Authorised Dealership

2026-10-29 17:30:00

An automotive authorised dealership refers to an independent commercial entity that has secured official brand authorisation from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to specialise in new vehicle sales, genuine spare parts supply, after-sales service and repairs, and customer feedback (commonly operating under the 4S or multi-functional dealer model) for a specific automotive brand. It serves as the primary commercial bridge connecting carmakers with end consumers, forming the backbone of the global automotive distribution and retail network.

Core Business Model and Functional Positioning

The core of an authorised dealership revolves around "standardised brand identity, direct integration with the OEM supply chain, and a complete end-to-end lifecycle service loop":

Standardised Network and Brand Identity Alignment: Authorised dealerships must strictly comply with global or regional corporate identity (CI) standards set by carmakers for showroom design, workshop service bay layouts, personnel training, and customer service. An outlet typically integrates vehicle displays, test-drive arrangements, hire-purchase financing, motor insurance agency, and vehicle registration services.

Genuine Spare Parts and Certified After-sales Support: Dealerships procure official genuine parts directly from the OEM, supported by dedicated diagnostic tools and factory equipment. Service technicians must be factory-certified by the manufacturer to handle complex mechanical, electronic, and high-voltage EV powertrain (battery, motor, and electronic control system) issues strictly in accordance with official workshop service manuals.

Global Market Application and Evolution

Authorised dealership networks are strategically established across prime commercial precincts, dedicated automotive hubs, and major transport corridors worldwide, serving as the primary sales and distribution channel for both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and new energy vehicle (NEV) brands to expand their market footprint.

As automotive retail continues to evolve, the authorised dealership model is transitioning towards "digital showrooms, hybrid agency/direct-sales models, and standalone after-sales service centres". While certain NEV carmakers have explored direct-to-consumer sales, authorised dealerships remain indispensable in high-touch, service-heavy operations such as vehicle handovers, localised after-sales support, trade-in valuations, and major warranty repairs.

Operational Compliance and Industry Restrictions

Authorised dealerships are strictly prohibited from retrofitting or passing off non-genuine, substandard parts as original OEM accessories, or forcefully bundling marked-up motor insurance packages, hidden financial processing fees, and unsubstantiated labour charges on top of the vehicle's standard selling price.

Dealerships are likewise required to strictly observe OEM benchmarks regarding inventory holding, working capital liquidity, and Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) scores. Amid fierce market competition and aggressive price wars, dealerships must maintain healthy cash flow to eliminate the risk of insolvency, outlet closures, vehicle delivery delays, or failing to honour after-sales warranty and service commitments.
