Ministry of Transport Rolls Out Targeted EV Charging Measures for Labour Day Holiday

As the Labour Day holiday approaches, Hong Kong drivers planning mainland road trips remain anxious about EV charging. The Ministry of Transport recently issued a notice introducing “one zone, one policy” tailored measures to address the challenge, with EV traffic expected to reach about 15.4 million vehicles daily—33% higher than last year.

Key measures include: pre-identifying and updating busy service areas; adding parking spaces and high‑power chargers; deploying mobile charging units (13 emergency vehicles on major expressways); directing vehicles to opposite service areas or nearby off‑ramp chargers; and issuing real‑time information via navigation apps.

For Hong Kong drivers, shorter queues and better contingency options reduce charging anxiety. The policy shifts from infrastructure expansion to smarter operational management, promising a smoother experience this holiday—though real-world results remain to be seen.
