GAC AION S 580

2026-09-25 07:10:00

Model Overview

The AION S Xuan 580 is a high-range variant within the AION S "Xuan" series of compact electric sedans under GAC AION. First launched in 2019, the AION S model line had surpassed 400,000 cumulative users by 2023, establishing itself as a cornerstone for GAC AION in the new energy vehicle (NEV) sedan segment. Positioned as the long-range, volume-selling variant in the range, the 2026 model year AION S Xuan 580 made a low-key debut in July 2025.

Price-wise, the 2026 Xuan 580 carries an official retail price of RM139,800. However, amidst intense market competition, pricing has seen massive fluctuations. By early June 2026, GAC AION rolled out substantial nationwide promotions of up to RM50,000, driving on-the-road transaction prices for the Xuan 580 down to as low as RM89,800. It mainly targets cost-conscious urban families seeking strong value for money and e-hailing drivers looking for minimal running costs, aiming to hold its ground in an intensely contested compact EV market.

Design Language

Visually, the AION S Xuan 580 carries over the signature sleek, avant-garde styling of the AION S family without being overly flashy. Up front, it features the brand's signature closed-off grille flanked by smoked LED headlights, while a three-section lower bumper housing prominent air ducts lends it a tasteful sporty edge amidst the clean aesthetic.

In profile, the straight roofline gently slopes into a fastback silhouette, complemented by a floating roof effect and a sharp shoulder line that visually elongates the car. At the rear, full-width smoked taillights and a subtle ducktail spoiler effectively enhance its horizontal visual stance. While rooted in a minimalist and functional design approach, the AION S Xuan 580 manages a balanced blend of modern tech appeal and everyday usability suitable for a mass-market family EV.

Powertrain and Performance

The powertrain of the AION S Xuan 580 prioritises efficiency and everyday usability, featuring a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 100 kW (approx. 136 PS) and 225 Nm of peak torque. Power delivery is smooth and linear, offering ample punch for daily city commutes and highway cruising up to a top speed of 130 km/h. While official 0-100 km/h acceleration figures are not published, power consumption stays around a frugal 12 to 12.5 kWh/100 km, keeping day-to-day running costs exceptionally low.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinned by the dedicated GEP 2.0 pure electric platform, the AION S Xuan 580 adopts a front-wheel-drive layout with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Suspension duties are handled by MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam non-independent setup at the rear. Stopping power comes from ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The electric power steering is well-weighted—light at low speeds for easy parking and reassuringly planted at highway speeds. Overall, the chassis is tuned with family comfort in mind, absorbing the majority of road imperfections with ease.

Cabin and Features

The interior is where the AION S Xuan 580 visibly differentiates itself from higher-grade variants. Compared to the upscale AION S Plus, the Xuan 580 opts for a distinctly utilitarian cabin layout, fitted with a basic 3.5-inch multi-info display alongside an 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit. The steering wheel is moulded in polyurethane with tilt-only adjustment, while the seats are upholstered in synthetic leather. Though short on high-tech flair, essential creature comforts remain intact. Standard kit includes automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-start, on-board ETC (optional on newer models), cruise control, and a practical reverse camera.

Cabin practicality is a clear highlight of the AION S Xuan 580. Measuring 4,805 mm long with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, rear passengers enjoy generous legroom. Although the roofline slightly restricts rear headroom, the 453-litre boot provides plenty of cargo capacity for family use.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the AION S Xuan 580 keeps things strictly basic. Active safety equipment includes standard electronic stability control (ESC), ABS with EBD, and traction control. Passive safety, however, is modest, featuring only dual front airbags for the driver and front passenger, omitting side and curtain airbags. Driver assistance is limited to conventional cruise control, without advanced features such as automated lane changes or automated parking. Overall, its safety and driver aid suite aligns directly with its entry-level, no-frills positioning.

Market Performance and Verdict

The AION S Xuan 580 carries substantial market pressure within the GAC AION lineup. While maintaining steady monthly sales of around 4,000 to 5,000 units in the compact EV sedan segment, it still trails behind key competitors like the BYD Qin PLUS EV and XPENG MONA M03. To defend its market share, aggressive discounting was rolled out from the second half of 2025 onwards, with heavy price cuts highlighting the cut-throat competition in the segment.

User feedback has been largely positive regarding real-world range and running economy. Powered by a 55.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, it delivers a CLTC-rated range of 505 km, offering owners genuine peace of mind against range anxiety. The flat rear floor is another well-received touch that maximizes cabin passenger space. Conversely, complaints mainly centre on equipment compromises. The diminutive 3.5-inch instrument display and 8-inch centre screen look decidedly dated next to rivals, leading to an underwhelming smart cabin experience. Additionally, the rear torsion beam suspension can feel unrefined over rough road surfaces, and the lack of side or curtain airbags leaves safety ratings on the conservative side.

All in all, the AION S Xuan 580 is a car with clear-cut strengths and compromises. It remains a compelling, practical choice for buyers seeking dependable electric range and exceptional value for money; however, for those demanding cutting-edge technology, premium cabin refinement, and advanced driver assistance, rival offerings will likely prove more appealing.
