5G Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (5G C-V2X)

2026-10-24 12:40:00

5G Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (5G C-V2X) refers to an advanced intelligent transport and communication network system powered by fifth-generation mobile technology (5G). It facilitates high-speed, low-latency, and ultra-reliable connectivity between vehicles and their surrounding environment (including other vehicles, roadside infrastructure, pedestrians, and cloud servers). Serving as a core pillar for intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), 5G C-V2X leverages three key capabilities—high bandwidth, massive connectivity, and Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC)—to overcome the physical limitations of standalone onboard sensors and computing power, providing vital support for high-level autonomous driving assistance and smart traffic management.

Core Technical Architecture and Operating Principles

The technical architecture of 5G C-V2X primarily operates across two communication modes: cellular network communication (Uu interface) and direct vehicle-to-vehicle communication (PC5 direct communication interface).

Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication & PC5 Direct Communication (URLLC & PC5 Direct Communication):

Operating via 5G cellular networks or dedicated PC5 direct sidelink frequencies without requiring base station routing, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside unit (RSU) communications can achieve millisecond-level end-to-end latency (typically under 10 ms). This enables vehicles to broadcast crucial dynamic telematics—such as precise positioning, speed, heading, and driving intent—directly to surrounding road users, even in cellular blind spots or during critical emergencies.

High-Bandwidth Edge Computing & Cloud Synergy (High-Bandwidth Edge Computing & Cloud Synergy):

Leveraging the vast bandwidth of 5G networks, vehicles can stream multiple ultra-high-definition video feeds, LiDAR point cloud data, and high-definition (HD) map updates in real time. Paired with Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) servers deployed at the network edge, the system rapidly processes massive environmental perception datasets to deliver vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) traffic light optimisation, beyond-line-of-sight hazard alerts, and cloud-assisted driving decision support.

Safety Specifications and Physical Limitations

Absolute Communication Security and Anti-Tampering Compliance (Communication Security & Anti-Tampering Compliance):

Given its direct impact on motoring safety and public traffic order, 5G C-V2X onboard communication modules must strictly comply with national and automotive industry cybersecurity encryption standards (such as the V2X PKI certificate management system). Unauthorised modification or cracking of telematics terminal firmware, as well as the use of uncertified non-standard communication modules, is strictly prohibited to prevent malicious intrusion into the vehicle's onboard network bus (CAN/Ethernet) and subsequent hijacking of critical vehicle control systems.

Hardware Installation and Electromagnetic Compatibility (Hardware Installation & Electromagnetic Compatibility):

5G telematics control units (T-Box) and multi-mode antenna arrays (integrating GNSS, 5G, Wi-Fi, etc.) are typically mounted on the vehicle roof or windscreen area. During retrofitting or servicing, antennas must never be installed within sealed metallic enclosures that obstruct signal reception, nor should they block airbag deployment paths. Installations must strictly adhere to vehicle electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards to maintain stable high-frequency RF transmission, mitigating the risk of telematics dropouts or delayed active safety alerts caused by poor antenna connections or electromagnetic interference.
