Baojun (宝骏) is one of SAIC Group's three major independent brands, created by SAIC‑GM‑Wuling on July 18, 2010. The name "Baojun" comes from the literal meaning of "Jun" — a fine horse — and reflects the brand's aspiration to be a "favorite choice for everyone." With "Reliable Partner" as its core philosophy, the brand embodies youth, technology, intelligence, and connectivity. Drawing on GM's global standards, Baojun has built a product lineup that includes sedans, SUVs, MPVs, and new energy vehicles.
Baojun brings together SAIC's strengths in production and capital, GM's expertise in technology and quality management, and Wuling's edge in cost control and market execution. In 2017, the brand hit a historic high of one million annual sales, making it the fastest Chinese car brand to reach that milestone. After 2019, sales began to decline. In recent years, Baojun has pivoted fully toward new energy, establishing a foothold in global markets through exports.
Establishment and Launch (2010–2014)
Baojun's birth was driven by the broader trend of consumer upgrading in China's auto market. In 2009, China became the world's largest automotive market for the first time, and SAIC‑GM‑Wuling urgently needed to shift from commercial vehicles to passenger cars. That need gave rise to Baojun. In August 2011, the brand's first family sedan, the Baojun 630, was launched, marking the beginning of its passenger vehicle journey.
Explosive Growth Period (2015–2017)
Baojun then entered a phase of explosive growth. In July 2014, the seven‑seat family car Baojun 730 was launched, accurately targeting the MPV blue‑ocean market and quickly becoming a phenomenon. In 2015, the compact SUV Baojun 510 arrived on the scene, winning over the market with its striking design and strong cost‑performance ratio. That year, Baojun posted annual sales of 500,000 units. The year 2017 was the brand's absolute peak — cumulative annual sales exceeded 1.004 million units, making Baojun the fastest Chinese brand to reach the one‑million‑unit mark.
Brand Dilemma and Transformation (2018–2023)
In 2018, the market environment changed dramatically, and the domestic auto market experienced negative growth for the first time in 28 years. Baojun's sales fell from one million units to 800,000. In 2019, the brand launched "New Baojun," adopting a new diamond logo and embracing intelligent connectivity, in an attempt to shift from a cost‑performance‑driven brand to a technology‑driven one. However, the high‑end transformation did not meet expectations. From 2017 to 2023, sales plunged to just 33,000 units over six years. In recent years, the brand's momentum has nearly stalled. In March 2026, retail sales of only about 1,669 units highlighted the harsh reality of its restructuring phase in the domestic high‑end market.
Full New Energy Transformation (2020–Present)
Facing the industry's electrification wave, Baojun made new energy transformation its core strategy. In 2020, it launched products such as the E100 and E200 micro electric vehicles (with a range of 305 km) and the KiWi EV. In 2023, it adopted a new logo and fully pivoted to the new energy track. In April 2024, it unveiled the "Tianyu Architecture," the first global electrified and intelligent platform defined by people's needs. In 2025, it deepened its cooperation with Huawei and built a new intelligent product ecosystem centered around a "Three Intelligences" layout.
Over the years, Baojun has launched three main product lines—sedans, SUVs, and MPVs—totaling about 25 models, 21 of which have since been discontinued. Today, only a few new energy models remain on sale, such as the KiWi EV and the Yep.
The brand's sales structure has changed fundamentally. In the early 2020s, Baojun was heavily dependent on the domestic private consumer market. But after 2024, exports have taken an increasingly large share. By 2026, over 80% to 90% of Baojun's monthly wholesale volume was being shipped overseas, while domestic retail sales had become almost negligible.
Among the brand's standout models, the Baojun 730 achieved cumulative sales of more than 900,000 units. The Baojun 510, with its youthful design and strong value for money, quickly became a hit in the compact SUV segment after its launch and won first place in user satisfaction in the 2017 CACSI. The Baojun 530 was gradually phased out as the brand shifted its focus to new energy. The Yep series, launched in 2023, helped pioneer the domestic pure electric box‑style car segment. After a refresh with the 2026 model in May 2025, it has steadily improved its smart cockpit, cabin quietness, and driving range. The Cloud, a compact pure electric model, was well received after its launch in Indonesia.
Baojun's overseas journey dates back to 2011. Through a mix of complete vehicle exports, rebranding under GM‑affiliated brands, and exports under its own name, SAIC‑GM‑Wuling has shipped Baojun models to 104 countries and regions worldwide, with cumulative exports exceeding 620,000 units.
In Indonesia, the Baojun 530 was launched under the Wuling badge at a price of around 170,000 RMB, directly competing with the Honda CR‑V. Within two months of its launch, it had already won the compact SUV market. In India, the Baojun 530 was sold as an SAIC MG brand vehicle, racking up 28,000 orders in just over a month and generating $500 million in intellectual property fees.
