David Brown is a small-batch handmade car manufacturer headquartered in Silverstone, UK, known for combining classic British design elements with modern engineering technology to create highly personalized limited-edition custom models. The brand was founded by entrepreneur David Brown in 2013 with the same name, and has no connection with Sir David Brown, the industrialist who once owned Aston Martin; the two share only a coincidental same name.David Brown Automotive's brand positioning is a 'custom coachbuilder of the 21st century', committed to restoring classic British sports cars and vintage city vehicles for customers through the combination of advanced engineering technology and traditional handicraft. Its core product lines include the Speedback GT, paying homage to 1960s GT sports cars, and the Mini Remastered series, reshaped based on the classic Mini. The brand launched its first all-electric model, Mini eMastered, in 2023, marking the official launch of its electrification strategy. The brand's product pricing is expensive, with starting prices typically ranging from £90,000 to £620,000, positioned as an exclusive luxury item for top collectors and car enthusiasts worldwide.
David Brown was founded by British entrepreneur David Brown in 2013 in Coventry. David Brown himself has a rich entrepreneurial background in the engineering and manufacturing industries, having founded more than 30 companies covering multiple fields such as craft beer and tile manufacturing. After the company was established, it entrusted former Land Rover chief designer Alan Mobberley to lead the design, taking 18 months to create the first concept model, the Speedback GT.In March 2014, the Speedback GT was officially released at the Top Marques exhibition in Monaco and landed at the Geneva Motor Show in the same year, starting the brand's history.
Since its establishment, the company has experienced a steady growth process. As of 2018, it has cooperated with over 70 UK-based suppliers, employed more than 40 staff, and has a customer base of car owners in 17 countries worldwide. In April 2017, the company moved to its new R&D and manufacturing headquarters—a dedicated factory occupying 18,000 square feet within Silverstone Park, and launched its second product, Mini Remastered, in the same year.In July 2020, the company underwent significant equity changes. UK Advanced Industrials Ltd (UKAI) acquired the majority equity of David Brown Automotive, and founder David Brown remained as a director and brand ambassador. With the support of the new owners, the company opened a brand flagship showroom in St John's Wood, London in 2021.In September 2023, the brand entered the zero-emission field and released its first all-electric model, Mini eMastered.
David Brown Automotive's product line is built around the two core principles of 'vintage handmade manufacturing' and 'highly personalized', and is currently mainly divided into three car series.
Speedback GT
As the brand's inaugural work, Speedback GT is positioned as a modern luxury GT sports car. Its exterior design draws heavily on classic elements of British sports cars from the 1960s, such as the Aston Martin DB5 and DB6, while being based on the retired Jaguar XKR architecture, equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine, with initial versions delivering 510 horsepower. The body uses hand-formed aluminum alloy panels, totaling 142 independent aluminum panels, with a full vehicle handmade production cycle lasting up to 8,000 hours.
Speedback Silverstone Edition
This is the ultimate limited performance version of Speedback GT, limited to only 10 units worldwide.Equipped with an improved 5.0-liter V8 twin-scroll supercharged engine, maximum power increased to 601 horsepower, driving the rear wheels via a 6-speed ZF semi-automatic transmission, with 0-60 mph acceleration time shortened to 4.2 seconds. This version incorporates a large number of detailed elements paying homage to the aviation and racing history of Silverstone Circuit in terms of appearance and interior.
Mini Remastered
A retro city vehicle reshaped based on the classic Mini Mark II 1275 cc body. The brand uses modern craftsmanship to replace the original Mini's outdated machinery with more reliable modern parts, while retaining its iconic compact dimensions and lightweight body. This series includes multiple sub-versions: the standard version is equipped with a 1330cc four-cylinder engine, outputting about 94 horsepower; the Oselli 60th Anniversary Edition is limited to 60 units globally, equipped with a 1450cc high-performance engine tuned by Oselli Engineering, delivering 125 horsepower, with 0-62 mph acceleration in 7.8 seconds.
Mini eMastered
The brand's first all-electric model launched in 2023. It adopts a zero-emission powertrain, equipped with a Zonic 70 motor, delivering 72 kW (approx. 97 horsepower) and 175 Nm torque, paired with an 18.8 kWh high-voltage battery, providing a WLTP range of approximately 177 kilometers.
David Brown's market performance is characterized by scarcity and high unit price. The company operates following a strict quantity control principle and has announced that the total production of Speedback GT will not exceed 100 units. As a brand following a low-volume handmade custom business model, the number of David Brown Automotive vehicles registered on UK roads is maintained annually within the range of 46 to 91 units, with 46 new registrations in 2025.After undergoing equity restructuring and strategic adjustments in 2020, the company is accelerating the expansion of its global sales and service network to explore potential customer groups in the high-end custom car market.
Traditional Handmade Aluminum Body Craftsmanship
David Brown's core technology capability is reflected in its modern mastery of traditional body manufacturing. Each Speedback GT is hand-finished from a total of 142 aluminum panels and undergoes 8 weeks of hand spraying and fine polishing. This process route can not only shape a retro profile with strong visual tension but also meet modern industrial standards in weight control and body rigidity.
Platform and Powertrain
The technical basis of Speedback GT originates from the Jaguar XKR, adopting its mature unibody chassis, suspension structure, and large-displacement supercharged powertrain. The first mass-produced vehicle is equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine, with a maximum output of 510 horsepower and 625 Nm torque, with 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.8 seconds. The Speedback Silverstone Edition launched in 2022 increased power to 601 horsepower and 625 Nm, with 0-60 mph acceleration time improved to 4.2 seconds, reflecting the brand's continuous investment in engineering evolution.
Restomod Electrification Retrofit
In the field of all-electric vehicles, the company launched the Mini eMastered in 2023, creating a new branch of its classic car electrification. The core technology lies in using an electrification retrofit kit provided by the Australian-British company Felten to convert the retro Mini shell to an electric drive layout without destroying the original body structure or needing to drill any new holes, fully retaining the original factory chassis and suspension specifications, ensuring the vehicle can retain its original identification number and be legally driven on the road. The vehicle's curb weight is only 640 kg, almost level with the original fuel Mini.
David Brown's headquarters and production base are both located in Silverstone, UK, while also building an authorized sales and service network in major global luxury car consumption markets. On the European continent, the brand opened its first overseas showroom at Classic Remise in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2016, and in 2019 designated dealer M.A.S. Style located in Wuppertal as the official distributor for the German market. In the North American market, the brand officially designated Bespoke Imports Group LLC located in Naples, Florida as the official partner and importer for the US and Canada in early 2022.In terms of the UK, besides the Silverstone headquarters, the brand opened an urban flagship showroom with display and configuration functions in St John's Wood, London in 2021.In addition, the brand also covers the Japanese, Hong Kong China, and Southeast Asian markets through its directly managed sales representative network.
With the injection of new shareholder UKAI in 2020 and the appointment of new CEO Eddie Kembery, David Brown is promoting the development plan of 'product diversification and new model launch'.Future core strategies include: First, continue to deepen the dual-line product layout of high-end custom GT models and Restomod classic cars, relying on the strong supply chain manufacturing capabilities and luxury brand management experience of UKAI's parent company, planning to launch a new series of derivative models.Second, comprehensively promote electrification transformation, starting with the Mini eMastered, the future will explore expanding this electric drive customization solution to more classic models, while meeting the 'gas-to-electric' conversion needs of existing fuel version customers.Third, continue to expand the global high-end retailer network, and strengthen coverage of the rapidly growing ultra-luxury custom car markets in Asia, the Middle East, and North America, to promote the continuous growth of brand sales volume and global influence.
