Aston Martin DBX

2026-10-07 07:50:00

Model Overview

The Aston Martin DBX is the first-ever SUV from British ultra-luxury marque Aston Martin, making its global debut concurrently at the British Ambassador's Residence in Beijing, China, and across global markets on 20 November 2019. Serving as the brand's maiden SUV in its 106-year history, the introduction of the DBX marked Aston Martin's official foray into the ultra-luxury SUV segment. Underpinned by a bespoke all-new aluminium platform and billed as a "Super SUV", the DBX is engineered to combine supercar-level performance with SUV practicality and cabin space. At the 2019 Guangzhou Auto Show, the DBX was officially launched with an initial recommended retail price of RM2,378,000.

In February 2022, Aston Martin unveiled its high-performance derivative—the DBX707, named after its 707 PS power output, making it the world's most powerful production ultra-luxury SUV at the time. In April 2025, the marque introduced the all-new flagship DBX S; on 6 March 2026, the DBX S was officially launched in China with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of RM2,688,000. As of June 2026, the standard DBX has ceased production, the DBX707 is brought in on a build-to-order basis, and the DBX S stands as the model line's flagship offering.

Design Language

Exterior-wise, the DBX faithfully retains Aston Martin's iconic design DNA. The front end is dominated by the brand's signature large "DB" grille, a styling cue that dates back to the 1949 DB2 prototype and is further amplified on the DBX. Twin bonnet louvres are sculpted into the clamshell bonnet, complemented by prominent air ducts integrated into both flanks of the front bumper. In profile, the five-door fastback silhouette features frameless "swan-wing" doors and flush pop-out door handles, balancing elegance with a high-tech aesthetic. Round the back, the styling draws inspiration from the Vantage, showcasing an integrated ducktail spoiler and signature full-width LED taillights.

The DBX707 gains bespoke upgrades over the standard model, including an enlarged front grille, revised LED daytime running lights (DRLs), an extended roof spoiler, a beefier rear diffuser, and quad exhaust tailpipes. The DBX S turns up the aggression further with a front splitter inspired by the DBS 770 Ultimate, wrap-around DRLs, and vertically stacked quad exhaust tips at the rear. Dimension-wise, the DBX measures 5,039 mm long, 1,998 mm wide, and 1,680 mm tall, with a 3,060 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the DBX embodies a high-end sporting luxury theme. The 2025 model year did away with the previous push-button gear selector. The DBX S comes trimmed in Alcantara across the seats, headliner, and dashboard as standard, adorned with embossed winged emblems and "S" insignias on the headrests and scuff plates. A tactile array of physical buttons and rotary dials is retained across the cabin.

Powertrain and Performance

The entire DBX range is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that has received progressive tuning enhancements over the years. The launch edition develops 550 PS (404 kW) and 700 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 291 km/h. The DBX707 pushes outputs to 707 PS (520 kW) and 900 Nm, paired with a 9-speed wet-clutch automatic transmission to slash the 0-100 km/h time to 3.3 seconds. The DBX S adopts turbocharging technology derived from the Valhalla supercar, boosting power to 727 PS (535 kW) alongside 900 Nm of torque. It despatches 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, trims 0.3 seconds off its predecessor's 0-200 km/h sprint, and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h. Its WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 14.2 L/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The DBX is constructed on a bespoke, lightweight bonded aluminium platform. Underneath, it rides on a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independent suspension setup. An all-wheel-drive (AWD) system delivers power to all four corners. Height-adjustable adaptive triple-chamber air suspension and electronic dampers are standard across the range. The DBX S benefits from extensive weight-saving measures: a near-three-square-metre carbon-fibre roof sheds 18 kg, while optional magnesium alloy wheels are 75% lighter than steel wheels. The steering ratio is sharpened by 4%, reducing the turning circle to 12 metres. An electronic active anti-roll control system (eARC) limits body roll to within 1.5 degrees under hard cornering. Braking duties on the DBX707 and DBX S are handled by standard carbon ceramic brakes (420 mm front, 390 mm rear).

Cabin and Equipment

The DBX features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central touchscreen display. Infotainment is handled by Aston Martin's in-house bespoke system, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The DBX S comes equipped with a 14-speaker (800W) sound system as standard, with an optional 23-speaker (1,600W) flagship setup developed in collaboration with Bowers & Wilkins. The cabin offers a five-seat layout, paired with a 638-litre boot capacity.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the DBX range comes fully equipped with front airbags for the driver and passenger, front side airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, and knee airbags. Active safety systems include Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward and Rear Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). Driver assistance features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), a 360-degree surround-view camera (with blind-spot display), and Auto Park Assist.

Market Performance and Reception

The DBX long served as Aston Martin's primary sales driver, at one point contributing more than half of the brand's total volume. However, deliveries saw a sharp drop from 2024 onwards—in 2024, DBX sales in China stood at just 161 units, representing a 67% year-on-year plunge; by Q3 2025, only 29 units were delivered in the Chinese market. In May 2025, the brand recorded just 18 total vehicle sales in the country for the entire month, with the DBX accounting for 15 units. Key rivals to the DBX include the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, and Ferrari Purosangue. Industry analysts note that the DBX faces headwinds in the Chinese market due to high fuel consumption and comparatively dated in-car smart tech. Even so, the DBX S has garnered critical acclaim internationally, clinching the title of "Super SUV of the Year 2026" from Top Gear. Overall, as Aston Martin's maiden SUV, the DBX established a distinct niche in the ultra-luxury performance SUV segment with sports-car-like dynamics and bespoke craftsmanship, though its commercial performance continues to face stiff market headwinds.
