Automotive Industry Cluster

2026-10-22 07:00:01

An automotive industry cluster refers to an industrial organisation model where complete vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, sales and aftersales service providers, R&D institutions, and related supporting bodies are highly concentrated within a specific geographical area, fostering close economic ties and collaborative innovation through competition and cooperation. An automotive industry cluster serves as a vital benchmark of regional automotive competitiveness. Renowned global clusters include Detroit in the United States, Stuttgart in Germany, and Toyota City in Japan. In China, industrial clusters have become the core driver propelling the automotive industry from "volume expansion" towards "high-quality development."

Six Major Automotive Industry Clusters in China

Currently, China has established six major automotive industry clusters, each boasting distinct competitive advantages rooted in their unique industrial foundations: the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Central China, Chengdu-Chongqing (Western Triangle), and the Northeast.

The Yangtze River Delta Automotive Industry Cluster is defined by a collaborative synergy of "Shanghai R&D + Jiangsu manufacturing + Zhejiang exports + Anhui supply chain reinforcement," spearheading the nation in the new energy vehicle (NEV) and intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) sectors. In 2024, Anhui's vehicle production reached 2.62 million units, recording significant year-on-year growth.

The Pearl River Delta Automotive Industry Cluster is anchored by Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with a sharp focus on electrification and intelligent mobility. In 2024, Guangdong's total vehicle output reached 5,707,400 units, maintaining the nation's top spot for the eighth consecutive year. Shenzhen's NEV production reached 2,935,300 units, overtaking Guangzhou as China's top car-producing city. With a local sourcing rate exceeding 70% for core components, Guangdong has established a comprehensive supply chain spearheaded by industry giants GAC, BYD, and Huawei.

The Central China Automotive Industry Cluster spans Hubei, Hunan, Henan, and Anhui, registering an NEV growth rate of 48% to rank among the nation's front-runners. Anchored primarily by Dongfeng-affiliated carmakers, Hubei brings together prominent suppliers such as Dongfeng Auto Parts, Valeo, and Faurecia, backed by robust fundamentals in the intelligent connected vehicle supply chain.

The Northeast Automotive Industry Cluster is the historic cradle of China's automotive industry. Centred around Changchun (FAW Group headquarters), Shenyang (BMW Brilliance), and Harbin, it holds a commanding edge in conventional ICE vehicles and commercial vehicles, and is currently accelerating its transition towards NEVs and smart technologies.

The Chengdu-Chongqing (Western Triangle) Automotive Industry Cluster is anchored by Chongqing and Xi'an. In 2024, Chongqing's automotive production reached 2.54 million units, with NEV output hitting 953,200 units—a notable 90.5% surge year-on-year. Meanwhile, Xi'an leverages BYD, Shaanxi Automobile, and Geely to build twin NEV industrial hubs spanning its northern and southern corridors.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Automotive Industry Cluster is centred on Beijing, where the aggressive foray of EV upstarts such as Xiaomi EV is reshaping the capital's automotive landscape.

Characteristics and Advantages of Industry Clusters

The core strengths of an automotive cluster lie in four key pillars: A Comprehensive Supply Chain—driven by leading OEMs, establishing a complete ecosystem from vehicle assembly and parts localisation to aftersales care; Significant Economies of Scale—enterprises drastically boost efficiency and reduce operating costs through resource sharing and proximity sourcing, as seen in the Kunshan Automotive Parts Industrial Base where output value exceeds 150 billion yuan; Formidable Innovation Capabilities—carmakers, universities, and research institutes collaborate closely to accelerate technological breakthroughs, such as GAC rallying over a hundred enterprises to tackle automotive semiconductor development; Dual-Market Expansion—enterprises across the cluster extensively cater to major global vehicle models, exporting finished vehicles and components worldwide.

Taking Guangzhou Baiyun Automotive Avenue as an example, thousands of automotive supply chain enterprises are clustered along a 38.6-kilometre corridor, forming an integrated automotive belt spanning "showcasing, sales, aftersales service, R&D, and tourism," generating over 66.6 billion yuan in recorded sales turnover in 2024.

Development Trends

Numerous regional governments have prioritised the development of intelligent connected NEV clusters as a strategic milestone in their "15th Five-Year Plan" masterplans. Industrial competition is fundamentally shifting from rivalries between standalone carmakers to an all-out ecosystem competition. Moving forward, automotive clusters will place greater emphasis on cross-sector convergence—deeply integrating the automotive sector with frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence, integrated circuits, advanced materials, and the low-altitude economy to forge a new development paradigm of "manufacturing + service + ecosystem."
