chassis platforms.
  • Industrial Infrastructure: Global corporate headquarters located in Vancouver, Canada, supported by primary US manufacturing plants in Porterville, California, and South Charleston, West Virginia.

Development History

The company was established in 2010 in Vancouver with a clear industrial vision: to accelerate the adoption of commercial electric vehicles by making battery-electric buses and trucks affordable, durable, and easy to deploy. Rather than retrofitting old diesel or petrol chassis, the company pioneered a "clean-sheet" engineering approach, developing completely bespoke chassis optimized natively for battery-electric layouts from day one.

GreenPower's expansion scaled up across international financial and logistical lines:

  • The Public Listings: Demonstrating strong commercial maturity, GreenPower listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange (TSXV) in November 2015, followed by its high-profile US initial public offering (IPO) and NASDAQ listing (NASDAQ: GP) in August 2020.
  • The EV Star Deployment (2020s): The company introduced its definitive flagship multi-purpose platform, the EV Star. The Class 4 electric vehicle family—comprising cargo vans, passenger shuttles, and cutaways—became an immense commercial success, securing major fleet replacement orders from global retailers and shipping giants operating across Canada and the United States.

Technical Innovation & Adaptability

The mechanical hallmark of a GreenPower vehicle is its Proprietary Monocoque Structure. Instead of bolting a heavy body onto a standard truck frame, GreenPower integrates the chassis frame and body shell into a single, light-weight steel matrix, optimizing safety, maximizing interior room, and dramatically lowering structural wear over decades of rough fleet use.

To solve the extreme payload demands of last-mile delivery, GreenPower’s EV Star Cargo Van stands out as the only Class 4 purpose-built all-electric cargo van in North America. It features standard dual-charging capabilities (allowing both fast DC charging and versatile Level 2 AC overnight charging) and packs an exceptionally dense lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery bank.

This high-voltage configuration grants a reliable range of up to 150 miles (241 km) while driving high-output electric motors that deliver maximum starting torque under heavy loads. This setup allows municipal school districts and private logistics operators to deploy green fleets into punishing Canadian winter climates without suffering massive battery performance loss.
