FE Fanboost

Definition and Core Mechanism
Fanboost was an exclusive interactive feature introduced by Formula E in its inaugural 2014/15 season, marking the first regulatory format in global motorsport to allow fans to directly influence race outcomes. Its core concept was straightforward: fans voted for their favourite drivers via official channels, and the drivers with the highest votes were awarded a temporary power boost during the race for overtaking or defending positions.

Voting Rules and Allocation
Voting typically opened a week prior to race day and closed six minutes into the main race. Fans could cast their votes via the official Formula E website, official app, or social media platforms without requiring registration. The drivers with the most votes in each race were granted Fanboost access. The number of recipients varied across seasons: initially awarded to the top three drivers, before expanding to the top five in later seasons.

Power Boost Specifications
The additional power delivered by Fanboost evolved alongside successive race car generations. During the Gen1 era, standard race power output was rated at 180kW, with Fanboost temporarily bumping output to 200kW for roughly five seconds. Drivers could deploy it at their discretion during the race, though it was strictly limited to a single use. This brief power window was often enough to execute a crucial overtake into the braking zone at the end of a straight.

Philosophy and Controversy
Formula E founder Alejandro Agag positioned Fanboost as an embodiment of "true interactivity," designed to engage fans directly through social media and attract a younger demographic. Agag emphasised that Fanboost only aided "drivers already competing at the front" and could not miraculously hand victory to those lagging far behind, thus avoiding any fundamental compromise to sporting fairness.

However, the system was mired in controversy from the outset. Several drivers questioned the vulnerability of voting results to manipulation, with Audi driver Daniel Abt once publicly accusing rivals of "cheating" and labelling the system's susceptibility to rigging as "a disaster". Some fans also viewed Fanboost as a mere "gimmick" that compromised the purity of winning purely on driver skill.

Phasing Out
Fanboost spanned eight seasons in Formula E (from the 2014/15 to 2021/22 seasons) before it was eventually dropped. Formula E established Attack Mode as its replacement power-boost mechanism, requiring drivers to drive off the optimal racing line to manually activate it—sacrificing track position for extra power—which garnered far greater recognition for sporting fairness and tactical depth. When reflecting on the series' innovations, Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo still cited Fanboost alongside Attack Mode as iconic entertainment-driven regulatory experiments in Formula E history.
