Brand Overview

ATOM is a new energy vehicle brand under the Russian automotive company Kama, focusing on the R&D and manufacturing of pure electric vehicles. The brand name "Atom" originates from the "atom" of physics, signifying the reconstruction of mobility with brand-new, most basic technical units. It aims to create "not just electric vehicles, but complete intelligent mobile devices equipped with their own operating systems", reshaping cars from traditional transportation tools into intelligent terminals seamlessly integrated into digital life.

Its operating entity AO KAMA (Joint Stock Company KAMA) is headquartered in Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatarstan Republic, Russia, with branches in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Togliatti, and established R&D centers in Nanjing and Shanghai, China. The ATOM project was officially launched in 2021. On the path of independent R&D from scratch, it concentrated the strength of various sectors of the Russian automotive industry — technical level obtained technical support from Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) in the fields of batteries and motors; received joint investment from Russia's Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Promsvyazbank (PSB), and VEB.RF (State Development Corporation); relied on Moscow Automobile Plant (formerly Renault Moscow Plant) for mass production.

ATOM is not only the first mass-produced pure electric vehicle independently developed in Russia, but also a "national business card" level project promoting the electrification transformation of the country's local automotive industry. As of now, the ATOM project has gathered over 1,000 engineering, design, and IT developers, with a development cycle exceeding four years, making it one of the passenger car projects with the most concentrated resource investment in Russia in recent years.

Development History

ATOM's R&D history began in the summer of 2021. At the outset, ATOM established the technical route of "forward R&D of the pure electric platform from scratch", rather than reverse engineering or oil-to-electric conversion. From 2022 to 2023, the project entered a rapid promotion phase — the technical argumentation of the basic platform was completed at the end of 2022, and the all-function prototype car was exhibited in Moscow for the first time in May 2023, officially unveiling the project to the public. In the third quarter of the same year, the functional prototype car completed its first test. Within less than two months after opening reservations in July 2023, market response far exceeded expectations, with cumulative reservation orders exceeding 36,000.

2024 was a key year for ATOM moving from prototype to mass production. In April, ATOM's Chinese brand name "Atomu Automotive" was officially revealed, with its China regional R&D center located in Nanjing and Shanghai. In July, the Russia Direct Investment Fund announced an investment of 2 billion rubles to support the ATOM project, and at the same time announced it would collaborate with Chinese multinational enterprise XuanYuan Group to explore the feasibility of establishing a production base in Harbin. At the end of 2024, the first pre-production mass production prototype vehicle was officially rolled off the line.

2025 is the decisive year for ATOM to complete vehicle certification and testing sprint. In April, ATOM began public road tests on the streets of Moscow. In May, the first round of collision tests were completed successfully. In September, ATOM officially obtained the Russia Federal Vehicle Type Approval (VTA), marking that it has the compliance basis for legal driving on the road and mass sales in Russia. In November, the first certified mass production model rolled off the line. At the end of the same year, Kama Company fully prepared for mass production. From the end of 2025 to March 2026, the Russian government issued the first batch of special funds totaling 14 billion rubles through PSB and VEB, and signed a syndicated loan agreement totaling 24 billion rubles, providing sufficient cash flow guarantee for the mass production stage.

In 2026, ATOM welcomed the final sprint of commercialization. At the end of January, ATOM announced that it would officially start production and sales at the Moscow Automobile Plant in spring 2026. In April, its equipped ADAS driving assistance system obtained the double certification of "Made in Russia" quality and reliability, clearing qualification obstacles for system export. According to the latest plan, ATOM's official retail price is set at 3,980,000 rubles. After including the national subsidy of 925,000 rubles, the terminal price is about 3,055,000 rubles (approximately 260,000 RMB), and it will be officially launched and sold in Russia before May 31, 2026.

Market Performance

ATOM has accumulated a huge order base even before mass production. As of the end of 2024, ATOM has accumulated over 105,000 reservation orders, most of which come from individual consumer payments.

Entering 2026, ATOM's mass production plan entered the sprint stage. As of the end of January, its cumulative reservation orders have stabilized at over 100,000. However, in the environment where Russia's charging infrastructure is not yet saturated, ATOM's first batch of mass-produced vehicles will prioritize the needs of fleet customers — including shared mobility platforms, taxi companies, and local government official pilot projects. Personal consumer deliveries will continue to follow up. Industry research institutions predict that ATOM's total delivery volume in 2026 will be between 2,000 and 6,000 units.

At the capital level, ATOM obtained strong financial support from the national level. In June 2024, RDIF announced an investment injection of 2 billion rubles into the project. After entering the mass production preparation period, the Russian Federation directly started the production line with the first batch of special funds of 14 billion rubles, and signed a syndicated loan agreement of 24 billion rubles with PSB and VEB to support ATOM's mass production at the Moscow Automobile Plant. The parent company Kama Company expects that by 2030, ATOM's single brand sales will reach 200 billion rubles.

Core Technology

ATOM's technology system shows obvious "semiconductorization" and "system-native" characteristics — with self-developed chips and self-developed operating systems as dual engines, combined with Rosatom high-density batteries and full-stack ADAS driving assistance systems to build a complete self-developed technology closed loop.

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor: ATOM rear axle is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor jointly developed with Rosatom. Standard version power can reach 150kW (about 204 horsepower), peak torque is undisclosed. This motor uses an energy recovery system, where the braking process feeds kinetic energy back to the battery system, improving range efficiency.

