BAIC X35 (previously known as Senbao X35 and BAIC X3 in China) is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive subcompact SUV launched by BAIC Group. The vehicle has undergone multiple brand strategy reorganizations in the Chinese market, shifting focus in the mid-to-late stage to fully concentrate on overseas exports, becoming the main model for BAIC Group to penetrate the global entry-level SUV market segment.

BAIC X35 is positioned as a practical and economical small SUV. The historical significance of this vehicle lies in its role as a witness to the transition of BAIC's independent passenger vehicles from the "Senbao brand" era to the "BAIC" era. Its core selling points focus on mature powertrains, relatively generous vehicle width and wheel track (vehicle width up to 1830 mm), high-rigidity body architecture, as well as large-area panoramic glass roofs and matrix LED headlights, which are relatively rare in this class. The series mainly targets first-time buyers, urban young commuters, and families in developing countries with a rigid demand for high cost-performance ratios.
The birth of BAIC X35 stems from BAIC's early refined layout in the compact and small SUV sectors. The first generation model was unveiled for the first time at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, then belonging to the Senbao sub-brand (Senbao X35). The entire series was equipped with 1.5L naturally aspirated engines, quickly filling the market gap between Senbao X25 and X55 thanks to balanced configurations.
At the 2019 Auto Shanghai, the series underwent a major iteration, with the second-generation model (Senbao Zhida X3) released. The new car introduced a new 'Offspace' family design language and was equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine. As BAIC Group reorganized its independent brands in 2020, the series was officially renamed BAIC X3, while overseas naming was standardized to BAIC X35. Entering the 2025 to 2026 stage, with the Chinese pure fuel small SUV market generally replaced by electric vehicle models, updates to this series gradually stopped domestically, and its lifecycle and production capacity were fully transferred to export sales. In some European and emerging markets (such as Italy, Poland, Iran), locally rebadged versions were derived (such as Italy EVO 5, Iran Tigard X35).
BAIC X35 also presented a typical "reserved domestically, aggressive abroad" development trend. In China, heavily impacted by new energy small cars from BYD, Wuling, etc., the sales share of its fuel version has become marginalized. However, in overseas Middle Eastern (such as Saudi Arabia, UAE), North African, Eastern European, and South American markets, BAIC X35 demonstrated relatively robust sales volume capabilities. As of 2026, its overseas market price range generally remained between 15,000 to 20,000 US dollars (or 55,000 to 68,000 UAE Dirhams). Relying on richer comfort configurations and more spacious cabin space compared to Japanese cars at the same price point, it became the cornerstone model for BAIC International to achieve export growth.
In terms of body dimensions, the second-generation facelifted BAIC X35 has a length, width, and height of 4325 mm, 1830 mm, and 1640 mm respectively (some early entry-level versions have a length of 4286 mm), with a wheelbase of 2570 mm. Among same-class small SUVs, its 1830 mm vehicle width provides better shoulder room.
Regarding powertrain and transmission assembly, overseas current sales series mainly offer the following two pure fuel combinations:
1.5L Naturally Aspirated Version: Equipped with a inline-four-cylinder engine coded A151, maximum power is 85 kW (approximately 116 hp), maximum torque is 148 Nm, mainly matched with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission (4AT).
1.5T Turbocharged Version: Equipped with an inline-four-cylinder turbocharged engine coded A151R2, maximum power output tuned to 100 kW to 110 kW (approximately 136-150 hp), peak torque output reaches 210 Nm. Transmission system matched with 6-speed manual transmission (6MT) or CVT continuously variable transmission capable of simulating smooth gear shifts.
Regarding chassis suspension, the vehicle adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) layout, structure is front MacPherson independent suspension, rear H-type torsion beam non-independent suspension, ground clearance is 180 mm, possessing certain off-road passability. In terms of safety and digitalization, the series is standard equipped with Bosch 9th Gen electronic stability program (ESP), tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), hill start assist (HHC), and 8-inch floating central touchscreen. Higher trims provide 6 airbags, 390L trunk volume, and a panoramic sunroof.
Due to the continued demand for high cost-performance fuel compact SUVs in some overseas economies, BAIC X35 will continue to maintain overseas specific production for the next two to three years. BAIC Group's next steps mainly focus on compliance upgrade for the existing series, including adding active safety software and hardware such as forward collision warning and lane departure assist to meet the latest General Safety Regulation (GSR) for the EU and specific export countries. Additionally, to cope with the increasingly strict global carbon emission situation, BAIC is also evaluating the feasibility of adding a 48V mild hybrid system (MHEV) to the export version of this series, to extend its compliance lifecycle in the international market in a low-cost manner.
