Chenglong is a core truck brand under Dongfeng Motor Group, belonging to Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as "Dongfeng Liuzhou"). The brand was officially established in 1991 and is now responsible for R&D, manufacturing, and sales by Dongfeng Liuzhou. The predecessor of the Chenglong brand was the first cab-over truck successfully developed in China in 1991—at the time, it was temporarily named "Baoma" and later officially named "Chenglong."
Chenglong is an important part of the independent brand system of Dongfeng Motor Group. Its products cover tractor units, cargo trucks, construction vehicles, light trucks, and special purpose vehicles, spanning all series of commercial vehicles. Its main series include H7, H5, T7, M3, L3, and other key models, widely used in long-distance trunk logistics, port transportation, urban distribution, engineering construction, and other commercial vehicle scenarios. Relying on core advantages such as 6,300-ton press stamping forming chassis technology, "Dragon Bone" frame structure cab technology, lightweight material design, and efficient powertrain matching, Chenglong has formed product characteristics of high strength and high durability, identified by the "Dragon's Backbone."
The design concept of the brand logo is rooted in the traditional Chinese cultural symbol of the "Dragon," outlining the image of the dragon with simple yet powerful lines. It not only echoes the brand name "Chenglong" but also conveys the brand spirit of reliability, resilience, and upward progress.
The growth trajectory of the Chenglong brand can be summarized as a rugged yet courageous path from a local agricultural machinery factory to a world-class commercial vehicle enterprise.
Startup and Exploration Period (1954–1990) : The production subject of Chenglong—Dongfeng Liuzhou's predecessor—earliest traces back to the Liuzhou Agricultural Machinery Factory established in 1954. In 1969, Guangxi urgently needed to develop the automotive industry. Liuzhou Agriculture workers used a 300-ton pressure machine and driving energy like a bugle horn to successfully develop Guangxi's first cargo truck, the "Feiyue" brand. Thereafter, Liuzhou Agriculture also pioneered China's first 5-ton medium-duty diesel cargo truck, and passed appraisal in 1981, entering batch production. Thus, the reputation of "Diesel Dongfeng, Authentic Liuzhou Automobile" spread in society. In 1981, Liuzhou Automobile officially joined the Dongfeng Automotive Industry Joint Operation Company, entering the "Dongfeng" system.
Brand Launch and Scale-up (1991–2014) : In 1991, Dongfeng Liuzhou successfully developed China's first cab-over truck, named "Chenglong", thus the brand was born. In the same year, both the company and brand achieved new records of 10,000 units in production and sales, forming a product pattern of "Dual Excellence in One Enterprise: Chenglong Dongfeng, Mid-size and Light Trucks Advancing Together, Competing for Development". In this phase, mid-size truck products became a stable cornerstone, laying a solid foundation of experience and user reputation for heavy-duty truck platform development.
