2026-10-07 20:10:00

Model Overview

The Chery O5 is the export market moniker for the OMODA 5, the debut model from Chery Automobile's global sub-brand, OMODA. The OMODA 5 first made its global debut in the Chinese domestic market in 2022 under the Chinese name "Omoda". In 2025, Chery introduced a facelift for the OMODA 5 in markets including Malaysia, rebranding it as the Chery O5 to better unify its global brand identity.

Positioned as a B-segment compact crossover SUV, the model targets global Gen-Z urbanites, marketed around the ethos of a "new-generation hardcore trendy sports SUV" or a "global lifestyle product". As of June 2026, the Chery O5 is marketed across 38 countries worldwide, including Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Poland, and Mexico. Between January and August 2025, cumulative global sales of the model reached 44,769 units.

⚠️ Important Note: The Chery O5 is currently exclusive to export markets and is not sold in mainland China under this name. The "Omoda" familiar to Chinese domestic consumers represents the local-market equivalent of this vehicle.

Design Language

The Chery O5 has seen several styling iterations. The 2025 facelift model features a Pixel Diamond geometric front grille paired with an X-style front bumper, complemented by arrow-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and sequential turn indicators. At the 2026 Bangkok Motor Show, Chery revealed a second facelift featuring a closed-off front fascia alongside slimmer, sharper headlamps, an aesthetic officially termed the  "Robo Shark" design language. Round the back, the full-width taillight cluster gains a new lightning-motif internal graphic, while the redesigned tailgate and rear bumper see the registration number plate relocated lower down onto the bumper.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the initial iteration measures 4,400 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,585 mm in height, riding on a 2,630 mm wheelbase. The 2025 facelift rides on 18-inch gloss black sports alloy wheels, omitting the previous red exterior and wheel accents for a cleaner, more cohesive aesthetic.

Inside, the 2025 model comes standard with dual 10.25-inch digital instrument and infotainment displays. Following the second facelift in 2026, the cabin layout was revamped with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, alongside a new twin-spoke steering wheel and an integrated armrest design on the centre console.

Powertrain & Performance

The Chery O5 is available with two powertrain options: petrol and fully electric.

The petrol variant is driven by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, outputting a maximum of 156 PS and 230 Nm of torque. For the 2025 facelift, the gearbox was upgraded from a CVT to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (6DCT) , delivering crisper gear shifts and greater torque handling capacity. The drive mode selector expands from two to three drive modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport.

The all-electric variant (badged as the Omoda E5 in selected markets) features a front-mounted single electric motor delivering 211 PS and 288 Nm. The century sprint from 0-100 km/h is dispatched in 7.2 seconds, on to a top speed of 171 km/h. Power comes from a 50.6 kWh battery pack, yielding an NEDC-rated range of 422 km. On the charging front, DC fast charging is supported up to 110 kW, while AC charging is rated at 6.6 kW.

Chassis & Handling

The chassis represents one of the pivotal enhancements in the 2025 facelift. The rear suspension setup has been upgraded from a torsion beam to a multi-link independent rear suspension (Multi-Link) , making the Chery O5 the only vehicle in its segment to feature a multi-link rear setup. This mechanical upgrade markedly enhances ride comfort, handling stability, and cornering composure. The suspension geometry and damping have been tuned to strike a balanced compromise between pliancy and handling dynamism.

In terms of drivetrain configuration, both the petrol and all-electric models utilise a front-engine/motor, front-wheel drive (FWD) layout.

Cabin & Equipment

On the smart cockpit front, the 2025 Chery O5 features standard dual 10.25-inch screens with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Range-topping trims add 64-colour dynamic ambient lighting. Following the 2026 second facelift, the central touchscreen was enlarged to 15.6 inches.

For passenger comfort, the 2025 update introduces ventilated front seats (for both driver and front passenger), a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat and 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and a front centre armrest with a cooled storage compartment. In-car entertainment is handled by an 8-speaker SONY sound system. Additional amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air-conditioning vents, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system. Selected export markets also benefit from acoustic double-glazed front side glass and a driver's seat massage function.

Safety & Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the Chery O5 is comprehensively fitted with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite packing up to 19 active safety functions . This incorporates Level 2 autonomous driving features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) . A 540-degree panoramic camera system (complete with a transparent chassis display) is also equipped.

Passive safety provisions include multiple airbags and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The body structure utilises a high proportion of high-strength steel, delivering solid crash test protection.

Market Performance & Reception

The Chery O5 (OMODA 5) has logged strong sales traction globally. Since 2023, over 13,000 units have been delivered in Malaysia alone. Between January and August 2025, global sales of the model hit 44,769 units. Over the same period, Chery Group recorded total global sales of 1,727,299 units (up 14.5% year-on-year), with export markets absorbing 798,804 units (a 10.8% YoY gain), securing Chery's position as China's leading automotive exporter.

In July 2025, the OMODA 5 was awarded the "Best Value New Car" title at the 2025 Autotrader Awards.

In Malaysia, the official retail price for the 2025 facelift Chery O5 is RM116,800 (approx. RMB 180,000). It is backed by a standard 7-year/150,000 km warranty, with early-bird customers entitled to an extended 10-year/1,000,000 km engine warranty package. In Thailand, the pure electric variant is priced between THB 700,000 and THB 790,000 (approx. RMB 140,000 to RMB 160,000).

Automotive industry consensus attributes the Chery O5's competitive edge to its class-exclusive multi-link independent rear suspension, generous ADAS active safety suite, and exceptionally sharp pricing strategy. Serving as a cornerstone of Chery's international expansion, the Chery O5 has established a distinctive niche in the global compact crossover segment through its youth-oriented design ethos, capable underpinnings, and extensive technology packaging.
