Car Wash Bay

2026-10-15 22:20:00

Overview

A car wash bay is an enclosed or semi-enclosed commercial premises dedicated to vehicle cleaning and maintenance operations, serving as a fundamental link in the automotive aftermarket service chain. According to the "Operational Guidelines for Intelligent Passenger Car Wash Facilities" published by the China Chain Store & Franchise Association, an intelligent car wash facility is defined as a "commercial premises that utilises smart car wash equipment as a service tool to provide vehicle cleaning services to users". The core function of a car wash bay is to carry out exterior rinsing, cleaning, and detailing in a controlled environment via manual labour or automated machinery. As of June 2024, the nationwide vehicle parc exceeded 345 million units, providing steady market demand for car wash bays.

Structure and Composition

The physical setup of a standard car wash bay comprises three key levels: the premises, equipment, and auxiliary systems. Under the "Operational Guidelines for Intelligent Passenger Car Wash Facilities" group standard, an intelligent car wash facility consists of an intelligent payment system, a wash operation control system, wash bays and eco-treatment systems, and an environmental monitoring system.

The site area includes a vehicle entry guidance zone, a washing bay, and a staging area. Entry and exit points must be fitted with clearly visible warning signs, speed humps, and other safety fixtures to ensure safe vehicle movement.

The equipment section forms the core of the car wash bay, comprising high-pressure water pumps and jetting systems, brush systems (bristle or soft-cloth brushes), blowers/dryers, computerised control units, and wastewater treatment systems.

Auxiliary systems include an efficient drainage network (trenches, drainage pipes, and three-stage sedimentation pits), water recycling units, and surveillance systems. Case studies demonstrate that facilities using "flocculation sedimentation + multi-stage filtration + photocatalytic treatment" water recycling technology can reclaim and reuse up to 80% of car wash wastewater.

Main Classifications

Car wash bays are primarily categorised by service format and machinery type.

By service format:

  • Manual Wash Bays: Washed manually by car wash attendants, making them ideal for detailed cleaning and interior detailing.

  • Self-Service Wash Bays: Equipped with self-service machines operated via QR code payment, allowing vehicle owners to wash their vehicles with precise water metering. These setups typically include vacuuming, sanitisation, and spray coating functions.

  • Fully Automated Wash Bays: Driven by microcomputer-controlled high-efficiency systems, allowing drivers to complete the entire wash cycle without stepping out of their cars.

By machine operating type:

  • Tunnel (Conveyor) Type: The wash machinery remains stationary while vehicles are pulled slowly through the wash tunnel on a conveyor belt, ideal for high-throughput, continuous washing.

  • Gantry / Rollover Type : The vehicle remains parked while the gantry unit moves back and forth along guide rails to complete the wash cycle, suited for space-constrained premises.

Fully Automatic Car Wash Process

Taking a fully automated computerised car wash machine as an example, a standard wash cycle typically involves the following steps:

  1. Vehicle Guidance: Audio prompts or digital displays guide the vehicle into position and prompt essential preparations, such as winding up windows and retracting aerials.

  2. Pre-Wash Rinse: The vehicle receives an initial rinse with clean or reclaimed water to strip away loose grit, mud, and surface grime.

  3. Brush Washing: Utilising a water recycling system, the bodywork is washed using dedicated ultra-soft bristles or foam brushes. Testing indicates that after 50 automated wash cycles, clearcoat paint wear is under 0.0003 mm, compared to over 0.0010 mm from manual washing.

  4. Pre-Dry Rinse: A thorough rinse before drying to ensure no chemical or dirt residue remains.

  5. Wax Application: Gloss wax is sprayed to enhance the shine and protection of the paintwork.

  6. High-Velocity Air Drying: Powerful blowers expel water droplets trapped in panel gaps and recesses, helping safeguard internal vehicle components.

Environmental and Regulatory Standards

Because car wash operations consume significant water and discharge effluent, environmental compliance is strictly regulated. Key requirements include:

  • Wastewater Treatment: Effluent must be treated to comply with discharge standards. Wash machines must feature robust wastewater processing capabilities and integrate treatment facilities such as three-stage sedimentation pits.

  • Water Quality Standards: Fresh, reclaimed, and recycled water used in washing must comply with national environmental standards.

  • Noise Control: Operating noise levels must not exceed statutory environmental limits.

In terms of site selection, different types of car wash facilities have specific location criteria: large car wash centres (washing over 500 vehicles daily) should ideally be sited on urban peripheries or near highway service areas; small car wash bays (washing under 200 vehicles daily) are best suited for non-arterial roads with access to municipal sewage infrastructure.

Safety and Maintenance

Fully automated car wash systems require comprehensive safety safeguards:

  • Electrical Safety: Equipment must carry national 3C safety certification, be fitted with earth leakage circuit breakers, and undergo regular electrical safety inspections.

  • Mechanical Safety: Systems must feature pedestrian/vehicle intrusion sensors, emergency stop buttons, vehicle positioning sensors, and intelligent anti-collision functions to prevent accidental damage or injury during operation.

  • Waterproof and Dustproof Protection: Internal electrical circuits must feature robust waterproof and dustproof capabilities.

On the maintenance front, wash equipment requires scheduled servicing and detailed maintenance logs for auditing purposes. Unmanned car wash facilities must also deploy continuous, full-coverage CCTV surveillance with video storage durations conforming to relevant regulatory guidelines.

As of July 2026, the car wash industry continues to pivot towards smart automation, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Transitioning from traditional manual washes to fully automated computerised setups, and from basic cleaning to integrated wash, detailing, and sanitisation services, car wash facilities continue to evolve to cater to the growing demands of the automotive aftermarket.
