The Audi SQ5 is a high-performance derivative built by Audi Sport GmbH based on the Q5 mid-size SUV, standing as the most compact SUV offering in the Audi S model line-up. First introduced in 2013, the original SQ5 was powered by a 3.0T V6 supercharged engine. Having evolved over two generations, the nameplate boasts a heritage spanning more than a decade. Currently on sale in the Chinese domestic market are the 2024/2025 SQ5 models, fully imported (CBU) and distributed by Audi (Import).

Positioned as a mid-size high-performance luxury SUV, the SQ5 serves as the flagship performance variant of the Audi Q5 range. Its chief appeal lies in blending the robust output of a 3.0T V6 powertrain, the exceptional grip of the quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, and everyday SUV practicality into a single package. The vehicle features a 5-door, 5-seater SUV body layout. The manufacturer's recommended retail price (MRRP) for the 2024 SQ5 3.0 TFSI quattro is RM598,800, while the SQ5 Sportback coupe-SUV variant is priced at RM638,800. Both are brought in as fully imported (CBU) units. Its primary rival is the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC (priced at RM666,700).
In terms of dimensions, the SQ5 measures 4689×1893×1633mm (L×W×H) with a wheelbase of 2825mm. It has a kerb weight of 2020kg, a 70L fuel tank, and a boot capacity ranging from 520 to 1520L.
The exterior styling of the SQ5 builds on the standard Q5 by incorporating extensive S-exclusive performance elements. The front end is dominated by an octagonal Singleframe radiator grille with a honeycomb mesh insert and a distinctive red SQ5 badge. Large air ducts flank the front bumper. Along the sides, it features the S family's signature satin silver wing mirror caps, standard 20-inch alloy wheels (with 21-inch wheels available as an option), and red-painted brake calipers. The rear is updated with OLED tail lamps with proximity sensing—automatically lighting up when a pedestrian or vehicle approaches within two metres from behind. The rear apron integrates a revised diffuser and a quad-tailpipe exhaust system. The S sport suspension lowers the ride height by 30mm, giving it an athletic, grounded stance.
Inside, the cabin retains the Q5 family's tech-laden architecture while infusing dedicated S styling cues. Nappa leather sport seats are standard across the range, complete with S embossing and diamond quilting. The cockpit features a 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus fully digital instrument cluster alongside a 10.1-inch MMI touch infotainment display, with higher-spec variants offering an optional 12.3-inch central touchscreen. The flat-bottom sport steering wheel is fitted with paddle shifters, while multi-colour ambient lighting comes as standard. Illuminated door sill scuff plates with S badging automatically light up upon opening the doors.
The Audi SQ5 is powered by the EA839 3.0T V6 twin-turbocharged petrol engine, co-developed by Audi and Porsche. With a displacement of 2995cc, it employs a 90-degree V-angle configuration with the turbochargers nestled inside the 'hot vee', ensuring a compact layout and shorter gas flow paths. The V6 unit weighs just 172kg and features an aluminium alloy crankcase.
The engine generates a maximum output of 260kW (354 PS) and 500Nm of peak torque, delivered across a wide rev band from 1370 to 4500 rpm. It is paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system (MHEV plus), which contributes an additional 60Nm of torque during initial acceleration to mitigate turbo lag. Power is channelled through an 8-speed Tiptronic torque-converter automatic transmission. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 5.1 seconds for both the SQ5 and the SQ5 Sportback. Top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h. The WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at approximately 9.45L/100km, running on RON 95 minimum.
The Audi SQ5 is built on Audi’s MLB Evo platform, featuring a five-link independent suspension setup at both the front and rear. From the 2023 model year, adaptive air suspension has been made standard across the range, offering variable damping and ride height adjustment. The S sport suspension lowers the ride height by 30mm. Power is distributed via the permanent quattro all-wheel-drive system utilising a mechanical self-locking central differential. Torque is split 40:60 front-to-rear by default for a rear-biased driving dynamic, with the capability to direct up to 70% to the front axle or up to 85% to the rear under demanding conditions. An optional rear-axle sport differential (priced at RM19,900) provides active torque vectoring between the rear wheels. Stopping power is managed by six-piston aluminium front brake calipers clamping onto 375mm ventilated discs. It rides on 255/45 R20 tyres, with dynamic steering with variable ratio available as a cost option (RM14,700).
In terms of infotainment and connectivity, the SQ5 features the MIB3 infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. A 15W cooled wireless smartphone charging pad is also on board. Audiophile duties are handled by a standard Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System, delivering 705W through 19 speakers and a 16-channel amplifier.
For comfort, the front seats come standard with seat heating, while a massage function is optionally available (RM3,300). Seat ventilation is currently not offered. A head-up display (HUD) can be specified as an option for RM14,400. The cabin also features Vehicle Noise Compensation (VNC) active noise cancellation. Regarding rear cabin space, the SQ5 has a shorter wheelbase compared to the China-exclusive long-wheelbase Q5L (2907mm), making rear legroom comparatively snug.
The SQ5 is equipped with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Key active safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (with Traffic Jam Assist), Lane Departure Warning, Audi Side Assist (blind spot monitoring), Audi Pre Sense Rear, Rear Cross-Traffic Assist, Night Vision Assistant, Park Assist Plus, and automated park assist.
On the passive safety front, the vehicle is fitted with front dual airbags, front and rear side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags , and knee airbags. Standard electronic chassis aids include a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) . Factory warranty coverage is 3 years or 100,000km.
The Audi SQ5 is sold in the Chinese market as a fully imported (CBU) model. The 2024 model carries an MRRP of RM598,800, representing a price reduction over the outgoing model's RM632,800 sticker price. Market discounts are available at the showroom level, with transacted prices in selected regions dropping to around RM509,000. The SQ5 Sportback variant retails at RM638,800.
Motoring media reviews praise the SQ5 for the linear delivery and rich power reserves of its 3.0T V6, the all-weather reassurance of the mechanical quattro AWD system, and the pliant ride-and-handling balance provided by the adaptive air suspension. The EA839 engine serves up peak torque from as low as 1370 rpm, delivering punchy low-end responsiveness. On the flip side, rear legroom is tighter than in the locally assembled long-wheelbase Q5L, and desirable performance and tech options—such as the rear sport differential and HUD—remain cost-added extras.
As the most compact SUV bearer of the S badge, the Audi SQ5 continues to attract enthusiasts in the mid-size performance SUV segment, thanks to its muscular V6 powertrain, the mechanical pedigree of its quattro AWD system, and the refined ride quality of its air suspension.
