Buick Envision S

2026-10-03 17:10:00

The Buick Envision S is a mid-size D-segment SUV under SAIC-GM Buick, slotted between the Envision and Envision Plus, targeting the sporty and youthful demographic. The Envision nameplate was introduced for local assembly/production by SAIC-GM in 2014, with the Envision S officially launched in 2020 as the lineup's sportier derivative. As of June 2026, the latest offering on sale is the 2026 model year facelift, officially rolled out on 29 September 2025. The new car is offered in two variants: the 25T Platinum Edition and the 25T Jinxiang Platinum Edition. It carries an official retail price range of RM196,900 to RM204,900, but adopts a "fixed net price" sales model that brings actual on-the-road prices down to between RM139,900 and RM149,900. Buyers trading in their vehicles are entitled to an RM3,000 brand trade-in rebate, stackable with national subsidies of up to RM15,000. Key rivals to the Envision S include fellow joint-venture mid-size SUVs such as the Volkswagen Tayron and Volkswagen Tiguan L.

Design Language

Visually, the 2026 Envision S continues with Buick's PURE Design philosophy. The front fascia is dominated by a wing-shaped gloss black mesh grille flanking split-type wing LED headlamps—featuring slim, sharp daytime running lights up top and vertically stacked bi-LED projectors below. It also incorporates dynamic sequential welcome lighting upon unlocking the car. The side profile remains the highlight of the silhouette, where short front overhangs and a raked D-pillar deliver an athletic coupe-SUV stance, accented by distinctive Z-shaped dual character lines stretching from the headlights through to the tailgate. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,641 mm long, 1,883 mm wide, and 1,638 mm tall, riding on a 2,779 mm wheelbase. Its minimum turning radius stands at 5.3 metres. Round the back, you will find full-width 3D LED taillights, a roof-mounted ducktail spoiler, and a rear bumper finished with integrated chrome accents. Exterior paint options include Onyx Black, Twilight Grey, Pearl White, and Distant Mountain Green. Inside, the cabin is swathed in soft-touch panelling and leather upholstery, complemented by 121-colour ambient lighting. A new "Danxia Red" interior theme joins the 2026 lineup, featuring premium leather trim with contrast red stitching and stain-resistant treatment on the seat surfaces.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the 2026 Envision S range is powered exclusively by GM's eighth-generation Ecotec 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (code LP5). The mill churns out a maximum power of 155 kW (211 PS) and 270 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 9-speed HYDRA-MATIC torque-converter automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The century sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is dealt with in 8.4 seconds, on to a top speed of 205 km/h. On the WLTC test cycle, combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.87 L/100 km. The entire range comes in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup and is tuned to run on RON 92 petrol.

Chassis & Handling

The chassis setup is among the biggest selling points of the Envision S, featuring front MacPherson struts paired with a rear five-link independent suspension setup across all variants. In the RM150,000 joint-venture SUV segment, a rear multi-link configuration of this caliber is rare, being more commonly found on premium European marques. The lower wishbones are forged from aluminium alloy, reducing unsprung mass to sharpen damper rebound response and elevate ride comfort. Up front, a full-perimeter subframe with hydraulic bushings further improves structural rigidity and suspension mounting stiffness. The ride and handling tune leans towards planted composure, remaining exceptionally stable at high-speed cruising while offering light steering effort and nimble agility around town.

Cabin & Equipment

The cockpit represents the key highlight of the 2026 Envision S update. Standard across the range is an EYEMAX 30-inch curved 6K integrated display that merges the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen into a single seamless panel. The system runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor and benefits from the updated V5.0 operating system. Key software additions include built-in AutoNavi navigation with driving-habit-based route learning and real-time traffic light countdown timers; an advanced AI LLM voice assistant capable of generative capabilities for queries, travel recommendations, and car operation guidance; dedicated scenario presets such as Immersive, Smog Protection, and Sunshade modes; and integrated media streaming including Ximalaya and QQ Music. Gear selection is now operated via a steering column-mounted electronic stalk.

Kit-wise, the entry-level 25T Platinum Edition comes well-specified with core items such as the 30-inch 6K display, V5.0 OS, and front acoustic double-glazed glass. The range-topping 25T Jinxiang Platinum Edition adds the eCruise advanced driver assistance suite, automatic high beam, safety alert vibrating seats, auto-folding side mirrors with lock-fold function, an openable panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, 121-colour ambient lighting, a wireless smartphone charging pad, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, a rear centre armrest with integrated cup holders, and dual-zone climate control. Cargo capacity is rated at 347 litres, expandable to 1,450 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat. The flagship trim also benefits from a 1.2-square-metre dual-pane panoramic glass roof.

Safety & Driver Assistance

For passive safety, high-strength steel accounts for 72% of the Envision S body shell, with 1,500 MPa hot-stamped steel deployed across crucial structural areas like the A- and B-pillars. On the active safety front, all variants get the eCruise driver assistance package incorporating 12 safety features, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). The higher-spec 25T Jinxiang Platinum Edition upgrades this to full Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability. A blind-spot camera system also comes as standard. However, a 360-degree surround-view camera remains noticeably absent on the 2026 Envision S.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Envision S stands as one of Buick's key volume drivers in China. In May 2025, monthly deliveries hit 11,996 units, accounting for 31.52% of Buick's total sales volume for that month, having earlier registered 7,554 units in February 2025. After a modest 464 units in January 2025, sales grew steadily month over month, demonstrating robust market resilience. Besides domestic deliveries, the Envision S also serves as a strategic global model for SAIC-GM and is exported to international markets.

By making the 30-inch 6K curved display, V5.0 infotainment, and 8155 chipset standard across the board—paired with aggressive "fixed net pricing"—the 2026 Buick Envision S preserves a strong competitive position in the RM130,000 to RM150,000 pure-petrol SUV arena. Its standout strengths include striking coupe-SUV styling, a sophisticated rear five-link suspension with aluminium lower arms rarely seen at this price point, a tech-forward smart cockpit, and substantial value for money. On the flip side, rear passenger legroom falls short of more traditional, boxy segment rivals, a 360-degree parking camera is omitted, and it faces fierce headwinds from electrified domestic alternatives (NEVs) in the same price bracket. Taken as a whole, the Envision S relies on its compelling mix of "sporty looks, sorted chassis, and advanced in-car tech" alongside keen pricing to secure a distinctive niche in the joint-venture mid-size SUV segment.
