BYD's Fangchengbao Bao 8 & Bao 5 Flash Charge Editions Launch May 13 – Redefining Premium Hybrid Off-Road SUVs

SHENZHEN, May 11 – Fangchengbao, BYD's personalised brand, has officially announced that the Flash Charge editions of its Bao 8 and Bao 5 off-road SUVs will launch on May 13. Positioned as "ultra-fast charging hybrid premium off-road SUVs", both models debut BYD's latest high-end suspension technology and will be accompanied by the unveiling of the next-generation Yunian-P intelligent hydraulic suspension system at the launch event.

Drivetrain: 550 kW Combined Power, 150 km Pure-Electric Range

Both Flash Charge models are built on the DMO Super Hybrid off-road platform. The 2.0T plug-in hybrid system features a 200 kW engine, a 200 kW front motor and a 300 kW rear motor, delivering combined output of 550 kW (approximately 748 hp) and 760 N·m of torque. Zero to 100 km/h acceleration takes just 4.8 seconds, with both models retaining their front, centre and rear differential locks.

The key upgrade is the adoption of BYD's 46.7 kWh second-generation Blade Battery. WLTC all-electric range for the Bao 8 Flash Charge rises to 150 km, while the Bao 5 Flash Charge achieves up to 210 km (CLTC). Combined range exceeds 1,200 km on the Bao 8 and reaches 1,310 km on the Bao 5.

The most significant innovation is bringing "flash charging" to a plug-in hybrid off-road SUV. Using BYD's 1500 kW flash-charging network, owners can recharge the LFP battery pack from low to 80% in roughly 10–15 minutes. With BYD planning to deploy 20,000 flash-charging stations nationwide by the end of 2026, long-distance overland trips will see dramatically less downtime.

Next-Generation Yunian-P Ultra Suspension

The centrepiece of the launch is the new-generation Yunian-P Ultra intelligent hydraulic suspension system. It is expected to deliver increased suspension travel, enhanced traction for extreme off-road scenarios such as single-wheel lift articulation and dampers that continuously adapt to terrain. The system also integrates intelligent energy management to optimise power distribution in off-road situations. As the first production vehicles to debut BYD's latest high-end suspension, both the Bao 8 and Bao 5 Flash Charge editions combine Yunian-P Ultra with triple differential locks for full off-road capability.

Design and Autonomous Driving

Exterior updates on the Bao 5 include redesigned front and rear bumpers, new wheel designs and a two-tone roof option. The Bao 8 retains its existing dimensions while receiving detail refinements.

In terms of ADAS, it will be possible to specify either the "Tiangshen Eye B" system or the full Huawei ADS 4 system, which can be equipped with a steering-wheel paddle and driver-monitoring camera.

Market Positioning

The current-generation Bao 5 is priced between 239,800 and 329,800 RMB, while the Bao 8 ranges from 379,800 to 423,800 RMB. With substantial upgrades including the second-generation Blade Battery, next-generation Yunian-P Ultra suspension and flash-charging capability, the Flash Charge editions are expected to carry moderate price premiums. The Bao 5 Flash Charge is likely to land in the 250,000–280,000 RMB bracket, while the Bao 8 Flash Charge could exceed 400,000 RMB, potentially approaching 420,000–450,000 RMB.

The "boxy off-road SUV" segment continues to expand rapidly, with sales up approximately 68% year-on-year in early 2026. Fangchengbao recorded 25,926 deliveries in March, up 222% year-on-year, demonstrating accelerating customer acceptance of electrified off-road products.

Outlook for the Hong Kong Market

If the Bao 8 and Bao 5 Flash Charge editions are officially imported to Hong Kong and qualify for the "One-for-One Replacement" EV First Registration Tax scheme, their expected pricing of HK270,000300,000(Bao5)andHK270,000–300,000(Bao5)andHK450,000–480,000 (Bao 8) would place them directly against the Toyota Prado HEV and Land Rover Defender PHEV. However, Fangchengbao Hong Kong has not yet announced any import timeline, homologation progress or distributor plans for the local market. The official launch of the Flash Charge editions takes place on May 13 at 19:00 Beijing time.
