2026-10-11 06:50:00

Model Overview

The Daihatsu Tanto is a Kei car (K-Car) tailored for Japanese families, first introduced in 2003 by Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd.Derived from the Italian word for "much" or "plenty", the Tanto nameplate signifies how the vehicle delivers an exceptionally spacious cabin within compact dimensions. The Tanto pioneered the "Super Height Wagon" segment with an overall height exceeding 1,700 mm, establishing itself as a benchmark in the Japanese Kei car market courtesy of its dual power sliding doors, B-pillarless design, and class-leading packaging efficiency. As of 2026, the Tanto is in its fourth generation, offered across three core model lines: the standard Tanto, the sporty Tanto Custom, and the crossover-inspired Tanto FunCross.Pricing-wise, the standard model starts from 1,639,000 yen, the Tanto Custom starts from 1,892,000 yen, and the Tanto FunCross begins at 1,831,500 yen (all prices inclusive of tax).

Design Language

In terms of exterior styling, the Tanto adopts a boxy, high-roof wagon silhouette, standing over 1,700 mm tall while strictly complying with Japan's Kei car dimensional limits (overall length of 3,395 mm and overall width of 1,475 mm).The fourth-generation model features a redesigned front grille and body flanks for a bolder, more assertive road presence, accented by chrome trim and crystal-clear LED tail lights for a sleek, contemporary touch. The Tanto Custom further enhances its upmarket appeal through a dedicated aero bodykit, a rear spoiler, and chrome alloy wheels.Introduced in 2022, the Tanto FunCross sports an SUV-style crossover package, incorporating rugged black plastic cladding on the front and rear bumpers and side skirts, complemented by a silver front skid plate garnish.A wide palette of two-tone exterior colour combinations is also available.

Inside, the fourth-generation Tanto offers a variety of cabin themes. The standard version focuses on practical utility, whereas the Tanto Custom features an all-black interior accented with chrome details and gloss black trim inserts.Daihatsu also offers an optional white-themed accessory package encompassing white bonnet garnishes, white interior trim panels, a white leather steering wheel cover, and premium seat covers, creating a bright and airy upmarket cabin ambiance.

Powertrain Performance

The Tanto range is powered by a Kei car-compliant 658 cc inline three-cylinder DOHC petrol engine, available in naturally aspirated (NA) and turbocharged guises. The naturally aspirated unit produces a maximum power of 52 PS (38 kW), while the turbocharged engine delivers 64 PS (47 kW).On the fourth-generation model, the naturally aspirated powerplant does away with the DVVT continuous variable valve timing system in favour of a multi-spark ignition setup and atomised swirl fuel injection, effectively boosting combustion efficiency.Power is routed through Daihatsu's proprietary D-CVT (Dual Mode-CVT), which integrates chain-drive and gear-drive mechanisms to ensure smooth and responsive power delivery during both low-speed acceleration and high-speed cruising.Drivetrain options include front-wheel drive (FF) and four-wheel drive (4WD).Fuel economy is rated at approximately 4.0 to 5.0 litres per 100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The fourth-generation Tanto is the first model built on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform.Compared to predecessor platforms, the DNGA architecture increases bending rigidity by around 30% and achieves approximately 40% weight reduction in the bodyshell through extensive use of high-tensile steel, simultaneously improving crash safety and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) suppression. The suspension setup consists of front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam. Thanks to DNGA's high-rigidity structure and lightweight construction, the Tanto delivers substantial improvements in high-speed stability and ride comfort over previous generations.

Cabin and Features

Packaging and convenience lie at the core of the Tanto's interior design. Even from the first generation, it boasted an interior length of 2,000 mm, an interior height of 1,330 mm, and a fully flat floor. The second-generation model (2007) introduced the revolutionary "Miracle Open Door " concept to the Kei car segment, integrating the front passenger-side B-pillar directly into the door structure to achieve an ultra-wide side aperture in tandem with the sliding door. The fourth-generation model further evolves this with the "Miracle Walkthrough Package", extending the driver's seat sliding range to 540 mm and offering a 30-degree swivel front passenger seat for effortless cabin walk-through and ingress/egress.With both the front passenger door and rear sliding door fully open, the pillarless side opening spans an impressive 1,490 mm.

In terms of comfort and convenience features, the Tanto is equipped with dual power sliding doors (supporting touchless reservation open, welcome auto-open, and anti-pinch functions), rear seat folding tray tables, water-repellent/stain-resistant fabric upholstery, and an automatic retractable boarding step.Higher-spec variants are treated to a large central touchscreen infotainment display alongside a slim, wide-format digital instrument cluster.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

The entire Tanto lineup comes standard with Daihatsu's Smart Assist suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).Utilising stereo cameras and sensors, the system provides a comprehensive array of active safety features: autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, auto high beam, traffic sign recognition, pedal misoperation control, and lead vehicle departure alert.Higher-spec models are upgraded with Smart Assist+, which adds full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Control (LKC), smart parking assist, and a 360-degree panoramic view monitor.Following a product update in 2020, the Smart Assist system was enhanced with night-time pedestrian detection.Selected variants also feature perimeter parking sensors, further bolstering safety when navigating tight urban streets and parking.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its inception, the Tanto has consistently been one of Daihatsu's perennial best-sellers.In April 2014, the Tanto topped Japan's overall monthly new car sales charts for the first time with 19,390 units delivered.Following the launch of the fourth-generation model in July 2019, it racked up 37,000 bookings in its first month alone. In terms of customer demographics, female buyers account for as much as 67%, making it one of the premier daily runabouts among female drivers in Japan.

However, in late 2023, Daihatsu was embroiled in safety certification testing irregularities, forcing the Tanto into a temporary production halt. Consequently, 2024 sales plunged 41.2% year-on-year to 93,759 units, sliding from third to seventh place in the overall Kei car sales rankings. In July 2025, Daihatsu introduced the Tanto Limited special edition series, standardising popular options such as dual power sliding doors and full-speed ACC for a modest price increment of just 22,000 yen over the standard trim, aiming to revitalise market demand through high value-for-money.As of September 2025, the Tanto range is priced between 1,639,000 and 2,106,500 yen.Additionally, the Tanto's badge-engineered twin, the second-generation Subaru Chiffon, is manufactured and sold on the same platform.
