Automotive industrial parks, also known as automotive parks, are specialised industrial hubs planned and developed by enterprises or governments to drive the comprehensive growth of the automotive sector, achieve economies of agglomeration, and foster industrial synergy. Anchored by vehicle manufacturing or automotive services, these parks leverage defined geographical zones and policy support to cluster upstream and downstream players, establishing an integrated industrial ecosystem spanning research and development (R&D), production, sales, and aftersales services. Automotive industrial parks serve as key catalysts for industrial upgrading and regional economic growth.
Based on their functional scope, automotive industrial parks are primarily classified into two categories:
Specialised Parks focus on specific segments of the automotive value chain—such as automotive trading hubs, auto parts manufacturing zones, or complete vehicle assembly facilities—featuring a relatively streamlined industrial structure.
Integrated Parks operate as comprehensive industrial clusters covering most, if not all, segments of the automotive value chain, including R&D, technical education, supply chain networks, manufacturing, sales, and intermediary services.
In terms of operational models, automotive industrial park development typically follows three paths: greenfield pioneering, expansionary, and upgrading. The pioneering model establishes an automotive ecosystem from scratch in undeveloped areas; the expansionary model broadens the scope of existing industrial foundations; while the upgrading model enhances and optimizes mature industrial clusters.
The core functions of automotive industrial parks span multiple dimensions. Across manufacturing and R&D, these parks facilitate complete vehicle assembly, component manufacturing, R&D, and technical education, anchoring a supply chain centered around vehicle production. Across distribution and services, they provide comprehensive support including vehicle sales, spare parts trading, warehousing logistics, and aftersales services. In terms of lifestyle and cultural engagement, certain integrated parks also extend into automotive showcases, automotive tourism, and brand lifestyle experiences.
Different parks emphasise distinct aspects based on their strategic positioning. For instance, the Guangzhou Huadu Economic and Technological Development Zone focuses on complete vehicles and auto parts manufacturing, contributing approximately one-third of Guangzhou's total automotive industrial output, with over 15 million vehicles delivered nationwide from this hub. Meanwhile, the Panyu Economic and Technological Development Zone, spearheaded by GAC Trumpchi and GAC Aion, has developed a mega-scale automotive cluster combining complete vehicle production, research institutes, component supply networks, and logistics. Additionally, the Zhaoqing Large-Scale Industrial Agglomeration Area leverages key industry leaders such as XPENG and CATL to expand the intelligent connected vehicle supply chain.
Automotive industrial parks are currently experiencing three major development trends. Electrification and intelligent mobility transformation have taken centre stage, with parks actively attracting intelligent connected vehicle (ICV), new energy vehicle (NEV), and critical component manufacturers. Park models are transitioning from standalone manufacturing bases into integrated industrial townships, where new developments incorporate R&D centres, residential amenities, and commercial facilities to cultivate a balanced "manufacturing–R&D–living" ecosystem. Functional positioning is expanding towards greater diversification, giving rise to integrated automotive corridors spanning exhibition, retail, aftersales, R&D, and auto-tourism; a prime example is the Guangzhou Baiyun Auto Avenue, home to thousands of automotive industry enterprises, which generated over RM66,600,000,000 in statistically recorded sales in 2024. With over 30 major automotive industrial parks established across China, these hubs are rapidly evolving from conventional assembly plants into comprehensive automotive ecosystems.
