CMS

2026-10-24 21:30:00

CMS (Camera Monitor System, also known as electronic wing mirrors or digital side mirrors) is an innovative automotive intelligent vision system that replaces conventional physical glass side mirrors with high-definition (HD) cameras. The system captures real-time HD footage of the vehicle's flanks and rear using miniature wide-angle exterior cameras mounted on both sides, seamlessly feeding the live view to dedicated display screens on the interior A-pillars or door panels. Beyond drastically eliminating traditional blind spots, CMS delivers a clearer, wider field of vision in adverse driving conditions such as night driving, heavy downpours, or harsh glare.

Core Technical Architecture and Operating Principles

The technical architecture of CMS mainly consists of exterior high-definition wide-angle camera modules, interior High Dynamic Range (HDR) display screens, a high-speed Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for image processing, and a low-latency video transmission bus.

High-Definition Image Acquisition & Digital ISP Processing:

Where traditional wing mirrors once sat, sleek, compact waterproof camera units take over. Each camera features a built-in high-performance Image Signal Processor (ISP) capable of adapting on the fly to extreme lighting shifts—such as harsh direct sunlight, low-light night driving, torrential rain, or tunnel entries and exits. By suppressing glare and brightening dark areas, the system streams distortion-free, High Dynamic Range (HDR) digital video in real time.

Ultra-Low Latency Transmission & Dual-Screen Interactive Display:

Captured digital footage is relayed with millisecond-grade, ultra-low latency to OLED or LCD monitors flanking the driver via a dedicated high-speed in-car data bus. Aside from offering a significantly wider perspective than physical glass, the system automatically adjusts the viewing angle—such as automatically tilting downwards in Reverse, adjusting during turns, or overlaying dynamic guiding lines—allowing drivers to gauge clearances and surrounding hazards with precision.

Safety Specifications and Physical Limitations

Never Drive with Severely Mud-Covered, Iced, or Physically Damaged Camera Lenses (Prohibiting Driving When Camera Lenses are Severely Mudded, Iced, or Physically Damaged):

While traditional wing mirrors still offer basic optical visibility even when wet, CMS relies entirely on an active digital video feed. Driving is strictly prohibited if external lenses are heavily coated with thick mud, ice, or road grime, or if cabin displays lose signal due to side-scrapes or internal circuit faults. Camera lenses must be thoroughly cleaned before setting off, and any system fault must be rectified prior to driving.

Never Ignore Blind Spot Risks During Severe Low-Voltage Power Faults or Screen Freezes (Prohibiting Ignoring Vision Loss Risks During Severe Low-Voltage Power Faults or Screen Freezes):

As an active electronic safety and vision system, CMS relies heavily on the vehicle's 12V low-voltage auxiliary battery and domain controllers. Drivers must never attempt high-speed lane changes if the instrument cluster flags a low-voltage electrical warning, or if the cabin displays freeze, glitch, or stutter severely. Motorists must remain vigilant against a complete loss of rearward visibility from sudden power failure and safely pull over immediately to inspect electrical faults when necessary.
