Extreme E (Electric Off-Road Rally Championship)

Definition and Historical Status
Extreme E is an all-electric off-road rally series founded in 2021 by Formula E founder Alejandro Agag. Sharing identical roots with Formula E, the championship was conceived as the natural extension of electric motorsport into the off-road arena. The series' core philosophy went beyond pure racing, leveraging the motorsport platform to highlight climate change and environmental conservation by staging events in extreme, remote locations worldwide severely impacted by environmental issues—including the Saudi Arabian deserts, Greenland's glaciers, the Amazon rainforest, the Senegalese coastline, and Chile's Atacama Desert. Running for four seasons from its inaugural 2021 campaign to its finale in 2024, Extreme E was officially succeeded by the hydrogen-powered Extreme H championship from 2025 onwards.

Race Car Specifications
Extreme E utilized the Odyssey 21, a standardized spec race car manufactured by Spark Racing Technology, powered by Williams Advanced Engineering battery packs and shod with Continental tyres. Delivering a maximum output of 400 kW (approximately 550 hp), the machine completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds and is capable of scaling gradients of up to 58.5 degrees (a 130% incline). Underpinned by a niobium-reinforced tubular steel alloy chassis integrated with a roll cage and crash-absorption structure, the vehicle carries a kerb weight of around 1,650 kg and an overall width of 2,300 mm. Its bespoke tyres were engineered for extreme winter and summer conditions, performing across both ice/snow and desert terrain. While teams were allowed to custom-design body panels, light clusters, and bumpers, all other core components remained strictly control-spec.

Race Format and Structure
The sporting format of Extreme E diverged fundamentally from conventional rallying, adopting a short-course, multi-lap sprint format across extreme natural terrain, with circuits typically measuring around 7 km in length. Race weekends ran a knockout progression comprising qualifying rounds, semi-finals, and finals. Its hallmark sporting regulation was a pioneering gender-equal line-up: each team fielded one male and one female driver with a mandatory mid-race driver changeover—a first in international motorsport. Driver swap strategy proved decisive to race outcomes, requiring teams to strike a precise balance between pit transition time and track position.

Participating Teams and Drivers
From its inception, Extreme E attracted high-calibre motorsport figures as team owners, including Lewis Hamilton's Team X44, Nico Rosberg's Rosberg X Racing (RXR), Jenson Button's JBXE, and the ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team founded by two-time WRC champion Carlos Sainz. The driver roster featured world-class talent across WRC, the Dakar Rally, and Rallycross, including Mattias Ekström, Johan Kristoffersson, Molly Taylor, and Laia Sanz.

Series Conclusion and Extreme H
Extreme E was officially phased out after the 2024 season, as championship organisers shifted their entire focus to the hydrogen-powered Extreme H series. Extreme E utilities manager Andy Welch confirmed the decision at the Autosport International show in January 2024: "Extreme E will finish at the end of 2024. It is different cars, a different championship, the same format. Extreme E will stop." In October 2025, Extreme E held a farewell event titled "The Final Lap" in Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia, featuring returning iconic outfits like the ACCIONA SAINZ QEV XE TEAM to conclude this four-year electric off-road chapter. Stepping in as its direct successor, Extreme H launched in 2025 and secured full FIA World Championship status for 2026, becoming the world's first hydrogen-powered motorsport world championship.
