The BAIC D50 (Senbao D50 or BAIC U5 PLUS) is a front-engine front-wheel-drive compact family sedan launched by BAIC Group. This car series is the cornerstone of a long lifecycle traditional sedan in BAIC's independent passenger car camp, currently serving as an entry-level commuter car.

The BAIC D50 is positioned as an economical compact three-box sedan. In BAIC's development architecture, its core historical tag is "An early national sedan integrating SAAB technical genes". Its core selling points focus on a relatively good body width (1820 mm), a relatively soft shock-absorbing chassis, and a high-density equipment layout (such as an integrated dual-screen cockpit, 360-degree panoramic image, and blind spot monitoring system on high trims). The official guide price of this car series has been maintained in the range of 60,000 to 100,000 RMB for a long time, mainly targeting pragmatic salaried families and urban essential ride-hailing groups.
The evolution of BAIC D50 is a microcosm of BAIC passenger car brand integration. The first generation model officially launched at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, then as a strategic Class A sedan for the "Senbao" brand (Senbao D50), built on the SAAB M-trix platform absorbed by BAIC, equipped with a rare rear multi-link independent suspension at the same level, focusing on handling stability.
In November 2017, this car series received a thorough generation upgrade, and the second generation model was launched. The new car gave up the high-cost rear independent suspension, turning towards a torsion beam architecture that pays more attention to maximizing cabin space and economy, and replaced with a brand new family-style large-mouthed front face. After 2020, with BAIC's unified planning of its own brands, the car series was renamed "Beijing U5" and launched its mid-cycle facelift model — Beijing U5 PLUS at Auto Shanghai 2021. At this point, the Chinese market basically completed the transition to the "U5 PLUS", while when facing the Middle East (such as Saudi Arabia, UAE), North Africa and South America and other export markets, this car series still retains and continues to use the "BAIC D50" classic naming that is more recognizable overseas.
BAIC D50 (including U5 PLUS and its pure electric version EU5) shows a differentiated market structure both in China and overseas. In the Chinese market, the pure fuel version D50/U5 PLUS, affected by the fierce competition of large-space plug-in hybrid sedans (such as BYD Qin etc.) at the same price level, its fuel private car retail share has been significantly compressed. However, its derived pure electric version EU5 once occupied an important share in the B-end operational market such as taxis and ride-hailing in many places for a long time. In the overseas market, as of the market feedback in 2026, BAIC D50 maintains a stable sales momentum in the compact car market in the Middle East and South America and other regions, relying on the affordable price of about 50,000 to 60,000 Saudi Riyal (or equivalent UAE Dirham), becoming one of the options for local low-budget consumers to replace traditional Japanese and Korean brands' entry-level sedans.
In terms of body dimensions, the second generation and latest model change series (U5 PLUS architecture) length, width and height are 4660 mm, 1820 mm, 1480 mm respectively (some overseas early versions length is 4630 mm), wheelbase is 2670 mm, curb weight is about 1240 kg to 1255 kg, trunk volume is 405 L to 430 L.
In terms of powertrain and transmission:
Engine technology: Core equipped with a 1.5-liter inline-four naturally aspirated engine (A151A1), featuring Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) and Variable Valve Timing technology. Its maximum power output is 83 kW (about 113 horsepower), maximum torque is 142 Nm to 148 Nm (early on a 150 horsepower 1.5T turbocharged version was briefly provided, later overseas and domestic mainly retained 1.5L power to ensure high economy).
Transmission system: Matched with 5-speed manual transmission (5MT) or CVT continuously variable transmission that can simulate light smooth shifting. Under WLTC / NEDC conditions, the combined fuel consumption per 100 km is about 5.9L to 6.2L.
Chassis and suspension section, the vehicle adopts front-engine front-wheel-drive (FF) layout, structure is front MacPherson independent suspension, rear H-type torsion beam non-independent suspension. In terms of safety and digital configuration, the mid-to-high trim series on board in the car equipped with 7-inch LCD instrument cluster and 12.3-inch central screen combined into an integrated dual screen, and equipped with Bosch ESP 9.3 Electronic Stability System, Lane Change Assist (LCA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
With the further adjustment of the global automotive consumption structure and the increasingly strict carbon emission regulations, the in-house iteration of the BAIC D50 (U5 PLUS) pure fuel platform has basically slowed down. BAIC Group's future product planning will focus on the "multi-energy export adaptability" and "smart driving compliance retrofit" of this car series. Overseas sales network plans to further optimize the electric powertrain and engine thermal management system in high temperature (such as Middle East) and high altitude (such as South America Andes Mountain regions) environments. At the same time, BAIC is also steadily promoting the pure electric (EV) and natural gas (CNG) versions of this platform to export to more overseas developing countries, to consolidate its share in the international entry-level passenger car market with diversified low operating cost advantages.
