BMW M4

2026-10-08 07:30:00

The BMW M4 is a high-performance sports coupe developed by BMW Group's M division (BMW M GmbH) based on the 4 Series Coupe, standing as a core pillar of the BMW M family. Succeeding the M3 Coupe, the M4 was spun off into an independent model line in 2014, carrying forward the pure driving DNA of the M Power badge. The current model on sale in the domestic market is the 2025 iteration, imported as a fully imported (CBU) unit. On 23 April 2025, the BMW M4 Nürburgring Official Collaboration Limited Edition was officially launched. Based on the M4 Competition, it is strictly limited to 500 units worldwide, each sporting an individually numbered plaque. The official recommended retail price is RM1,088,000. Positioned as a high-performance luxury coupe, the M4 goes up against rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 and Audi RS 5 Coupe.

Design Language

The 2025 BMW M4 Nürburgring Limited Edition incorporates an array of track-honed design elements throughout its exterior. The front fascia is dominated by the signature oversized kidney grille finished in gloss black, featuring laser-etched graphics tracing the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit outline within. Matched with a carbon-fibre front splitter, it delivers supplemental aerodynamic downforce at high speeds. The bonnet is crafted from lightweight carbon fibre, complete with functional cooling vents directly derived from the M4 GT3 race car. The exclusive matte "Nürburgring Silver" paintwork contains ultra-fine metallic flakes, revealing subtle circuit silhouette contours under direct sunlight—a specialised finish requiring a 7-stage paint process. Along the sides, it rides on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear lightweight Y-spoke forged alloy wheels with centre caps bearing the iconic Nürburgring "Nordschleife Clock" crest, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R semi-slick tyres. In terms of dimensions, the coupe measures 4,803 mm long, 1,887 mm wide, and 1,402 mm tall, with a 2,857 mm wheelbase. The rear is dominated by an aggressive carbon-fibre diffuser and a prominent fixed rear spoiler that automatically adjusts its attack angle based on vehicle speed, stepping up downforce above 150 km/h.

Inside, the dashboard is extensively trimmed in premium Alcantara. The passenger-side trim panel is etched with a complete layout of the Nürburgring Nordschleife track, highlighting the notoriously demanding "Karussell S" corner in contrasting red. Up front, the M carbon bucket seats feature a striking dual-tone red-and-black finish with bespoke "Nürburgring" embroidery on the seat surfaces. The three-spoke M sport steering wheel is likewise wrapped in Alcantara, complemented by a red 12 o'clock centre stripe contrasting with metallic paddle shifters, while a titanium limited-edition serial plaque sits prominently on the lower spoke.

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the BMW M4 is BMW M's acclaimed S58 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, engineered with forged pistons and a mono-scroll twin-turbo setup. Extensively tuned for the 2025 Nürburgring Limited Edition, peak output is dialed up to 390 kW (530 PS) and a massive 650 Nm of torque—marking an increase of 30 PS and 50 Nm over the standard M4 Competition. Power is channelled through an 8-speed M Steptronic torque-converter automatic transmission, delivering 15% quicker shift times compared to the standard model. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.5 seconds, with top speed electronically capped at 250 km/h. Its WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 10.1 L/100 km. For reference, the standard rear-wheel-drive M4 Competition outputs 503 PS, while the all-wheel-drive Competition xDrive variant pushes out an additional 20 PS for a total of 523 PS.

Chassis and Handling Dynamics

The BMW M4 rides on a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform. Underpinning the car is a double-joint spring-strut MacPherson front suspension paired with a five-link rear independent setup. The 2025 Nürburgring Limited Edition adopts an adaptive suspension system derived directly from the M4 GT4 race machine, with damper valving fine-tuned across more than 1,000 rigorous laps on the Nordschleife. The carbon-ceramic braking package features massive 400 mm front discs clamped by six-piston calipers, bringing the coupe to a complete halt from 100 km/h in a mere 31 metres. Equipped with the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, drivers can seamlessly toggle between 2WD (pure rear-wheel drive), 4WD, and 4WD Sport modes at the touch of a button. The steering system offers multiple selectable weight and response modes. Thanks to its track-biased chassis configuration, the car clocked a blisteringly quick Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes 25 seconds—shaving 8 seconds off the standard version.

Cockpit and In-Car Tech

Inside the cockpit, the 2025 M4 comes fitted with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster paired with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen display, powered by the latest BMW iDrive 8.5 infotainment operating system. Full support for Apple CarPlay and Baidu CarLife smartphone integration is included. A Head-Up Display (HUD) is standard, featuring a dedicated "Track Mode" that projects real-time performance telemetry including lap times, throttle position, and braking pressure onto the windscreen. Acoustic duties are handled by a premium Harman Kardon surround sound system as standard. The M carbon bucket seats feature 4-way power-adjustable lumbar support and high-density memory foam padding, delivering exceptional lateral bolstering without compromising long-haul touring comfort. Cabin convenience highlights include dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, and engine push-start button.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the M4 comes equipped with 6 airbags as standard. Active safety systems comprise tyre pressure monitoring, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) electronic suites. Standard advanced driver aids include cruise control and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. Buyers can also specify the optional Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and a comprehensive Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, which includes Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Change Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

Market Performance and Verdict

The BMW M4 continues to post formidable sales across the global performance car landscape. In 2025, global deliveries for BMW M high-performance models hit a record 213,457 units, up 3.3% year-on-year to set an all-time annual sales high for the 14th consecutive year. In the Chinese market, BMW M brand sales breached the 10,000-unit milestone for the first time in 2025—soaring 27.9% year-on-year to firmly anchor top spot among Germany's 'Big Three' (BBA) performance sub-brands. M performance models accounted for 9.8% of BMW's total global sales volume. As a quintessential icon of the BMW M Power stable, the M4 retains its benchmark standing in the premium performance coupe segment, courtesy of the potent S58 powerplant, the switchable versatility of the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and the bespoke track pedigree embodied by the Nürburgring Limited Edition.