The Yep Plus was exported to Central and South American countries such as Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina under the name Chevrolet Spark EUV, and has also reached markets like the UAE. Its overseas price is about 160,000 RMB—double the domestic price—yet demand still outstrips supply. The Cloud (CloudEV) was launched in Indonesia in 2024 and served as the lead vehicle for the VIP fleet at the 10th World Water Resources Forum that same year, showcasing the appeal of Chinese new energy vehicles on the global stage.
Today, Baojun accounts for over 37% of Indonesia's new energy vehicle market—meaning one in every three new energy vehicles there comes from its ecosystem. Together with its parent company, it is pursuing the "Indonesia‑Malaysia‑Thailand Integration" new energy promotion strategy, using Indonesia as a hub to expand into the broader ASEAN market.
Intelligent Island Manufacturing System (I²MS)
The Intelligent Island Manufacturing System is one of Baojun's most remarkable innovations. It integrates digitalization, automation, 5G communication, the industrial internet, and artificial intelligence, deploying 16 modular, flexible "Smart Islands" along with a self‑developed Excellent Operation AI (EOAI) large model that intelligently dispatches over 280 robots on the factory floor. I²MS achieves 98% chassis consistency, part assembly accuracy at the 0.1mm level, and a final assembly automation rate of 50%. It has improved production efficiency by 30% and logistics efficiency by 80%. The system supports co‑production of more than 20 different vehicle models and ensures 100% traceability of product lifecycle data.
Three Intelligences Cooperation System
In 2025, the strategic partnership between SAIC‑GM‑Wuling and Huawei was fully upgraded to the "Three Intelligences" system—assisted driving, intelligent cockpit, and smart manufacturing. The four technical pillars—"Lingmu Assisted Driving," "Lingyu Cockpit," "Lingxi Power," and "Shenlian Battery"—are deeply integrated with Huawei's Kunqun ADAS and Harmony Cockpit. The first co‑developed model, the Baojun Huajing S, comes standard with HUAWEI ADS 4, Harmony Cockpit HarmonySpace 5, and the Kunqun Cloud Car System. The first batch is also equipped with Huawei's cabin laser vision (Limera) and the full‑spectrum anti‑collision system CAS 4.0, and is designed to meet the ultra‑high C‑NCAP 2024 five‑star safety standard, building a comprehensive safety system.
Tianyu Architecture
In April 2024, Baojun launched the Tianyu Architecture—the world's first electrified and intelligent platform defined by the concept of "starting from people's needs." The architecture covers all vehicle categories from A00 to C class, supports multiple powertrain forms and a wide range of use cases, and serves as the technological cornerstone of Baojun's new energy product matrix.
Lingmu Intelligent Driving
In 2025, Baojun introduced the Xiangjing, the first to feature "Lingmu Intelligent Driving 3.0," with an ultra‑low drag coefficient of 0.198 Cd. Lingmu Intelligent Driving works alongside Huawei's systems, serving different product lines with distinct positioning. On the battery front, the Shenlian Battery has protected the battery safety of over three million users. Meanwhile, Baojun has already rolled out mass‑produced models equipped with L2 autonomous driving, representing the brand's phased achievements on the path to accessible intelligent driving. Over the years, Baojun has also received international design awards such as the Good Design Award, reflecting recognition of its styling and human‑machine interaction capabilities by overseas industrial design circles.
The former million‑unit car brand is now making a fresh start with a completely new look. Its sales focus has shifted dramatically—from domestic retail to overseas exports. Its core business has moved entirely from fuel vehicles to new energy, and its technology strategy has evolved from low‑cost, value‑driven competition to smart technology powered by the dual systems of Huawei and Wuling.
The launch of the Baojun Huajing S not only represents the latest iteration of the brand's products and technology but also signals Baojun's attempt to transform from a national commuter brand into a partner in intelligent mobility.
At present, Baojun is navigating a difficult transition period, with domestic retail sales lagging behind the rapid growth of exports. A large number of its traditional fuel models have been discontinued or replaced, while its all‑new new energy products are still in the early stages of scaling up.
Within the broader ecosystem of its parent company, SAIC‑GM‑Wuling—which has cumulatively produced and sold over 31 million vehicles—Baojun will continue to pursue a diversified export strategy, combining complete vehicle exports, rebranding under international brands, and exports under its own name. With the Tianyu Architecture, the Three Intelligences technology system, and the I²MS smart manufacturing platform as its long‑term differentiators, Baojun is seeking to make the leap from quantitative growth to qualitative change in the second‑half race of electrification and intelligence.
