BMW 7 Series

2026-10-09 07:20:00

The BMW 7 Series serves as the flagship full-size luxury saloon of the BMW Group. Since the debut of the first-generation E23 in 1977, it has evolved across seven generations, consistently showcasing the pinnacle of the Bavarian brand's technology and design prowess. Currently on sale in the domestic market, the seventh-generation (G70) 7 Series was officially introduced to China in 2022. On 12 November 2025, the 2026 BMW 7 Series was officially launched with a lineup of 6 variants. As an annual model-year update, the 2026 iteration continues on the seventh-generation G70 platform architecture, focusing on offering enhanced specifications without a price hike. Official retail pricing ranges from RM919,000 to RM1,269,000. The lineup offers two powertrain options—735Li and 740Li—available in either Design Pure Excellence (Luxury Package) or M Sport trim packages. Primary rivals include the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Audi A8L.

Design Language

The 2026 BMW 7 Series retains the seventh-generation model’s imposing design cues. Up front, it features a massive vertical-slat kidney grille bordered by an illuminated Iconic Glow contour, projecting an air of modern luxury and high-tech presence. The split-headlight arrangement separates the daytime running lights (DRLs) from the main adaptive LED headlamps, which, along with the broad lower air dam, broadens the front stance. Swarovski crystal elements are integrated into the DRLs, emitting a distinctive shimmering effect when lit to deliver unmistakable day-and-night road presence. The M Sport variant adds aerodynamically sculpted air ducts to the front bumper for a sportier aesthetic. Along the flanks, a full-length shoulder line extends rearwards, alongside the signature Hofmeister kink. Flush-fitted door handles integrate cleanly into the sculpted sheet metal. In terms of dimensions, the saloon measures 5,391 mm long, 1,950 mm wide, and 1,548 mm tall, sitting on a 3,215 mm wheelbase. The rear showcases 3D floating LED taillights, while the M Sport variant gains a rear apron with an integrated diffuser styling. Inside, the 2026 model boasts the BMW Curved Display comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. The illuminated BMW Interaction Bar spans the dashboard, while 5.5-inch touch displays are built into the rear door panels. The top-spec Exclusive variants feature an Alcantara Anthracite headliner as standard. Open-pore wood veneers paired with metallic trims add refined depth and texture to the cabin.

Powertrain and Performance

The entire 2026 BMW 7 Series range is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid setup, paired with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The engine is offered in two states of tune: the 735Li produces 200 kW (272 PS) and 400 Nm of torque, while the 740Li variants pump out 280 kW (381 PS) and 520 Nm. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in as fast as 5.4 seconds, with a rated WLTC combined fuel consumption of around 7.2 L/100 km. In overseas markets, a 760Le xDrive plug-in hybrid model powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 is also offered, producing over 658 PS. The all-electric i7 counterpart is available in xDrive60 (544 PS) and M70 xDrive (659 PS) guises.

Chassis and Handling

The 2026 BMW 7 Series comes standard with adaptive two-axle air suspension across the range. The suspension setup uses a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independent configuration. It is equipped with the Executive Drive Pro active chassis control system, which integrates Dynamic Damper Control and active roll stabilisation to continuously adapt damping rates, keeping body roll to a minimum during aggressive cornering and high-speed cruising. Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steering) comes as standard across the range, turning the rear wheels in tandem with the front wheels at high speeds for added stability, and in the opposite direction at low speeds to cut down the turning circle. In terms of drivetrain, the petrol range runs a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, with the intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system available as an option on selected high-spec variants.

Cabin and Equipment

The interior runs on the BMW Operating System 8.5 (iDrive 8.5). It incorporates BMW's "QuickSelect" zero-layer concept, allowing direct access to essential functions without digging through nested sub-menus. The infotainment suite supports Augmented Reality (AR) navigation, 5G connectivity, Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, and remote app controls. Rear passengers are treated to a 31-inch 8K BMW Theatre Screen supporting an ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio and integrated streaming applications like iQIYI. Rear occupants can also independently control the seats, multi-zone climate settings, and infotainment via the 5.5-inch door-mounted touchscreens. Premium acoustics are handled by a high-end Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System. Upholstered in high-grade leather, the front seats feature multi-programme massage functions, while the rear lounge seats offer multi-way power adjustment with extendable calf rests. Added creature comforts include four-zone automatic climate control, multi-colour ambient lighting, and a heated steering wheel. All 2026 models feature acoustic and thermal laminated glass as standard, further elevating cabin refinement and NVH levels.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The 2026 BMW 7 Series is equipped with Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance as standard. The 740Li Leading variants and above receive the comprehensive Driving Assistant Professional suite as standard. This suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop&Go, Traffic Jam Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). It also features Active Lane Change Assistant with eye-tracking confirmation: between 60 km/h and 180 km/h, the driver can execute an indicated lane change simply by looking into the corresponding side mirror. The sensor suite encompasses over 30 ultrasonic, radar, and long-range sensors, along with 8-megapixel surround cameras. A 360-degree Surround View Camera and AR navigation are standard fitments. Passive safety covers front, side, curtain, and knee airbags. Standard safety features across the range also include a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Auto Brake Hold, and Hill Start Assist.

Market Performance and Reception

The BMW 7 Series maintains a steady foothold in the full-size luxury saloon segment. Throughout 2025, total retail sales of the 7 Series in the Chinese market reached 9,525 units, with cumulative sales from January to October 2025 standing at around 7,291 units. This placed it fourth overall in the 2025 full-size luxury saloon sales rankings. Monthly retail sales reached 1,365 units in December 2025, and 713 units in May 2026. In showrooms, influenced by broader market conditions, transaction prices have seen substantial discounts, with on-the-road prices for base 735Li models sliding to around RM600,000 in certain regions. At the April 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BMW unveiled the Life Cycle Impulse (G70 LCI) facelift, showcasing a revamped cabin influenced by the Neue Klasse design philosophy, slated for a China rollout in 2027. Since its inception in 1977, BMW's flagship saloon has continually defined the segment through forward-thinking technology and driving dynamics, racking up over one million sales worldwide.