High-density Battery System: ATOM standard equipped with 77kWh lithium-ion battery, jointly developed by Ranera Company under Rosatom and localized production in Kaliningrad. WLTC comprehensive range about 500 km, supports 1000 charge-discharge cycles. Integrated active temperature management system can actively heat in below-zero environments to maintain optimal working status. DC fast charging 120kW efficiency 8 minutes can supplement 100 km range, 20% to 80% charge replenishment requires 30 minutes. Winter charging time extended by about 30%.

ADAS 2.0+ Driving Assistance System: ATOM equipped with L2 level driving assistance system (planned to upgrade to L3 level in 2027), integrating 17 to 18 active safety functions — adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and autonomous parking assist systems, etc. The system has obtained the "Made in Russia" quality and reliability double certification from Russia Export Center. It is planned for export to Asian, Middle Eastern and Eurasian Economic Union countries.

"Atom OS" Car Infotainment System: ATOM equipped with self-developed operating system Atom OS. Realizes vehicle control, remote monitoring and firmware OTA remote upgrade through smartphone App. Integrated voice assistant — based on neural network natural language processing engine, supports controlling air conditioning, multimedia and seat heating functions through voice commands.

High-strength Body and Passive Safety: ATOM adopts hot-stamped high-strength steel frame structure, equipped with 6 airbags (front + side + curtain). The dual solution of gull-wing doors and no B-column design makes ATOM present an MPV-like transparent experience. At the same time, the seat-integrated seatbelt system guarantees the reliability of occupant protection in a collision.

Overseas Layout

ATOM's globalization layout revolves around the triple dimensions of "technology input - capital import - capacity construction", forming an expansion blueprint with China as the Asian strategic hub, covering Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets.

China Market: R&D Cooperation, Supply Chain and Potential Localization. In April 2024, the China regional R&D center officially landed in Nanjing and Shanghai. At the June 2024 Huzhou Wuxing project signing ceremony, ATOM announced it will rely on the Yangtze River Delta industrial cluster advantage to introduce core component suppliers and establish a component production base in China. In July 2024, RDIF and XuanYuan Group reached an agreement. Both sides will find industrial land in Harbin to promote ATOM's local production in China. In the future, ATOM plans to launch localized vehicles into the Chinese market.

Iran, Indonesia, Uzbekistan: Whole Vehicle Export Targets. ATOM clearly plans to export whole vehicles and Atom OS operating system to Iran and Indonesia markets. The Iran market, as a potential region for electric vehicles in the Middle East, has strong demand for reasonably priced compact electric vehicles. Indonesia, as a representative of the Southeast Asian emerging electric vehicle market and right-hand drive country, carries the function of ATOM testing operating models in Southeast Asia.

Engine and System Technology Export. The ADAS driving assistance system developed by ATOM has obtained REC certification. It is planned to export its software and driving assistance system to Asian, Middle Eastern and Eurasian Economic Union member states. This "system first" model strengthens ATOM brand's light asset overseas strategy.

Future Outlook

ATOM regards the Russian local market as the basic base, while planning the long-term evolution direction in multiple dimensions such as system platform, energy route and commercial application.

ADAS Level 3 Leap. The current Level 2 ADAS has obtained REC certification. It is planned to upgrade to Level 3 conditional autonomous driving in 2027. The driver only needs to intervene and take over in emergency situations. The long-term roadmap defines ATOM as a completely unmanned "autonomous driving robot". The self-developed ADAS platform and sensor fusion solutions accumulated in the system can also be licensed to other domestic and foreign host manufacturers in the future through white-box mode.

Extended Range Hybrid and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Multi-route Joint Promotion. Besides the all-electric platform, ATOM has confirmed it is discussing hybrid versions and derivative schemes with hydrogen fuel cells as the energy source. In the market background of Russia's vast winter and remote areas where charging facilities are still not perfect, extended range and hydrogen fuel cell schemes have practical value.

Product Spectrum and Mass Production Ramp-up. Besides the basic passenger car, ATOM's production version has planned to include single car and two-seater cargo vehicle configurations. In the future, based on Atom pure electric platform, more models with different sizes and purposes can be derived, covering taxi fleets, shared mobility, logistics delivery and other B-end uses. Parent company Kama has set the mid-term goal of achieving 200 billion rubles (approximately 16 billion RMB) ATOM product portfolio sales by 2030.

Commercial Channel Innovation and Vehicle Usage Guarantee. ATOM's sales to private consumers adopt a pure online booking + door-to-door delivery D2C model — test drives and after-sales services are provided by partners. By 2026, authorized service centers have been established in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny and another 8 to 10 cities. Whole vehicle warranty 8 years or 200,000 km. Official maintenance interval is 20,000 km to replace air conditioner filter, 40,000 km to replace transmission oil. If the predetermined production target of 2026 is achieved, ATOM will become the second local mass-produced passenger car model to achieve large-scale mass production delivery after Lada in Russia. Its core significance far exceeds that of a single model — it is a microcosm of the Russian automotive industry trying to complete the "from zero to one" breakthrough in the wave of electrification, and also an important touchstone for testing whether Russia can rebuild local supply chains and master self-developed system capabilities in the context of globalization.
