GAC Trumpchi GS4 PHEV

2026-09-24 14:10:00

The GAC Trumpchi GS4 PHEV is a compact plug-in hybrid SUV introduced by GAC Trumpchi during the early phase of its new energy vehicle (NEV) expansion. Serving as the electrified extension of Trumpchi's "people's car" GS4 family, this model played a pivotal role in the brand's hybridisation roadmap by converting the market advantages of its petrol models into NEV competitiveness.

Model Overview

Positioned as a compact plug-in hybrid SUV, the GS4 PHEV was developed to provide car buyers in quota-restricted cities with a practical urban mobility solution that balances cabin space with superior fuel economy.

Market Tags: Plug-in hybrid SUV, people's car spin-off, practical and economical, smooth and comfortable ride.

Design Positioning: Measuring 4,545 mm in length, 1,856 mm in width, and 1,700 mm in height with a 2,680 mm wheelbase, the exterior styling closely retains the signature family traits of the petrol-powered GS4. The cabin layout emphasises ergonomic functional zoning, tailored specifically for everyday family commuting.

Product Core: Leveraging Trumpchi's early G-MC (GAC Mechatronic Coupling) system, the GS4 PHEV delivered seamless switching between all-electric and high-efficiency hybrid modes, serving as a core pillar in building the brand's NEV portfolio between 2017 and 2020.

Development History

Background: Capitalising on the strong market foundation of the petrol GS4, GAC Trumpchi quickly completed the technical transition from an ICE platform to a plug-in hybrid architecture during the NEV subsidy window. The model's launch effectively drove rapid growth for the brand in terms of green car credits and sales volume in vehicle quota-controlled cities.

Key Evolution:

2017–2019: As the pioneer of Trumpchi's hybrid technology, the GS4 PHEV gained solid popularity among early adopters thanks to its proven durability, while generating vital real-world calibration data for the G-MC system.

2020 Facelift: Built upon the second-generation GS4, the updated PHEV variant introduced comprehensive enhancements across exterior and interior design, onboard smart tech, and overall powertrain efficiency.

Current Status (2026): With Trumpchi fully transitioning to its "Trumpchi Smart Electric Technology i-GTEC" and Xingyuan PHEV platforms, the GS4 PHEV has officially been discontinued and phased out from GAC Trumpchi's core lineup. Its market space has since been succeeded by Trumpchi's E-Series (such as the E8 and E9) and PHEV variants of the Shadow Series.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: During its active sales run, this model primarily competed against rival plug-in hybrid SUVs in the same price bracket. Backed by the massive brand equity of the petrol GS4, it stood out as a formidable contender in the RM150,000 to RM200,000 plug-in hybrid segment.

User Reputation: Owners widely praised its linear power delivery and refined NVH levels. Notably, its chassis setup delivered ride quality that ranked highly among its class peers. However, from a 2026 perspective, its pure electric range (around 60 km NEDC) and infotainment features no longer meet current buyer expectations for extended EV range and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Core Technologies

Powertrain Architecture: Powered by a dedicated hybrid system pairing a 1.5T Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with the G-MC 1.0 electromechanical coupling unit. The system supports pure electric, range-extender, and parallel hybrid modes, striking an effective balance between fuel efficiency and smooth drivability.

Chassis System: Features front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup, tuned to deliver a balance of ground clearance and supple urban ride comfort in line with its family commuter brief.

Energy Management: Equipped with a high-energy-density traction battery pack supporting multi-level regenerative braking, significantly cutting fuel consumption during stop-and-go city driving.

Future Plans

As of 2026, the Trumpchi GS4 PHEV series has concluded its product life cycle and will receive no further facelift or generation updates. GAC Trumpchi's strategic focus has shifted towards fully proprietary R&D under its "Panyu Action" roadmap, introducing advanced models such as the Trumpchi Xiangwang E8 PHEV powered by the latest Xingyuan hybrid tech. Existing owners will continue to receive dedicated aftersales and parts support. The engineering expertise accumulated through the GS4 PHEV has been systematically incorporated into Trumpchi's next-generation PHEV platform architecture, underpinning the brand's ongoing growth in the electrified era.
