Ferrari Monza SP2

2026-10-08 20:00:01

The Ferrari Monza SP2 is a limited-edition, two-seater road-going sports car unveiled in September 2018 by Italian supercar manufacturer Ferrari, serving as the pioneer model for its all-new ICONA series. The "Monza" moniker pays homage to the brand's storied racing heritage at Italy's Monza Circuit, drawing design cues from classic 1950s Ferrari Barchetta racers including the 166 MM, 750 Monza, and 860 Monza. Together with the single-seater SP1, the Monza SP2 formed the debut line-up of the ICONA series, with production strictly limited to 499 units worldwide across both variants. The model was offered exclusively to Ferrari's top-tier VIP clientele and collectors. Production of the Monza SP2 officially drew to a close in 2022.

Design Language

The hallmark design trait of the Monza SP2 is the total omission of a conventional roof and physical windscreen, adopting the iconic Barchetta (literally "little boat") silhouette. This design language draws direct inspiration from the legendary Ferrari race cars that dominated Monza in the 1950s. Built around a full carbon-fibre monocoque, the sleek body lines flow seamlessly from the headlights straight to the rear, devoid of any superfluous character lines or decorative elements. The front end sports a low-slung, wide stance with a massive radiator air dam, exuding pure motorsport presence.

The most distinctive exterior feature is the complete absence of a roof and windscreen. To deliver driving comfort without a physical windscreen, the Monza SP2 employs Ferrari's patented "Virtual Wind Shield" technology. This channels airflow through two intake grilles at the front to create a pressure differential via central and outer vents on the bonnet, deflecting high-speed airflow over and around the driver. Integrated into the fairing ahead of the instrument binnacle and steering wheel, this system effectively manages aerodynamic flow to ensure open-cockpit comfort.

The Monza SP2 features a two-seater layout, setting it apart from the single-seater SP1 and allowing the driver to share the visceral open-top experience with a passenger. The vehicle comes equipped with wide, upward-opening butterfly doors on both sides. The rear styling draws inspiration from the 750 Monza and 375 MM, highlighted by a continuous, flowing light strip serving as the tail lamp and brake light. Dimensionally, the car measures 4,657 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, and 1,155 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm. Its dry weight is rated at just around 1,500 kg. Thanks to its groundbreaking retro-futuristic aesthetic, the Monza SP2 bagged the "Most Beautiful Supercar of 2018" accolade, alongside the 2019 iF Design Gold Award and the 2019 Red Dot Design Award "Best of the Best".

Powertrain & Performance

Powering the Monza SP2 is a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine codenamed F140 GC. Derived from the 812 Superfast's 65-degree F140-series V12, it benefits from optimised intake duct fluid dynamics to hike maximum output to 810 hp (596 kW) and peak torque to 719 N·m. Maximum power is delivered at 8,500 rpm, with peak torque arriving at 7,000 rpm, making it one of the most potent naturally aspirated production V12 engines built by Ferrari at the time. The powertrain is mated to a 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission. Performance-wise, the 0-100 km/h sprint is settled in a blistering 2.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h takes 7.9 seconds, and top speed exceeds 300 km/h. It delivers a WLTP combined fuel consumption of 16.1 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 366 g/km. The Monza SP2 boasts the best power-to-weight ratio in its class among Barchetta models.

Chassis & Handling

Underpinned by the 812 Superfast chassis platform, the Monza SP2 features a front mid-engine, rear-wheel drive setup. Both the chassis and bodyshell are constructed entirely from carbon-fibre composites, with the outer body panels utilising aerospace-grade T800 carbon fibre. The suspension setup comprises front double wishbones and a rear multi-link independent setup. On the electronics front, it features the Virtual Short Wheelbase (Virtual Short Wheelbase) system—first introduced on the F12tdf and 812 Superfast—alongside an EPS electric power steering system. Braking duties are handled by carbon-ceramic brake discs measuring 398 mm up front and 360 mm at the rear. It rides on tyres sized 275/30 ZR21 at the front and 315/30 ZR20 at the rear. With a dry weight of just 1,500 kg, it is 160 kg lighter than the platform-sharing 812 Superfast.

Cockpit & Equipment

The Monza SP2 features a dual independent cockpit layout. The cabin is strictly driver-focused, adopting a "three-tier" architectural concept: the second tier houses driving-centric elements such as the instrument cluster, steering wheel, and air conditioning vents, while the third tier comprises the climate control, navigation, and trip display switchgear angled on the driver's armrest console. The interior is lavishly appointed with exposed carbon fibre and vintage leather trim. Seating comes in the form of carbon-fibre racing seats paired with multi-point seatbelts. A sculpted, aerodynamic carbon-fibre rear-view mirror is mounted between the twin cockpits, while the instrument binnacle features a signature yellow centre-mounted analogue dial. Furthermore, Ferrari partnered with luxury fashion houses Loro Piana and Berluti to craft bespoke driving overalls, helmets, gloves, and accessories exclusively for owners.

Safety & Intelligent Driving

In terms of active and passive safety, the Monza SP2 is equipped with features that meet modern standards. Given the complete absence of a roof and windscreen, drivers must wear a professional helmet when operating the vehicle. In terms of passive safety, the carbon-fibre monocoque delivers exceptional crash protection. For active safety, the vehicle is fitted with auxiliary functions such as a suspension lifter. Ferrari also offered Monza SP2 owners entry into its exclusive "Cavalcade Icona" driving experience events.

Market Performance & Reception

The Monza SP2 was strictly limited to 499 units globally (inclusive of SP1 and SP2). The model was sold on an invitation-only basis, available for purchase exclusively by Ferrari's most loyal VIP clients and collectors. Ferrari did not set a standardised official retail price, instead offering bespoke quotations tailored to client backgrounds, regional markets, and individual personalisation specifications. In major markets, base prices generally exceeded RM2,000,000, with the final delivery price often surpassing RM2,500,000 following high-specification options. Media reports indicated that F1 Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen acquired a Monza SP2 for RM1,600,000. Other high-profile owners include football star Zlatan Ibrahimović and British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. As the trailblazer of the ICONA series, the Monza SP2—with its 840 hp naturally aspirated V12 powertrain, open-top Barchetta two-seater layout, and heritage-inspired ethos—pioneered the marque's brand-new direction of fusing classic retro styling with modern engineering technology.
