Hong Kong August new car registrations: BYD leads as Tesla and BMW round out top three

Hong Kong's August new car registration figures are out, with BYD Sealion 7 topping the monthly model rankings for the second consecutive month.

According to Transport Department data, 252 units of the Sealion 7 were registered in August. The BYD Atto 3 came second with 162 units, while the iCAUR V23 took third with 154 units — the two models swapped positions from July.

There was also a new name in the top 10. BMW's new electric iX3 ranked 10th with 65 registrations after arriving in Hong Kong in August.

At brand level, BYD remained No. 1 for the third month in a row, recording 633 registrations. Tesla was second with 213 units, while BMW moved up to third with 170 registrations, helped by the arrival of its latest EVs.

BYD continues to dominate the Hong Kong registration charts, with the Sealion 7 once again leading the way.

The Atto 3 and new Atto 2 also made the top five. Combined with the Sealion 7, the three BYD models accounted for 540 registrations, or around 65.1% of the top five models.

That is worth noting because BYD's strength in Hong Kong is no longer coming from just one high-volume model. Several models are now contributing meaningful registration numbers at the same time.

Tesla returned to second place among brands, with the six-seat Model Y L doing much of the work.

The model recorded 135 registrations in August, accounting for around 63% of Tesla's total for the month. Its three-row, six-seat layout gives it an obvious advantage for buyers who need more space.

Tesla also introduced a cheaper, simplified Model 3 in Hong Kong at the end of August. Priced at HK$321,300, the new version has less equipment but a lower entry price.

With sedans no longer dominating the market, it will be interesting to see whether the lower-priced Model 3 can gain traction over the coming months.

BMW was another brand worth watching in August, rising to third place after a strong run from its electric models.

The iX1, which went on sale in May, recorded 58 registrations in August and ranked 13th among individual models. The newly launched iX3 added another 65 units, enough to put it 10th overall.

Together, the two EVs accounted for around 72% of BMW's August registrations, showing how much of the brand's recent growth has come from its electric line-up.

Hong Kong recorded around 2,404 first registrations of private cars in August, down 5.2% from 2,536 units in July.

The market has now remained at one of its lowest levels of the year for three consecutive months following the end of the One-for-One Replacement Scheme.

The August figures also show that the market remains concentrated around a relatively small group of strong brands and popular new models. Month-to-month positions can still move around depending on shipment and delivery schedules, but the broader picture is becoming clearer.

With overall demand still limited, buyers are increasingly gravitating towards some established brands and newer models, particularly Chinese EVs.
