Buses and Coaches

2026-10-21 05:20:00

Buses and coaches (in English: bus or coach) refer to motor vehicles designed to transport passenger groups alongside their personal luggage, typically built with a box-type body and configured with more than 9 seats. Serving as an integral segment of commercial vehicles, they cater extensively to urban public transport, intercity passenger transit, tour sightseeing, and corporate commuting. Under China's automotive vehicle homologation catalogue, buses are designated under product category code "6".

Basic Classifications

Buses are primarily categorised into the following segments based on operational use:

City Bus: Heavy-duty passenger vehicles operating across urban and suburban routes, primarily serving as public transit buses. Alongside passenger seating, the cabin layout incorporates aisles for standing passengers; select models feature double-decker configurations to maximise passenger capacity, albeit with a higher centre of gravity and comparatively lower driving stability.

Highway Coach: Large-scale coaches operating along intercity or inter-township trunk roads, divided into long-distance and short-distance coaches. Long-distance express coaches can cover routes spanning hundreds of kilometres, featuring fully seated layouts and dedicated overhead luggage racks or lower luggage compartments.

Tour Coach: Designed specifically for holiday touring and sightseeing, offering generous seat pitch and panoramic window visibility. These vehicles are standardly equipped with ventilation, heating, and air-conditioning systems, with premium variants further fitted with sleeper berths, onboard restrooms, and other touring amenities.

Passenger Van / Minibus: A light passenger vehicle accommodating no more than 17 occupants, colloquially termed a "van" due to its boxy silhouette, delivering agile manoeuvrability and commendable ride comfort.

Classification by Length

Based on overall vehicle length, buses are conventionally classified into the following segments:

Segment Length Range
Microbus Up to 3.5 metres
Light Bus 3.5 metres to 6 metres
Medium Bus 6 metres to 9 metres
Large Bus 9 metres to 12 metres

Market Overview

In 2025, China's bus and coach production and sales volumes reached 568,000 units and 574,000 units respectively, marking year-on-year gains of 11.8% and 12.3%. Specifically, light buses (3.5–6 metres) recorded sales of 448,000 units—a 14.3% year-on-year increase—anchoring overall industry volume; medium and heavy buses (above 6 metres) registered sales of 126,000 units, representing a 5.9% year-on-year growth.

Industry Trends

The bus sector is experiencing a distinct shift towards downsizing, bespoke customisation, and premiumisation. Driven by rapid high-speed rail expansion and rising private passenger car adoption, conventional intercity coach transport has continued to contract, with nationwide commercial highway passenger volume declining by nearly 70% between 2012 and 2023. In parallel, the surge in "small private tour groups" and integrated urban-rural transit networks has unlocked structural demand for compact passenger vehicles, prompting fleet operators to pivot vehicle procurement from full-sized coaches towards 7-seater, 9-seater, and other compact passenger vans.

On the technology front, the industry is accelerating its transition towards electrification (New Energy Vehicles) and intelligent connectivity. Proceedings from the 2025 Bus Academic Annual Conference highlighted that the sector has moved past extensive volume growth into a new era of high-quality development centred around "value restructuring". Successive trade-in and fleet renewal policies are projected to generate replacement demand for approximately 100,000 public transit buses, catalysing supply-chain-wide technological upgrades and structural optimisation. In terms of overseas markets, vehicle exports have become a vital growth engine, with manufacturers advancing from conventional "product export" models to comprehensive "localised ecosystem deployment".
