The Essen Motor Show is Europe's largest and longest-running automotive tuning event, recognized alongside the SEMA Show and Tokyo Auto Salon as one of the "World's Top Three Tuning Car Shows". Its uniqueness lies in its dual nature bridging B2B trade and B2C automotive culture—serving as both the primary annual sourcing and trendsetting platform for the European tuning industry, and a massive "car enthusiast festival" for hundreds of thousands of petrolheads.
Founded in 1968 as the "International Sport and Racing Car Show" by then 25-year-old car enthusiast Wolfgang Schöller, the inaugural event drew 57,000 visitors despite spanning just 7,000 square metres. The exhibition progressively expanded over the years, introducing a motorcycle section in 1978 before officially adopting the name "Essen Motor Show" in 1996. After more than five decades of development, the 2024 edition covered an area of 115,000 square metres, drawing 513 exhibitors and approximately 337,600 visitors.
Unlike SEMA's purely B2B trade focus, the Essen Motor Show operates as a hybrid B2B+B2C event: opening day is a dedicated trade buyer day, where roughly 40% of attendees are trade buyers, 85% of whom hold procurement and agency decision-making authority. Simultaneously, the show welcomes the general public, drawing European car enthusiasts in droves with live vehicle demos, drifting showcases, and motorsport exhibits that deliver a rich enthusiast culture.
The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place from 27 November (Preview Day) to 6 December at the Essen Exhibition Centre (Messe Essen) across a 10-day run. Covering an estimated 104,000 square metres, the event is set to host between 550 and 650 exhibitors, with visitor turnout expected to cross the 350,000 mark.
Four key theme zones form the core layout of the show:
Performance & Racing: Located in Hall 3, focusing on powertrain upgrades, turbochargers, intake and exhaust systems, and racing technologies
Tuning & Lifestyle: Halls 5, 6, and 7, covering sports rims, suspension components, bodykits, and bespoke interior customization
Motorsport: Hall 8, featuring race team showcases and competition equipment
Classic Cars: Halls 1 and 2, dedicated spaces for youngtimers and vintage classics
The return of major carmakers is a headline feature of this edition. SKODA, Volkswagen, Kumho Tire, and Toyo Tires have confirmed their return to Essen, with Volkswagen slated to unveil brand-new debuts in the electric mobility sector. BRABUS will showcase its flagship supercar "Bodo" at the Continental booth, marking the model's official premiere in Essen.
The WORLD WHEEL AWARD enters its ninth edition, with shortlisted sports rims battling it out on the show floor ahead of the final showdown in February 2027. Mercedes-FanWorld returns with a curated lineup of Mercedes-Benz models, serving as a must-visit staple for brand enthusiasts.
The event also features the tuningXperience zone, presenting around 100 private custom builds, alongside high-octane live action at the Event Arena, including the WS Racing "Girls Only" team showcase, Supra GT4 drifting displays, the Mustang GTD debut, and live track battles from German Time Attack and Tuning Masters.
For 2026, standard day tickets (entry after 2:00 PM, Monday to Friday) are priced at 20 EUR online and 25 EUR at the gate; weekend and full-day tickets range between 25 and 39 EUR. Preview Day (27 November) tickets are priced at 32 EUR. Children under 6 enter for free, while children aged 6 to 16 and students enjoy concession rates with valid ID. Starting from 2026, on-site ticket counters will strictly accept cashless/card payments only, with no cash accepted.
For Chinese aftermarket and tuning companies, the Essen Motor Show represents a crucial gateway into the European market. The European tuning market is substantial, with Germany's domestic sector alone valued at 2.5 billion EUR, accompanied by stringent TÜV certification standards, high product quality demands, and localized technical support requirements. Chinese manufacturers hold a distinct cost-performance edge across bodykits, sports rims and tyres, chassis parts, and electronic tuning modules, while EV tuning upgrades stand out as an emerging high-growth segment.
