Global murals offer first look at smart #2 design

smart has teased its upcoming #2 electric city car through a series of murals in cities around the world, revealing the model's overall exterior design ahead of its debut. The new #2 will replace the fortwo in smart's line-up.

Although smart has kept the rear design mostly under wraps, official sketches reveal round tail lights, a sculpted rear spoiler and a conventional hatchback tailgate. The rear also gets a centrally positioned number plate, and the black bumper drops the previous digital display in favour of reflectors for a cleaner, simpler design.

According to earlier reports, the smart #2 will be built on a dedicated small EV platform and equipped with a 35.7 kWh battery pack, offering a CLTC-rated range of around 300 km. It is also expected to support DC fast charging. A 10-80% charge takes less than 20 minutes.

The smart #2 measures 2,792 mm in length and has a turning radius of just 6.95 metres. Compared with the second-generation fortwo, the new model is 97 mm longer, bringing extra practicality while keeping the compact footprint and agility needed for Hong Kong’s tight city streets.

The global mural project was developed by Mercedes' design team together with local artists in various markets, including Hong Kong. smart also highlighted the origin of its name — a combination of Swatch, Mercedes and Art — as design has always been at the heart of the brand.
