BAIC BJ80

BAIC BJ80 is a self-developed Body-on-frame (non-load-bearing chassis) mid-size luxury rugged off-road SUV by Beijing Off-road. This vehicle combines dual attributes of high-end military state guest security and civilian heavy-duty off-roading, and is the flagship rugged off-road vehicle with the highest positioning in the BAIC product matrix.

Model Overview 

The BAIC BJ80 is positioned as a high-end rugged off-road mid-size SUV. In the history of Chinese off-road vehicle development, this vehicle series possesses unique historical labels—"China Military Designated Senior Commander Vehicle" and "State Guest Parade Vehicle Support Platform". Its core selling points lie in the standard non-load-bearing ladder frame chassis, the power combination of a 3.0T V6 twin-scroll turbocharged engine and 8AT transmission, and the highly recognizable full-feature boxy body shape. This vehicle series primarily targets high-end off-road enthusiasts pursuing military-grade rigid quality and craving large-displacement multi-cylinder off-road performance, as well as specific Chinese and international special defense procurement markets.

Development History 

The birth of the BAIC BJ80 directly inherits the lineage and R&D will of China's first-generation military off-road vehicle, the BJ212. Its prototype concept car was first publicly unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show and formally launched in the civilian market in November 2016, offering early 2.3T gasoline and 2.8T diesel power, due to its geometric silhouette highly similar to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, it sparked extensive technical and design discussions in the industry.

As a representative work of civil-military integration, BJ80 has been mass-delivered to national defense and security forces since 2016 as an official general-purpose and confidential command carrier (marked with "Warrior" or special defense code), and served as the lead inspection vehicle in multiple major parade activities. In 2020, the vehicle underwent a core powertrain restructuring, officially switching to a 3.0T V6 engine and named the BJ80 architecture. In the subsequent evolution, the vehicle series spawned the "Supreme Edition" and "Mount Everest Edition". Entering 2026, Beijing Off-road not only continues to routinely sell high-spec versions of this series in overseas markets (such as the Middle East, North Africa), but also at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, unveiled a new co-creation evolution version model based on the BJ80 platform — "Beijing 81", equipped with more modern exclusive modification accessories of "Tactical Box" and introduced range-extended technology stack, marking the start of a matrix transition from this classic pure fuel hardcore platform to the new energy era.

Market Performance 

The BAIC BJ80 belongs to a typical niche, high-unit-price model in the consumer market. In the Chinese market, due to its recommended price range exceeding 300,000 RMB (298,000 to 398,000 RMB) and the attribute of pure fuel large displacement, its overall sales volume does not pursue scale volume, but rather deeply cultivates the enterprise-government special procurement and specific fuel multi-cylinder hardcore enthusiast circles. However, in high-end overseas export markets, the BAIC BJ80's premium pricing and strategic export capability remain outstanding. As of 2026 terminal feedback, this vehicle's terminal selling price in Middle East countries such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, and UAE reaches up to 20,000 to 26,000 Omani Rial (or approx. 235,000 Qatari Rial). With its military-grade heat resistance calibration and extremely high cost-performance ratio, it has become a pragmatic solution to replace million-level rugged off-road vehicles in Middle East desert off-roading and high-end security fields.

Core Technology 

In terms of body dimensions, the BAIC BJ80 shows a tall, boxy volume feeling, with its length, width, and height being 4765 mm, 1955 mm (part of high-spec width up to 1975 mm), 1985 mm, and wheelbase is 2800 mm. The vehicle's curb weight is 2285 kg, and the maximum gross vehicle mass reaches 2785 kg. Off-road geometry parameters are very strong: Approach angle is 34° to 39°, Departure angle is 27° to 33°, Ramp angle is 25°, Fuel tank capacity reaches 85 L.

In terms of powertrain and transmission architecture:

Core Engine: Equipped with a 3.0-liter (Code 6G30TQY) Straight/V-type 6-cylinder (V6) twin-turbo gasoline engine developed with technical support from SAIC Wuling Liuji. Its maximum output power is tuned to 206 kW (approx. 280 horsepower), overseas certain specific versions can reach up to 292 horsepower, peak torque output is 420 Nm, fully complying with China VI / Euro VI emission standards. 

Transmission: Matched with ZF 8-speed automatic transmission (8AT), using electronic gear shifter.

Transfer case and Differential Lock: Equipped with electronically controlled Part-time 4WD system, providing Snow, Sport, Comfort, Economy four driving modes, in Low-range 4WD (4L) mode torque can be amplified 2.48 times. Rear axle standard equipped with Eaton mechanical automatic differential lock, possessing extremely strong off-road recovery capability.

Chassis part, adopts high-rigidity non-load-bearing ladder frame. Front suspension is double wishbone torsion spring independent suspension (used to balance highway stability and military bulletproof armor load bearing), Rear suspension is five-link solid axle non-independent suspension (equipped with variable stiffness coil spring). In-vehicle tech configuration is equipped with 10.25-inch full LCD instrument cluster, auto-dimming rearview mirror supporting streaming media, and Nappa leather seats (front rows with heating, ventilation, rear row with electric backrest adjustment). Safety level integrates Roll Mitigation System (RMI), Low-speed Hill Descent Control (HDC) and four airbags.

Future Plans 

Following the industry trend of intelligence and energy diversification, the BAIC BJ80 pure fuel platform has gradually entered the stable phase of its lifecycle. Future core planning will mainly focus on the market landing of the "Beijing 81" co-creation platform, comprehensively upgrading the existing 3.0T fuel architecture to 1.5T range-extended dual-motor hybrid technology, to re-enter the "Trendy Off-road" consumer market in the 200,000 to 300,000 RMB interval by significantly reducing energy consumption and adding modern intelligent cockpits. While on the export level, BAIC will continue to maintain the supply of existing 3.0T pure fuel hardcore versions in high-temperature Middle East and African regions, and steadily promote the access of special bulletproof modification versions and Right-Hand Drive versions, thereby consolidating its special market share in international defense and high-end off-road fields.
